It is not for floppy disks.

Congrats Carlos as the closest without naming the device.

Digital StorageWoeks disk removal tool.

It is for removing/inserting Disk drive enclosures from Digital StorageWorks 1, StorageWorks 2 and StorageWorks 3 storage systems. It hooks over the two clips on each side of the drive, squeezing them together, and releasing the clips that hold the drive enclosure in the BA356 shelf. This allows easy removal of thedisk (it also saves broken finger nails, bruised knuckles, lost tempers etc.)

And yes, before you all point it out, it shows my age and nerdiness that I keep this without any of the kit it can be used on!
Happy Crunching,

Graham

Gary, sorry to disagree, BUT Digital (another name for the company DEC or the Digital Equipment Corporation) originally developed the StorageWorks product range to work as a Storage Management product line to go with their VAX, and later Alpha range of computers.

The basic building block of this was their BA356 series of storage shelves, capable of containing disks (starting at 1Gb and eventually up to 36Gb) in disk case, 7 cases per shelf if one power supply, or 6 if two power supplies fitted. Also in this range of products for these shelves were the TZ85, TZ86, TZ87, TZ88 and TZ89 tape drives and their derivatives, another DEC (or Digital) product line.

These shelves could then be installed in cabinets containing up to 10 shelves per 19-icnch rack. These shelves were then connected via SCSI or FWD SCSI, to controllers (the HSC and HSD ranges)and thence via DSSI, FWD SCSI or CI connections to the Computers.

I believe that StorageWorks could be connected to the PDP 11 range of systems, but I've never experienced this. I know that these shelves can be connected to PCs, as I had such a system at my home, using the Win XP native drivers for the DEC SCSI to PCI adapters.

When Compaq, and later HP took over DeEC or Digital, each then used the StorageWorks name for this and later other disk sub-systems. That is why I specifically said the StorageWorks 1 StorageWorks 2 and StorageWorks 3 product ranges, as these were the Digital (or DEC) products.

I have extensive experience of working with these products, both under VMS, and Tru64 operating systems, stand-alone and in quite large Clusters, thus I know these items very well.

If you wish to discuss this further can I suggest that we do this via PM or email, or another thread, to avoid going off-topic for this one?
Happy Crunching,

Graham

So where do we go from here? As the closest and I suppose to post the next tool? Or are you going to try a new one?

Ok it seems that close is good in horse shoes, hand grenades and tool guessing. So here is something that I have seen in use within the last few years. Ian sorry it's not for what you think and it has nothing to do with data processing.

What is this tool?

LOL...I still have one Seti rig sporting a SCSI hard drive interface, with a dedicated card in the bus for it........they used to be the rage, and worked very well.

It did NOT bake ceramics, however.

The triangular spools on top remind me of a reel-to-reel tape deck.
The circular disk below looks like a die-cutter.

Not a Badge-a-Minute press on steroids, is it?

Good observation about the reel to reel aspect but not a badge a mint.

Stamping is one function.
