I've noticed that there is something wrong with my "tasks in progress"-list:

There are 20 additional workunits in the task list that appear nowhere on my computer*.
For example, right now my local Boinc client shows 18 Multibeam WUs waiting to be processed by my Nvidia GPU.
However, clicking on "tasks in progress" on my account webpage shows 38 GPU workunits.
Where are those 20 additional workunits hiding?

Please, unhide Your computers, so we can see Your hosts.

There are many things BOINC reports (like GPU driver version etc) what could help us to solve Your problem.

As your own Thread title suggest, those 20 GPU tasks may well be "Ghosts" - tasks that were assigned to your computer but were never downloaded to it.

Usually this happens during periods when comms with the servers are very heavy, or there was a problem with your Internet service. The message from the Scheduler assigning the Tasks never got to your computer, so it didn't download them. There is a function allowing "Lost" Tasks to be resent to you, but I think that has been turned off for awhile now. Being able to look at your computers and their Task lists, or knowing when the "Lost" tasks were assigned, would help determine which is the most likely cause.

I also have a "Ghost" on one of my boxes, dating back to late October. It will eventually time out, and be resent to another cruncher.

I too have Ghost tasks however mine are because I reloaded Lunatics to change one off the apps it was using , I have 79 ghosts .

So you can also have Ghosts if you have played around with optimising or reloading Lunatics without running down your buffer before making changes .

Changing you appinf.xml file will also give you Ghosts if you haven't edited it correctly But as others have said they will time out when the due dates come up .
