So for home use, I grabbed a 19" rack out of one of the storage units, and plan on running a pile of K80's (I think about 10, but that hits my budget max....)for running SETI/BOINC.... will the apps support this? 80 TF is a really big number for some random person like me, but I have lived with the steady hum of computers since I was about 8 years old....
Help?

Just curious.. Why the Tesla K80?

I understand it is a dual Chip so there is that but....

You could go for a several 980Ti hybrids for about the cost 1 Tesla.

If you look at the top computer, he's running 5 980Tis.

There is also the power usage with the Maxwells vs kepler

Someone else know how many GPUs Boinc will support.

I would think the apps would run, but would probably suggest running the lunatics to get the most out of your cards.

Like most Nvidia cards it will be a case of try and see, but the sweet spot appears to be three.
Don't forget that you will need a decent CPU to feed those beasts.

Thank you for the response.... the 980Ti is pennies on the dollar compared to the k80's.... so it is WAY more cost-effective. at about $500 each, they make the K80 look ridiculously expensive. Thank you for the insight.
The network at home is crazy fast (OC-768, as I worked for one of the telecoms that we designed/made them before but bubble burst), but the net download speed is only 120Mb/sec... Not many houses I have seen that have whalebones on the ceiling ;-) fortunately I can store many a terabyte of unprocessed data... Let me see what I can find in terms of a motherboard that will hold a pile of these 980's, as I would rather not build one myself. Recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

You won't need to store terra bytes of unprocessed data - the limit is 100 tasks per processor, so 10 GPUs is 1000 tasks. An AstroPulse task is 8Mb, and a MultiBeam is ~350kb. There are a few boxes that will take a decent number of GPUs as add-ons to a fairly mundane motherboard - don't forget that these cards are double width.

As far as Motherboards, the question is, do you want to mount the GPUs on the MoBo or are you ok with risers to connect the GPUs to the board?

I've seen extreme mods where they hang the GPU from a shelf above the Motherboard and connect the GPUs to the board via the risers.

I myself have 2 machines each housing 4 GPUs in them. I did this as I wanted as a compact unit as I could make.

So the question becomes, how many GPUs do you want to run, do you want to use risers or not

After about 4 GPUs the next question turns to CPU chip.

In my machines, 1 is an intel and the other is a AMD. Both are 8 cores but I turned on the hyperthread on the intel. Comparing them head to head, the intel does more work and has more headroom for even more GPUs. The AMD is at it's max.

The top cruncher here on Seti currently runs an Intel chip and he has room still to add even more GPUs if he wanted to.

Him and I run ASUS but there are severe problems with that board and tech support is none existent. If I had to do it again, I would probably go with a EVGA board.

Lastly, PSU...Currently I need a 1600W just to power my Intel, 4 GPU machine. so that will be the next item to consider. There are several places on the web where you can input the data and it will tell you how much PSU you will need. EVGA also has 1 on their website. I used some website recommend by Tomshardware but don't remember it's location.

Good luck...
