Space.com posted a story about a black hole that was observed devouring a star but it only had annimations of the event and I can't find any other sources for the story. Is this news or are they rehashing old information? Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. I found the following article on facebook: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2015/11/27/scientists-just-caught-a-black-hole-swallowing-a-star-and-burping-a-bit-back-out/ rOZZ Music Pictures |

Thanks Julie. I wonder why there are no actual images of the event. Your article, while more informative, still featured an artists reconstruction of the event. That is a striking image but I think the black hole and star in question are here in the milky way galaxy and much closer. There were articles last year that were discussed where the super massive black hole at the center of the milky way is believed to be on the verge of consuming a large gas cloud that is spiraling toward the black hole, but I haven't seen any recent publications with up to date information. I'm too lazy to do that. If they have found new revelations about black holes they will end up making the news or someone here will make a post. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

I have probably seen the same article and images as you have some months ago. It's some real telescope images showing when animated you see huge gas clouds making a turn into a what presumble is a black hole. I have searched for that article again but cannot find it again. Perhaps the event takes a long time and astronomers will present some more images later. |

Black Hole's Rejected Snack Becomes Science Goldmine Remember that mysterious cloud of gas that was supposed to be on a collision course with the supermassive black hole in the center of our galaxy? Well, astronomers are still trying to work out why it wasn’t sucked in, and why it didn’t spark the mother of all cosmic fireworks displays. http://www.space.com/31524-black-holes-rejected-snack-becomes-science-goldmine.html Bob, you might like this. :) |

Thanks Lynn. Like usual what happened wasn't anything like what the astronomers were expecting. I guess it will take several years for the experts to sort out what really happened and formulate new theories about the workings of black holes.
