Message 1730647 - Posted: 1 Oct 2015, 14:57:50 UTC - in response to Message 1730548.

This is a really hard problem to characterize, and thus it's hard to help campus solve, but it looks like there is a router (on campus and out of our control) acting funny. Or it may be an internal problem that is difficult to track down (as this weirdness is affecting random machines at random times in random ways).

We shall see.. Sorry for all the confusing lack of connectivity. :(

- Matt

Thanks for the info. That is pretty much how many network issues go. Hopefully it is solved sooner rather than later.

Wonder if the sites are under some DDOS attack and the campus IT firewall is reacting?
That was also one of my thoughts. Hopefully nothing more sinister.
Hope there won't be spam attacks on the Dev forums, as I won't be able to stop it...

To my admittedly paranoid mind, we are an inviting target for those with ulterior motives.

So far I tried to following values:

None worked.

I presume those were all DNS servers? If so, I'm not surprised they made no difference. I don't think anyone has reported any difficulty in finding out the IP address of the server they want to contact. And that's all DNS does: it looks up the address.

The next part of the problem is to find a working route from wherever you are, to where you want to be (the IP address you just looked up). That's why it's different from your mom's house, or from the supermarket: you're starting from a different point, probably using a different ISP, and so the route will almost certainly be different.

But all routes have to converge, eventually - either at the server you're trying to reach, or at one of a finite number of aggregation routers, like inr-311, quite likely to be physically located in the same co-lo building as the server.

Rather than trying even more DNS servers (all of which should give the same reply), it would be helpful for people with time on their hands to go visit their moms, or go shopping, and try a tracert from those 'alien' ISPs - paying particular attention to those routes which get further than inr-311. That information could actually help Matt and the network elves track down which port, on which router, is misbehaving.

No addition to the Data Distribution History charts this month. All except two of the 2011 tapes (one each from 05oc and 23no) were in my database already - though I can't tell if we possibly crunched new areas from other tapes, which might have had an error the first time round.

Ah, that will make sense. But you do not want to know how difficult that is to do from a phone.

While I do have a terminal app on my Huawei, I see it doesn't do tracert, nor traceroute. So then I have to resort to using a website, like http://centralops.net/co, but trace routes from here start at their server and so the outcome is exactly the same between devices and locations.

And unfortunately, both my pub (locally), and my mom's house (three hours drive away) use the same ISP as I do, so they won't help much either.

Greetings,

I can do a traceroute, but I cannot decipher what I see. Perhaps someone else can do that.

Here is what I got from my house here in Iowa:

Actually, that does help. You end up at

 19 70 ms 68 ms 69 ms e3-48.inr-310-ewdc.Berkeley.EDU [128.32.0.97]

Before the reorganisation at the co-lo, and the upgrade to 10 Gigabit hardware (which is when we lost the Cricket Graphs), we knew that there were two near-identical gateway routers - inr-210 and inr-211, if I remember correctly. They kept one running constantly, and the other as a spare they could switch to quickly when there were problems.

The routes I was having problems with this morning all ended at inr-311, and there were other slight differences, too. Compare

e3-48.inr-310-ewdc.Berkeley.EDU [128.32.0.97]
et3-48.inr-311-ewdc.Berkeley.EDU [128.32.0.101]

It looks as if they might have switched the current spare (inr-310) into service while they work on inr-311: now, it just depends long long it takes for the internet backbone routers to recognise that the route has changed.

They're pretty much identical, getting stuck at 128.32.0.99.

EDIT: Considering that I don't have any trouble reaching the forums here at setiathome.berkeley.edu, that does seem rather puzzling to me.

I have had sporadic connections over the last 15 minutes, got my reporting in and computers filled :D

But I still can't get a traceroute to complete to help Matt out :(

I wouldn't call that "getting stuck" - I'd see it as being routed through to another set of routers which have been given stealth settings, so they don't answer with a name.

I've just tried again from here (a different machine from this morning, but on the same router). And all three of these results are from the same machine in one command prompt session.

Still can't upload my tasks. I reckon it's time for me to fire up the backup project.

Did You shutdown BOINC and reboot Your host? That did help when I did have same kind of problem.

ipconfig /flushdns did not help.

I've been able to get some work on about 1 of 10 tries. I get this message in the log:

Keith-Windows7

222 SETI@home 10/1/2015 10:02:05 AM Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server
223 10/1/2015 10:02:06 AM Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
224 10/1/2015 10:02:07 AM Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

Looks like both et3-48.inr-310 and 311-ewdc are having issues.

A little while ago, I turned on my phone's wifi here at work long enough to try to connect to Seti, and it worked. Reported 3, got 3 more (but 2 of the downloads stalled, then worked when I tried again). We have AT&T, I believe.

Now I'm remoting into my fastest home cruncher and it's just not connecting. I also have AT&T.

Now I'm doing a tracert from home to setiathome.berkeley.edu. Hops 2, 6-8, and 14-30 timed out. 13 got me to et3-47.inr-311-ewdc.Berkeley.Edu [128.32.0.103].

I do not have access to do a tracrt here at work.

I find it interesting that the received WUs dropped about 23k when all this started. No spikes or dips, just lower.

It makes me think that there may be a limit on the number of connections being enforced.
