I think that that the USA and most every other country that was not a part of the Commonwealth drive on the right side of the road as that is the way ships in a narrow passage approach each other, even British ships. Ahoy. Not sailing boats:) • Whoever has the wind on the starboard (right) side must swerve against the boat which has the wind on the port (left) side. • Have both boats wind on the starboard (right) side must the boat that are in windward (closest to the wind) swerve. • A boat catching up another boat must swerve. Railway trains has always been driving on the left side here... |

Technically GB is a constitutional monarchy nothing like the kingdoms of old when a king or queen had absolute power. Personally I have no problem with the system as it exists today. I just wonder when they will realise the error of their ways and start driving on the right side of the road :) Have you heard the term shotgun? You know it derives from horse drawn wagons and the need to defend against redcoats. :) |

It could also derive from the middle ages when they were jousting. Its more easy to hold a lance in your right hand and meet your opponent on the right side:) |

People have had to defend themselves in horse drawn wagon's long before the America's were even discovered. Also going by traffic stats, the majority of journeys only have the driver in the car, so no shotgun. |

On my hands the veins on right side looks like a H as in "Höger" (Right). On the left side they looks like a V as in "Vänster" (Left) |

Of that list Japan was the only country not directly under the influence of GB and even then Japan patterned their modernization in the early 1900s after the British example. Because we went to war with the last chap who marched across Europe forcing them to change driving sides. There were many things on his mind, that was only one of them. I think we're getting rather off topic. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

Aside from Great Britain, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus are the only left in Europe driving on the "right" side. :D In 1998, archaeologists found a well-preserved double track leading to a Roman quarry near Swindon, England. The grooves in the road on the left side (viewed facing down the track away from the quarry) were much deeper than those on the right side. These grooves suggest that the Romans drove on the left, at least in this location, since carts would exit the quarry heavily loaded, and enter it empty.[4] |

I Think the views of Monarchy in Republics are funny. As you know our country, Denmark and Norway are monarchies. And I know that Donald Trump once said that he wanted to meet the Swedish president:) |
