I don't sleep very well.....never wake up feeling rested either.
But, that's been going on for many years. And I was checked for apnea. Nothing very amiss detected, other than some random, short breathing stoppages and tendency to snore......

As you might suspect, the 9 computers I run 24/7 for Seti make quite a din, with countless cooling fans whirring away to keep things cool. The crunching den is in the living room, just adjacent to the bedroom where I sleep with the kitties.

Long ago got used to the noise, and it is actually rather normal and comforting after all these years. So, it does not interfere with my sleep at all.

I can tell you that when the power goes out and everything goes dead silent, now THAT is unnerving.

Meow.

I had a dream last night Donald Trump and the Harlem Globetrotters came over and we were eating a birthday cake made with poi(something Hawaiians supposedly eat).

I need some form of music playing to get to sleep. Otherwise my brain concentrates on all the little aches and pains my body has. I get the music online from my laptop in my bedroom. The site is called calmradio and they have everything from classical to rock-n-roll. There is one category called reiki which consists of Japanese meditation music and it really helps my brain simmer down. I also listen to solo piano pieces. My laptop is connected wirelessly to my internet and sometimes it looses the connection and I wake up immediately when the music stops or my bladder lets me know it's time for a trip to the toilet. The only time I have gotten more than 4 hours continuous sleep is after a surgery and I am on a foley catheter. There was an episode of "House" where the doc went home after many hours awake and put himself on a foley before going to bed. I understood perfectly why he did it but most others missed the significance.

Sometimes I leave the tv on, but with the sound on mute. There's a certain low hum to it that is weirdly soothing.

I have (well... had) sleep issues... I would wake up at or after the "witching hour" of 3:30 in the morning and then couldn't get back to sleep again. There's a reason for this (other than your house in Amityville being possessed by a demon... heh) : it's apparently when our circadian rhythm changes days.

I had read that valerian was an effective sleep-aid so I tried it with great success. It's been used for thousands of years and is sometimes called "natural valium" and prescribed in place of it or other tranquilizers. Many sleepytime teas have a little, but these tiny amounts didn't interest me. Instead I buy bags of pure valerian root at health food stores.

Caveats: These are very tough little lumps (I powder them in a coffee grinder) and they have an odor, only made stronger when powdered, variously described as moldy, musty, fecal, or even gym socks. So I brew a pot of this tea (sold at the very same store the valerian is found) which masks the odor, adding a rounded teaspoon of ground valerian root. As a bonus, this tea also contains the well-known sleep-aid camomile: insomnia hasn't a chance. And of course: please consult a doctor if you're on any medication before using valerian (or anything else); for example it's apparently not a good idea to use it if you're taking St. John's Wort.

Most nights with it I sleep like a rock until I'm supposed to wake up, even if I napped first, and feel refreshed. If I do happen to wake up in the middle of the night, I can just go right back to sleep again which I couldn't do otherwise. Hope this helps someone escape the insomnia misery. :^)

Oh melatonin, why did you fail me? Oh Benadryl, why aren't you working yet?

If you're taking the 15mg capsules of Benadryl, you need to actually take two of those to equal the original Prescription strength. (I used to take Benadryl in the 70's; but, for hives... The sleep thing related to this drug never affected me, though.)

As for melatonin, I have no clue what to recommend for you... :-(

Except for pain in My back and severe anxiety, I have very little problem going to sleep, though back pains and/or severe anxiety can make getting to sleep harder, which can make Me into an insomniac temporarily.

Maybe one day I'll get a sleep number queen sized bed, that will or should cure the back problems, though not the severe anxiety that I'm cursed with, a study I read says anxiety has something to do with IQ(http://www.livescience.com/36259-anxiety-linked-high-iq.html).

Even with the CPAP, melatonin, and Ambien, I still can't get my mind to shut off unless the TV is on but showing something relatively boring. Something I really want to watch will keep me awake instead of lulling me to sleep. Usually, Alton Brown or Guy Fieri is my lullaby of choice.

My dr. started me with 3mg of melatonin but said I could double it if I wanted. After a few days, I started taking 2 at a time. When they ran out, it was cheaper to buy 5mg and take 1 instead, and it works about the same.

A loud noise like a fan is not good, although the noise is not as bad as the draft from it.

DON'T DO SLEEP NUMBER - IT'S A CROCK!!! I just got rid of mine earlier this year in favor of a Tempurpedic. The Tempurpedic is 150 X BETTER!!!!! :-) I'll NEVER GO BACK to Sleep Number; nor, a regular bed again. :-)

Tempurpedic is MORE EXPENSIVE; but worth it. Mine is over $2,000; BUT, I qualified for 36 Months 0.00 Interest and low payments. Payments were $70+ per month at the beginning of the year; but, I've been managing to budget $100 per month. I will have a full year's worth of payments in this coming February; and March's payment I will drop to $70 even. Minimum payments keep dropping as I keep paying the $100 per month; now min. is down to $61. I will have this definitely paid off before 2017. Got my bed through Sleep Train; aka: Got Sleep.

The Queen C-2 Sleep Number bed that I got rid of was $1,389.00 after delivery and setup fees from Sleep Number. After 5.5 months, it wasn't comfortable anymore; but, it was past the 100 day return policy, and still under warranty. So, I suffered through until early this year when I dumped the Sleep Number for the Tempurpedic. Wish I could have gotten something back from Sleep Number for having to dump a new bed in favor of another new bed, but sales doesn't work that way...

So, if you can't finance; and I understand why, I recommend staying with a higher quality regular spring mattress set. Your back will be better off than getting and suffering through an expensive Queen Sleep Number bed. Regular spring mattresses and box sets can be had much cheaper than the Sleep Number bed.

Whatever you choose, good luck. Back pain is NO FUN, and I understand you wanting something new; but, just wanted to impart my wisdom and experience your way so that you don't lose out on nearly $1,400 like me, for something that doesn't work.

Well I can suffer on for a while longer, My back is just stiff and I'm pretty sure I have OA in My spine, since I have had OA in My right shoulder since I was at least 40(I fell on My right shoulder in the US Army from heat exhaustion, of course no records for this exist, OA there can come only from a fall the wiki said), I do have OA in both of My hips and evidently My knees and ankles too now, since I'm taking ibuprofen on a daily basis here in the winter now. My cane is getting a large workout these days.
