I'm a person who has always needed at least 8 hours of sleep. I had a strict bedtime of 9 pm, growing up, and I always rested, though not actually slept, a lot in the college library, ;~). Several years ago, I took a 3rd shift job, and I never had any trouble falling asleep during the day. Now that I'm my mother's full-time care-giver, I basically sleep in extended naps, and I'd say cumulatively I get about 12 hours, which sounds like a crazy amount, but I never feel bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ;~).

I know lots of people who get very little sleep(<6 hours a day), and they seem so alert, but I guess it's partly coffee, and an extroverted personality. ;~)

How much sleep do you need?

I need much more than I ever get.
I generally manage 5 hours.......not enough.
I have had a sleep survey, and apnea has been ruled out.
I am just wired too tight to get enough downtime.
My mind is just going full speed 24/7, and I am gonna burn out with a poof one day.
It serves me well on my job, but I have no downtime to speak of.
Ever notice my posting hours? Anytime day or night.
And some wonder why I drink to try to take some stress off.

I do not take pills to get this way. I am simply strung so freaking tight I am gonna snap some day.

The energy I expend each day is not readily supported by my body.
I eat like a horse, and am losing weight. I am burning up. I am down to 156 pounds. I stand 5'9, so I am not too bad just yet.
I am cooking up a pot of mac and cheese as we speak.

I normally need 7.5-8 hours, but the bed and My back only get along for 4.5-6 hours, mostly on My side and that 4.5-6 is with a small sheet of plywood, so the rest is on the sofa-recliner in reclining mode.

Because of my mood disorder, my sleep varies. I try to get at least 8, but more is better. Most of the time I get 12 hrs of sleep.

When I was on the boats, it was rare to get more than 5.5 hours at a time, even after (or perhaps because) I became a supervisor. Even on shore duty, seldom more than 6 hours at a time unless I was exhausted or ill.

When I'm working cotton, normal shift is 0630-1500 (1530 when the 2nd shift is on). Try to be in bed by 2300, up at 0500. Off-season, closer to midnight to bed, but still up at about 0600, 0630 unless it's too warm to sleep. Then it's more like 2 hour naps, with a short trip to the fridge for something cold to drink, then back to bed. I do tend to take an afternoon nap on weekends and during the off-season.

Caffeine - in the navy, it was as much as 12 cups a day (about 1/hour), but after that much coffee I could be a little buzzy and snappish if I wasn't working on something. Nowadays, it's 1-2 cups of coffee or cans of Mt. Dew max. More than that actually makes me sleepy (ADHD, maybe?)

back as a teen I slept for 8 hours every night during the school week. Slept 12 hours on the weekend.
In the AirForce we did 24 on and 24 hours off. When on duty probally averaged 6 hours or less. Being a firefighter we raley had a shit where we didnt get at least two calls. As the base flew aicraft 24/7 we would allways get an inflight emergency. Plus if a medivac flight came in we had to do standby as they loaded or unloaded patients. Plus all crews had to rotate standbys if the base was doing hot pit refuleing. And then my Ex wife wonderd why I allways came home in the mroning and went to bed for a few hours.
Now days I usally do 8 hours. Even on the weekends.
I get home at 11:00 PM go to bed at 4:00 AM, And am up with no alarm clock at 12:00 PM.

What about dreams? I remember mine a lot, and often can pick back up in the thread of one if I wake up for just a few minutes, and go back to sleep.

Someday I hope a machine is made so we can record what our mind is dreaming.

I only remember one dream, it was from before I was 10yrs old, I had a dream of a black flying horse, My parents had a model of that too, that's probably where I got that mental image from. The horse looked like this in My head, sorry no pic of the black plastic winged horse that My parents had.

You haven't a remembered a dream since then?! I hear people say they don't dream, but I think everybody does, they just have trouble remembering; but to go so long since a dream memory is pretty wild to me.

You haven't a remembered a dream since then?! I hear people say they don't dream, but I think everybody does, they just have trouble remembering; but to go so long since a dream memory is pretty wild to me.

I pretty much just don't think of anything, since I'm in pain when I lay in bed, one day I'll replace the mattress and bottom spring, the last time I did this was in 2006, right now a piece of plywood allows Me to sleep in bed for 5.5-6 hours a night, I'd have to take pain pills before going to bed to sleep longer in bed. I already have a stiff back, but that has existed since I was 12yrs old, that was after I grew from about 4'6" tall(age 11yrs) to almost 5'11", that was a painful year...

Sounds like the pain is causing the problem with your brain allowing you to recall dreams. It's busy doing other things. I'm sorry you have to deal with that.

A lot of my dreams are lucid, but there's also the scary frustration with not being able to wake up!

That happens to me often. Sometimes I can even redirect the dream away from an unpleasant storyline when I lay back down. But I usually don't remember the specifics of a dream for long after I am fully awake.

In my youth I had a couple of recurring themes in my dreams, but have not experienced them for many years. They were not bad enough to call nightmares, but they were not very pleasant, either. I don't miss them at all.

I didn't have anything other than orange juice to produce a wild dream the other night: I was a passenger in a van on a rainy desolate highway, and not a double rainbow, not a triple or quadruple rainbow, but a quintuple rainbow formed, and then a super vivid one appeared in just red and blue. The driver of the van said it was probably from outer space. Just then I woke up. Darn it. :-(
