My mom made lasagna once, from scratch, it was very good. Today I'd get it in a box too.

My father's brother George married a Sicilian wife.
You never tasted such meals as she could prepare.

Anybody use turmeric? I've recently found it to be a nice spice additive when cooking pork chops, and I even sprinkle a little in bean and vegetable soups.

Of course. In curries turmeric is essential.
Arabic food also use a lot of turmeric.
By it self it doesn't taste anything (some says a bit like ginger) but it seems like together with other food it works like a taste enhancer.

I agree. It somehow blossoms when added to food.

Message 1862586 - Posted: 21 Apr 2017, 2:20:29 UTC

I used to do the satisfaction survey on my McDonald's receipts all the time, but lately I rarely bother. However, I just did one. Here's what I put in the description of my problem.

"I first got in line for the drive-thru at 3:59 pm. It took until 4:11 just to get to the speaker to order. Then it took several more minutes to get to the first window to pay. I finally got to the second window at 4:23, only to be told they cook hash browns to order and it would be another three minutes and I should pull up to wait. I said I had already been there 25 minutes. They did not believe me, saying they had no orders older than five minutes. I said it took a long time just to get there to order. I tried to also ask why they didn't start cooking the hash browns as soon as I ordered, but she walked away. From the time they told me three more minutes, it took six. Surely it doesn't take 18 minutes to cook hash browns. They offered me a free drink, but I was late for an appointment and didn't want to wait any longer for them to give it to me. The time stamp on my receipt is 4:11. I finally got my food and left at 4:29, a full thirty (30) minutes after I got in line."

This was not a location I often go to, and after this I probably won't again anytime soon.

As you can imagine from my recent KFC experience, I totally understand, David. I know this may be an oxymoron, but I do expect more out of McDonald's.

Kentucky Fried Chicken
1900 Colonel Sanders Lane
Louisville, Kentucky 40213

Dear Kentucky Fried Chicken,

My recent experience with visiting your restaurant at 3905 Taylorsville Road, in Louisville, Kentucky, has been so problematic that I feel it should be brought to your attention.

On March 29th, I purchased an Extra Crispy 12 piece Bucket. I asked the person at the counter if I could request certain pieces, and he said, yes, but advised I couldn't order “all breasts”, and that made sense to me, so I asked for 4 breasts, and the rest thighs. As I looked at my receipt, I saw that I paid more than the menu price for the Bucket, and when I inquired about this, I was told that a 12 piece bucket only allows 3 breasts, and more are upcharged. I should have been informed of this before the order was assembled, and actually I think the menu board should explain it. The manager took the extra charge off, so I was ok, and went to my car.

Once I got in my car, I looked in the Bucket and discovered it was all Original Recipe. I walked back in and reported the mistake, and was given a new Bucket with the correct Extra Crispies. When I got home, I pulled the pieces out and there were only 10! I couldn't help but laugh. I called the store and was asked my name, and that I'd be added to “the book” for a replacement meal(4 pieces to make up for the missing 2). That seemed more than fair to me, but kind of odd they had a “book” system for such things. How often does this happen?

On Saturday, April 8th, I decided to cash in my entry in “the book”. The counter person was running around like a chicken with his head cut off(pardon the pun), refilling the utensils and napkins in the dining room, and said he'd be right with me. I think he should have stopped what he was doing and returned to the cash register. Meanwhile, another customer walked in. Once he got back to the counter, I explained I was in “the book” and wanted to redeem it. He said, “no problem”, but that he'd have to find the manager. The next customer happened to be in the book, too! At this point, I had a smile on my face, but it really is kind of dark humor. He apologized and said he didn't know where the manager was. He said, “she might be in the bathroom or something”. Ok, we wait. I can see what look like two employees out in the parking lot, talking to someone in a car. The counter person runs outside and gets one of them and she comes inside, and opens “the book”. It's a huge binder with tabs, and she finds my name, and then tells me they are out of white meat, and it will be a 20 minute wait. I just take whatever they have ready, and go on my merry way.

I bring all of this to your attention because I feel there is clearly a disorganization problem at this location. There's been a Kentucky Fried Chicken in that spot for many years. Of course it's been remodeled a couple times, but I remember the iconic red and white colors and the bucket rotating on the sign pole. My mother always likes getting a couple pieces of your chicken on Derby, and I'm only a very occasional customer myself, but please, for the sake of the brand, and our hometown pride, look into this. If the Colonel was alive, he'd be snapping his cane in there. I've heard stories about his surprise visits, and if something wasn't to his liking, he'd fire the whole staff, and take over. I don't want anybody to lose their job. Just please look into things at this location. I think they need guidance.

Sincerely,

Gordon M. Lowe

David, I've given up on many Mickey Dee's locations. What I've noticed, if I've been able to know, is at the few corporate owned stores I never have problems. Franchise stores, orders flat wrong, wrong prices on the registers and the menu boards, product late, soda machines that don't work or have only 1 flavor available. In other words, everything that can go wrong does and all at once and no one cares or ever fixes it. Saw one where the employee put the napkins that the customers left on the tables back in the dispenser. Saw another where the employee picked up several drink lids that were down in the drain trough and shook the crap off and put them back in the rack. Even was in one that had raw sewage running on the floor and they thought it was fine to be open. Needless to say I didn't and neither did the health department.

As to KFC, in this neck of the woods several outlets have closed. I had issues with them, usually out of product can you wait 20 minutes ...... a couple of times I know I came in after someone bought out all the white meat and it was either wait or take a couple extra pieces of dark. Can't say as I ever seen one that wasn't clean though. I do appreciate that they don't do the old Mickey Dee trick and make up huge batches to go stale under heat lamps, but at lunch or dinner rush that fryer should never be idle, and with their data mining they should have a good idea just how much they need to make every hour of the day. In any case I've found a sit down place that can serve me a 1/2 chicken in a three course meal for about 1/2 the price KFC wants for theirs. Different spices, but also a lot less salt and that is a good thing.

Anyway had a Hula burger from Islands tonight.

I've seen good experienced military cookhouse managers who could do that before PC's were invented.

Personally, I never use "Drive-Thru's", I will park and go and take a look inside before I decide on anything. ;-)

Cheers.

I'm sure they didn't need pictures on the keys of the food items so they knew what they were ringing up ...

When I drive a friend to local Jack in the Box, We always use the drive up, Me I just drive and help with the order, since She is almost too far away to be heard clearly, so I repeat what She says.

I want to see what the inside of the joint looks like 1st before it goes inside of me.

They may look good on the outside, but appearances can be deceptive (and I'm never in that big of a hurry). ;-)

Cheers.

I've just got back a business trip to China.
Most eating places have pictures of what the food is - great when one's Chinese is non-existent. However the biggest issue is that in most places what arrive only bore a passing semblance to what arrived in the dish. Service was generally quite rapid.

You mean like McDonalds hamburgers pics and comparing it to what you actually are served?

No, at least with the MacDuck burger pictures you see a bun, a pate and some other stuff, but frequently in China one would see something that looked like a lump of meat and it would turn up as a three or four chicken beaks....

"Meat" is a generic term that is normally used in China for anything that isn't fish, chicken or tofu. After a few days I had worked out what the squiggles for "meat" and "chicken" are, so was not expecting anything to do with chicken when the beaks arrived.
