Message 1858759 - Posted: 31 Mar 2017, 23:46:25 UTC - in response to Message 1858661.

Last night, I found out my go-to Chinese carry-out is closed and apparently has been at least since December. There is a sticker on the door that does NOT say it was closed by the Board of Health, but does say no one can serve food there without BoH permission. There's one about a half mile closer to me, but I don't like it. The one a couple miles closer is okay, but you have to climb up a flight of stairs to get to it. I should see if they deliver (but I don't like to pay delivery fees).

There's a Chinese place close to me that I wish was good, but it just isn't. In fact, I don't even understand how it stays open. There's never any customers, and I've been by there many different times and days of the week. The building itself is kind of ramshackle, but they have an "A" grade and "100%" posting from the health dept. in their window. It's a very bizarre place; like it's a front for something.

Maybe it is. Is there an Asian "massage" place nearby? Whenever I see those businesses close together, I wonder if they share ownership.

Years ago, I heard the chain Long John Silver's was a money laundering front for the mob, although now it's owned by Yum, same parent company as KFC, Taco Hell, and Pizza Hurt.

(Misspellings intentional.)

Potato Mushroom Scallop
Enjoy!

I've never made scalloped potatoes (except the pull it out of the freezer and nuke it kind), but I'm guessing this is a fairly typical recipe except for the mushrooms. Personally, I don't like fungi. Other than that, it sounds good.

What? A fun-guy like you doesn't care for fungi?!!!

Yes, it is a fairly standard scalloped potato recipe. You could leave the "shrooms" out. You could substitute slices of yellow onion for the "shrooms", provided you precooked the onions well. Onions can over-whelm potatoes if not cooked down some.

Out here "there is a ongoing construction on the Calico Rd Exit of a 25,060 square foot Gas Station with 32 fuel dispensing Pump/convenience store & food establishment", the site I got that from doesn't say what gas station or food establishment it is, but it had better be popular, since all the real popular places are down at Ghost Town Rd. The building is gearing up for stucco soon, and is the newest building in Yermo, thankfully this unlike downtown Yermo can be seen from the 15 fwy, water tank and all.

Great looking recipe, Angela. My mother used to make some sort of scalloped potato dish, and it was really simple, but she managed to caramelize the potatoes in such a delicious way. I don't know how she did it.

Yes. I usually heat onions in oil for a while so they get soft before I add them in sauces and stews/scallops.

There are many outlets that are a combination of KFC with either TB or LJS. Trying to think if I've ever seen a KFC/PH.

I think Yum! spunoff LJS. In fact, the the dual-branded stores have pretty much disappeared here. Every three months or so, I get called in for a KFC taste test at Yum! HQ. They recently raised the pay to $35. It's fun.

It's nice to know why citrus fruits and I don't get along, that might also extend to Mangoes...

I have heard that mangoes are botanically related to poison oak. Citrus is not.

I have to wear gloves to peel mangoes because there is something in mango fruit skin that gives me a rash. Once the peel is off, I have no problem devouring mangoes. Yum!

I've heard that Cashews are similarly problematic because there is a toxin in the cashew nut shell that has to be dealt with before getting to the yummy part.

Well, a quick wiki-check seems to reveal that "urushiol" is the problem. Mangoes, poison oak, poison ivy, poison sumac and cashews all produce this irritant.

Dang! What did we ever do before the internet?

And the yummy part is that, it's supposedly fattening too.

@ Angela: Mangoes seem to be related to cashews according to the wiki, go figure.

Why does food allergies increase so much?
Food allergies affect as many as 15 million people in the United States, including 6 million children, according to the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network. The occurrence of peanut and tree nut allergies seems to have tripled between 1997 and 2008. Whether this increase is due to better diagnoses or an actual increase in food-allergic individuals is not clear.
Not only in the US but in Europe as well.

Dinner was good.

I try not to think of any one food as "fattening" or as "not fattening". If something is high calorie, I still eat it. I just try to control (not always successfully) how much and how often I consume that food.

I control My eating cashews, by not buying them, since I only come in contact with them at My sister in laws place. That's pretty good control if you ask Me.

I tend to believe better diagnoses.

I also believe this is the case with many other things in society today.
