Hi everyone, is there anything improved in cache filling strategy on the new BOINC version or is it still b*rked in the way it either first fills GPU cache and then CPU cache or vice versa? Any other improvements worth installing the new version? Thanks in advance! Aloha, Uli |

The new v7.6.6 decides what work to request exactly the same way as other recent BOINC v7 clients have done. What gets sent by the server is up to the server, as before. There are some other changes - menu layout etc. - which don't affect how it works, but do take a bit of getting used to. There are some bug fixes - one which is essential for people running CMS-dev, another which is helpful to people running Milkyway, a slight improvement for GPUGrid, and so on - but nothing really critical. One thing which slightly annoys me is that they added a minor improvement late in development, but made a mistake in doing so - the bug has now been fixed, but the version they've released hasn't got the fix. So, in that respect at least, the new version is worse than the one it replaces. A Curate's_egg, in other words. |

I have 7.6.6 and it still has some problems. My 2x750ti + integrated AMD Spectre host downloads first AMD GPU tasks (slow), then Nvidia tasks (about 3 * faster than AMD [and I have two of them!]), after that CPU (very slow [if there is enough tasks]) So In my observations, yes, cache filling strategy is still... b*rked But that's problem in server side.... |

So it would be better to wait until BOINC v7.6.8 will be the recommended version (already available for download - if you know where... ;-)? |

So it would be better to wait until BOINC v7.6.8 will be the recommended version (already available for download - if you know where... ;-)? I'd say so, yes. I've already reported a couple of surprises with v7.6.8 - if you know where to look - but I'd say they were less likely to be a problem at SETI than the surprises in v7.6.6 |

We're going with v7.6.9 already... I know "where to look for", but is it worth a try or still considered highly alpha/buggy? Aloha, Uli |

We're going with v7.6.9 already... Not highly - just slightly. And I'm not aware of anything which would come into play with normal usage at SETI. |

So, in that respect at least, the new version is worse than the one it replaces. Yes, it does. I was thinking specifically of the one Cliff Harding and I were discussing in the FIFO?? thread. Things are still a bit confused, with new fixes (features?) being added last week and taken out again. So I don't think this is the end of the v7.6 story yet, but v7.6.9 is the best so far. |

This sounds like a bit of "Early Adopter Beta Testing" in progress... Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

This sounds like a bit of "Early Adopter Beta Testing" in progress... Sure does. The (former) staff haven't fully adapted to their new role as volunteers yet. |
