Not exactly a crunching question but where can I view my XP PC's up time (since switched on..)??

Also what other interesting software do people use to enhance their BOINC or SETI usage or experience? (Does not have to be project linked but just interesting for SETI BOINC users!)

Any low resource PC monitoring software that keeps a real(ish) time log (EG. text file) of basic information such as up time, CPU usage and so on?

Also I have quite a nice compact star chart program. How can tell which bit of sky my WU is pointing at and extract basic co-ordinates to feed into the start map? (remember I'm a complete newbie at this :)

I use a program called CoolMon. It's completely customizable and has tons of options for display that I don't use. My setup just happens to look like this:

It's really easy to use and setup. http://www.coolmon.org/

You can use this tool from Microsoft:

I use Samurize which is a competive program to Coolmon. I tried both and settled with Samurize. They even have a script to read data for Boinc. (do a search for Boinc) to find it.

http://www.samurize.com/modules/news/

Check out both programs and decide for yourself.

On my standalone XP PC I had a problem with this. I ran CMD and then uptime and got:

"UPTIME was unable to connect to host: \\DESKTOP01"

Where DESKTOP01 is my PC.

Any ideas?

I looked at Samurize ages ago. i used GeoShell for ages. I was just a bit daunted by all the tweaking and setup needed and was worried by the overheads required.

I might revisit it to see how much easier it is to setup now.

Installed and fairly easy (pointy clicky) for me to get up and running. For now this looks like it will give me the basic PC info I'm after.

Cheers

For those with 24/7 connections you can monitor your pc's uptime & cpu load remotely from a centralized web site ...

http://uptimes.hostingwired.com/index.php

create an account

add a host

copy the registration key

download and install the wonko uptime client

paste registration key in the 'settings' tab

uptimes server is uptimes.hostingwired.com

let 'er rip

(ignore error message)

stats are updated every 5 minutes

I found out an in house way of getting uptime info from XP.

In Start Menu _ RUN: CMD then SYSTEMINFO

That gives you a host of info plus UpTime details.

You can create a batch file to dump this to a text file in the following manner:

systeminfo.exe >systeminfo.txt

Cool, I'll have to remember that. On computers without BgInfo from SysInternals, I've always used Network Connections, LAN, Status (=double-click). That shows the connection up-time (and I usually know if I've unplugged or disabled since last boot).

And you can set it to display an icon in the system tray. So the next time you only need to click the icon. It always displays my uptime, even after disconnections.

WebTemp

displays your uptime as well. It plots measured temperatures, voltages and fan speeds (for example from SpeedFan or MBM) and keeps an eye on your system's health (powers it off before the core melts down *g*). Additionally it shows SETI classic / BOINC data.
The best thing is yet to come: It uploads the chart to an FTP server so you can remotely monitor the system(s) LIVE.
