I have only installed SETI on maybe 8 or 10 computers in the last 16 years but every time it has been an exercise in frustration.

I just bought an ASUS laptop with win 10. I have downloaded Boinc, installed, chose SETI for a project and had every indication that I had succeeded, right down to the window that says finish. Where have I gone wrong?

Are you choosing to use an existing account, or are you specifying a new account with each install?

[Edit] I see this host in your account with Windows 10. Is this not that laptop you're referring to?

Just select the projects tab, highlight seti@home in the projects list, and click on "remove" on the left.

Then connect to seti@home as a new project.
menu (tools)-->add project--> select seti@home and select "yes, existing user" enter you existing e-mail and password.

Dave, if the computer listed as Windows 10 of the two shown, it is doing just fine but is that the one you are speaking of?

No, however, I just got it going. You should now see 3 computers. I'm ashamed to admit all of the dumb mistakes I was making.

Good, that you got it going.
Just keep an eye on the temperatures.
Laptops tend to overheat under full load.

Thanks for the advice. It is rather warm in my computer room. I'll keep it in my bedroom which I keep cooler.

Every time I see one of these threads, I get this running through my head..................\
Another freakin' laptop.
Oh f. Here we go again.
Another guy trying to burn up their lappy./

The old adage about not being able to fix stupid comes to mind.
Lappys are just not meant for this work.
They can do it, but at some peril.
I have all I can do to keep dedicated workstations, side off, to not blow up in the effort. A lappy??? Give me a freakin' break. They can do it, just not as well as a real computer....

Every time I read a lappy thread.............just pisses me off.
You guys don't get it, do ya?
The flippin' things are gonna burn up. I have not heard of one EVER that was designed for heat loads of 100% usage. The did not care about that when they designed them. It was not on the little chart on the wall.

They wanted it to be pretty.................pretty.
OK, so you got that much, now fold the freakin' thing up and go to bed.

EDIT....\

So, now that I have alienated half of the planet, how's that workin' for ya?
As I suspected, not too well in many cases.
I have no sympathy for laptops. Lori's just pisses me off every time I watch her boot it up..............for like, 5 minutes. Asus freaking something or other. She refuses to let me try to fix anything on it. "No, Mark, it's ok....it's just booting..."

9 rigs, all side off, and it's 65f in here.
It's gonna hit 80f today. Meow.

How long would you estimate it will last running 24/7 full bore?

Not mine to guess. My original core 2 dual core is still running strong after many years.
Since 2007..............that thing is still pretty zippy, given it is only 2 cores.

I have toasted a dedicated processor just once.
That was a mobo failure, and not really the processor's fault. And it was running at about 105% of Intel's rated voltage. Yea, I used to push things just a tad.

Intel stuff just does not go south too often.
As hot as some lappys get, you are quite on your own there.

I think it's in the manuals somewhere...as in "we don't suggest 100 percent usage like, ever"...LOL.

Make sure you are running something like TThrottle http://efmer.com/b/. That is how I keep my Laptop in line. I have run my single laptop, whichever one I have had running, doing SETI 24/7 but with TThrottle running all the time. It has to be really cool (winter in my house) for the computer to actually be running 100%. Just my suggestion for a happy laptop.

EDIT: and I do not run the GPU, only CPU tasks.

The question is about running at "full bore", which I take as only using the laptop's own thermal management.
That really is a bit of string - if you are fortunate and the room is very cool, and the laptop has very good intrinsic cooling and thermal management it will last a lot longer than one that is in a very hot room and has very poor intrinsic cooling and thermal management.
Of course you can improve vastly the situation by using a PROPER external cooling pad - one which actually cools the incoming air to below ambient, or a utility like TThrotle.
