Are Christmas gifts considered tips? I usually give a little something to my paperperson and postperson. I also put a little something in the Christmas cards I give to the employees that devote time to my projects at my engineering and architectural firms. I am also known for giveing big baskets of goodies to the City and County offices I work with. In California as long as the gift is to an office and can be shared with all of the employees, it's allowed.

Yes but I think there is a price cap. Any time our department gave a gift to a physician's office, it had to be ok'd and recorded by somebody who made sure we didn't go over a price cap. We always appreciate referrals, but we can't look like we're giving somebody a "kick-back". Same deal with medical equipment vendors who gifted holiday baskets to our department. We couldn't accept anything that was over-the-top. Not only is it important to avoid impropriety, but it is important to avoid even the APPEARANCE of impropriety.

Thankfully we pay people over here a reasonable wage so this custom is rarely seen anywhere in this country.

Cheers.

So no tipping at the pubs, or even expensive restaurants?

I dunno i usually tip very good 20-50% but i will not tip anyone at dunkin donuts or McDonalds

i always get 6 donuts and everytime i say 6 donuts please i get some stupid reply

i'd like 6 donuts plz .....dozen or half a dozen? ......facepalm
i'd like 3 jelly donuts and 3 glazed donuts .....how many is that ? ...facepalm

Mcdonalds needs a 3rd window so you can trade in all the wrong stuff you got at the second one

call from the doctor: hi can you come in asap ? i show up 10 minutes later clerk tells me i need to make an appointment and if 1st of january of 2016 would be good for me .....facepalm

Wendys: hi i'd like a large fry and a lime coke .......would you like some fries with that order? and again facepalm

Burger king drivethrough in florida: Hi i'd like a no 1 no lettuce no pickles .....no habla english.......uhhhmmmmm can i at least get my burger ? .... no habla english....

i was at perkins the other day and i get seated they hand me the menu i order the drink they ask me what i want to eat i put my order in and i wait about 20 minutes in the waitress comes back to inform me that the cook quit 3 hours ago and i cannot get any food but i need to pay for the drink ......

Once, I went to a Mc's and ordered a grilled chicken with no tomato. I paid and got my order and drove a couple miles away before I looked in the bag. After eating the sandwich, I drove back to the Mc's and returned their tomato, in the wrapper with the NO TOMATO special order tag still stuck on it.

There's another Mc's nearby that has screwed me enough times that I won't go there any more. The last time, even the manager couldn't comprehend the error I was trying to explain to him. He finally gave me $5 and I decided that was close enough and left.

I keep my orders at drive-thru fast food places as simple as possible. I don't ever ask for anything "different".

I have to laugh!! If you people didn't use these places they would go out of business, then we would all be rid of them :-))

I like the convenience, the food isn't expensive, and isn't terrible, and I don't want them to go out of business.

But back to tipping - do those of you who live in countries where it isn't as prevalent feel you get consistently good service?

It's quite simple really, if you don't get good service you don't go back and you also tell all your friends. Even easier these days with social media.

That's a very logical point, but I think it would be hard for someone accustomed to a tipping procedure to excel at work in a place that didn't allow it, even if the base wage was much better.

There are now businesses whose business is to "clean up" the bad reviews other businesses get on social media.

Also logical, but the question was about countries that don't have tipping as we know it in America in the first place.

Right. If I somehow fell through a wormhole and landed in Timbuktu where they don't know what tipping is, I just wonder if the service would be the same.

My experiences in Scandinavia, where tipping is pretty much unknown, is that most service staff makes an effort to make your experience pleasant, or at least not too unpleasant. Sure, you run into the occasional jerk, but they are the exception. They still know that you won't come back if you don't like the service.

You will see that occasionally in the big smoke and tourist areas, but generally here if they give good quality food/drink & service they'll stay in business.

Cheers.

A 10% tip is already included in the price.
The restaurant have to pay income tax for it.
But usually you give another 10% if you think the service was good.

While on vacation years ago I took a recreational class at a resort on Hamilton Island, Australia. After the class was over I attempted to tip the instructor and completely embarrassed her. That was how I learned (the hard way) that tipping was not a part of the Australian culture!!!
