My machines are in a completely different room than my bedroom. So, I don't hear them, (if they were on at night, which they aren't), from my bedroom.

However; I still have the occasion to wake up during the night and NOT be able to get back to sleep for other reasons... :-(

My PC is in the kitchen nearby, at night I hear a fan in the summer that's in My bedroom or a heater or the PC in the winter from My bedroom.

Spud -- My Dell is in same room. Yes, would probably seem overly-quiet, without
it, although it isn't very noisy. It's nice to have something useful going on
in the background, even when I'm practicing my viola da gamba.

I can't hear my computers from my bedroom, but the house ventilation fan runs 24/7.

In the Navy, I trained myself to listen to the background noise, even while sleeping. Major changes in ventilation fan speed or other noises usually meant something had or was about to happen, that might need my full attention. Same thing in the propulsion plant - changes in noise levels required attention. 25 years after I left the boats, and 22 years after I retired, I'm still that way.

One of the reasons I don't sleep well in hotels - takes several nights to get used to the background noise.

Bad back and a 70 yr old bladder have changed my sleep patterns for the worse. As my 93 yr old father says getting old is a bitch but it beats the alternative.

I'm a card carrying charter member of Team Insomnia, whether there is background noise or dead silence.

I never sleep enough; I never feel well-rested when I wake up. I do remember my vivid crazy dreams, though!

My computer makes 61 dB of white noise, with the eight 140 mm radiator fans, and the 250 watt chiller turning on and off, plus the four 8" fans in the tower. In the summer that is accompanied by the AC. It is like sleeping on the deck of an aircraft carrier, but if for some reason, that noise changes, I wake right up.

On the other hand, sometimes I don't get to sleep until 2-3 in the morning, and sometimes I wake up at 2-3 in the morning and can't get back to sleep. We are used to the white noise, so that doesn't contribute to missing sleep.

Slight side note: Get tested for Sleep Apnea, Gordon. My wife was the same way-we got her on a system and she sleeps better then she has in 20 years.

If the power goes out, my wheelchair charger beeps so I'm aware anyways.

3 computers, but only one of them makes much noise when it gets the right type of workunit. Not as loud as idiots on mud tires* on the freeway 3/4 mile away. Then they built the sound wall and that made it nice. Of course if a flock of ghetto birds** comes by ... <ed>Speaking of birds the wild parrots will wake anyone up if they are around at sunrise!

*Mud tires for freeway driving in Sunny Southern California???
**Police and Media helicopters.

I often wake up drenched in perspiration. Something's not right, I know that.

Do get tested. Bad sleep long term is indicative of other bad things which should be fixed.

My livingroom has my two crunchers plus a humidifier now that we are allmost in winter. The Noise level peaks at 55 DB,s. I keep an overhead fan running in the bedroom while the wife and I sleep. I suffer from tinnitis bad. Have ever since I was 4 or 5 years old. I do wake up when the power goes out. Its the silence.
But the I grew up hearing truck traffic 24/7 before the intersates were built. And we lived with in hearing distance of a rail road track.

@ Donald. I know what you mean. In the USAF I was in Crash and Rescue. We did 24 hours on and had 24 off. The bases I was at allways had 24 hour flying. Wed go to bed listening to planes take off and land.
There was one time we were asleep and we all woke up just about the same time. I cant say I or anyone else heard it. But an F-106 had done his engine run up and then hit his after burner to take off. We woke up when it quit. Thats when we got the alarm that we had an abort of take off. turned out it was just a malfunction on a sensor.
Buts its wierd how you can be asleep and still now about whats going on around you.

I had been at a base that had F-106's for two years before I went to this base.

And yes do learn to sleep being right on the flight line.

I am my mother's caregiver, so I don't really have a solid sleep pattern.

I was My mother's care giver, for almost 20 years, I now have Her ashes, when I'm buried, She will be too, seems like I'm still taking care of Her...

As to waking up drenched, it depends on how warm or cool the bedroom is here, so yeah I wake up that way too, I have a thermal blanket over Me, if it gets really cold I add a small quilt, though now with the electric heater in place I could sleep with just a sheet over Me.

I suspect you're waking up drenched because you're not breathing right at night. You can still have a sleep pattern caring for your Mom.

It's very possible I'm not breathing right. Maybe my mother's doctor would consider taking me on; I've never had a GP for myself.
