Message 1747182 - Posted: 6 Dec 2015, 3:54:52 UTC

Good Day all,
I currently got my i7-3770k running 24/7 and its dead silent. I want to add some happiness to my number crunching by adding a GPU.Does anyone know any GPUs that will be deadsilent running 100% FOR boinc?
Thank you

Heat is the enemy of all components, but you know that.

Next, how much RAC are you looking out of that GPU?

A small 750Ti isn't too bad with noise level and give a nice boost to your RAC.

If you are wanting a major boosting GPU then you need to be able to remove that heat when you run a GPU full out.

That usually means the fans on that GPU will be running fast (and usually loud) to cool that card.

I can't think of a totally silent high end GPU unless you are talking about water cooled systems.

Hybrids are a mix, they run cooler than most, therefore their fans tend to be lower RPMs than a pure air cooled GPU.

If we knew what is important then we could point you in a general direction.

A small 750Ti isn't too bad with noise level and give a nice boost to your RAC.

It also depends on what your usual ambient temperatures are.

I've got several GTX 750Tis with cooling that is considered overkill for a 60W video card. However crunching Seti, in mid to high 30°c temperatures, means the fans are running at 2,200 rpm most of the time.
They're not that loud, but they certainly aren't quiet.

On the rare occasions the indoor temperature drops below 30°c they (and the rest of the system) are very quiet. On the couple of occasions it's made it down to the mid 20°s you need to be within a metre of the system to hear the fan noise (GPU, CPU, case & power supply).

Even if the video card itself makes little or no noise, you will be producing more heat inside the case, reducing the cooling of the CPU, requiring it's fan, the PSU (Power Supply Unit) & any case fan(s) to run that much faster to keep the system cool.

EDIT- there are some passively cooled GPUs around, but the amount of RAC they produce is very low, and the heat they produce has to be removed by your system & PSU fans, so what is quiet now may not be the case, even with a passively cooled GPU. And only a relatively little boost in processing.

If you truly want absolute silence, then an ASUS GT630-SL-2GD3-L is probably about your upper limit. I've got one of those here on my daily driver. It's passively cooled and very low wattage.

On the other hand, as mentioned in the previous responses, the single fan GTX 750 Tis run very quiet, especially if you use something like Precision X to control the fan speed based on temperature. I've got a couple of those running on my xw9400, actually residing outside the case.

Have a look at the Zotac "Zone Editions", they are dead silent, because they are passively cooled. I have this one:
https://www.zotac.com/de/product/graphics_card/gt-640-zone-edition

It is not the king of the hill performer, but its absolutely silent and is running cool under full load.
Aloha, Uli

I see they have a gtx750 zone too

What about not so small GPU but with water cooling and big radiator to exclude fan from config?

Nice find with that 750 Zone.
