Fully warranteed for 5 years or the first 140 million miles...

I hope Curiosity has a spare! That doesn't look good.

That particular hole has been there for over a year now.

What I love about those rovers:
- Opportunity: planned 90 sols, today 4100+s!
- Curiosity: planed 668s, today 1100+s!
;)

unfortunately, Spirit died after about 2200s...& it was also planed for only 90s! :(

Indeed. Opportunity is still alive and sending pictures.

It's just parked in a really boring place, unfortunately.

I'm sure they anticipated holes in the (plastic?) to happen like that. The metal ribbing of the wheels I imagine is quite sturdy enough.

Has Curiosity driven to it's destination, yet?

Curiosity is still climbing Mount Sharp (Aeolis Mons) but it is being stopped at interesting places. I don't think the wheels are made from plastic, it looks like metal to me.

They are metal. At least on the engineering test model they had running around at the JPL open house a year before launch.

How did that wheel get punctured so badly?

Curiosity is about one ton in weight and those are some very sharp rocks.

We're crossing a saddle ridge from Pahrump Hills to reach the flank of Mt. Sharp. I don't think anyone wants to find out if Curiousity can navigate through that river of dark sand between it and the mountain.
But it's going to be a bumpy ride.

And metal gets brittle and breaks easily at low temperatures.

The engineering test model in warm sunny Pasadena had punctured itself, but Earth gravity is a bit more than Mars gravity.

A typical shot from 1 day ago.

I recall being electrified by the pictures sent back from the first Viking lander in 76. It's a little odd to now be sifting through every day's batch to find something interesting enough to post.

Not much to look at unless you have to avoid it.
This route could take some time. There doesn't seem to be much open ground, mostly just broken rock with an occasional dune.
We don't like dunes.

Looks almost like slate. That area surely was under water at one time.

I can almost imagine a sign next to this that says Call Before Digging. It really does look like spray paint.
