Has even Microsoft given up on their own cash-cow OS?... 'We love Linux' purrs Microsoft as Red Hat, Azure go on honeymoon ... Embrace, extend ... something else beginning with 'e'... Penguinistas can now run Red Hat Enterprise Linux instances on Microsoft's Azure cloud. "Both Microsoft and I love Linux, and just days after Valentine's Day, I am ecstatic to showcase this love with several new announcements to provide you with even more open choice and flexibility for your cloud deployments on Azure," said Corey Sanders, director of program management on Azure... "Rumor has it" that Microsoft now makes more money from their patents extortion racket against Android and from running Linux than from their own OS... Is there a fourth "E" of extortion to add to their assumed Extend-Embrace-Extinguish??... All just merely my own personal prejudices as ever! IT is what we allow it to be... And for another interesting twist: Microsoft wants you, yes you, to write bits of Windows 10. For free ... You read that right: Microsoft wants community code to end up in the Universal Windows Platform, the runtime that makes it possible for apps to run in Windows 10 on a PC or phone. In return, you get a very fine JavaScript engine to pop into your own programs, should you feel the need to do so. “We believe that developing in the open will allow the team to collaborate even more deeply with more developers around the world, resulting in better products for everyone,†enthuses Seth. Is he right? Open source is a wonderful thing, but it's often represented as the antithesis of Microsoft's approach... The questionnaire at the end of that article is rather telling... Is this a new form of Ballmer Cancer?... Can Free-Libre-Open-Source be virtuous enough to be for the good of all regardless of the credentials of the instigator?... IT is what we allow it to be... Here is an oddly presented news piece for offering a desktop alternative for one part of the USA: System 76 in Denver shows how easy it is to use Ubuntu Linux computers Ubuntu, often overlooked, can be a better alternative to Windows computers ... Point and click. Drag and drop. Look familiar? For most consumers, it's not. This is Ubuntu, a user-friendly version of the Linux operating system... ... Marshall typically helps customers who have gotten past the belief that Linux is for geeks. This version of Linux (there are hundreds) was built by United Kingdom's Canonical and is meant to appeal to everyone — even Windows users. "Ubuntu is faster, it's safer to use, and it's easy to learn," said Marshall, consumer account manager for System 76, a Denver seller of Ubuntu machines. "If you are thinking of switching and don't want to pay the Windows tax and are sick of viruses, don't be afraid to make the switch because there are people who are here to help you, especially here at System 76, and we are local."... ... about a dozen computers are on display for people to check out and test. ("We'd love to have them visit," Marshall said.) The company, which employs 13, has seen an increase in sales in recent years, especially to senior citizens. Free lifetime support is hard to beat. Ubuntu is often overlooked as an option because you won't find these machines at mainstream electronics stores like Best Buy. Is the technology meant for people who normally buy Windows? "Absolutely,"... So. top marks for being able to buy a Linux distro pre-installed on new computer hardware. That is a good article and quite interesting for what I see as the reporter stumbles over a few Windows-isms, old myths, and fright/prejudice/fear. Assuming only ever having experienced Windows since childhood, that is a very good article to enthuse about a first-time experience of a local shop selling Linux systems to people in the street. (Don't tell Microsoft or Apple! :-P ) IT is what we allow it to be... Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

Pray tell... What new foolishness is this? A new pan-dimensional Redmond Blue-Screen-of-Death and Malware?... Windows 10 debuts Blue QR Code of Death – and why malware will love it Interesting idea but we can imagine the downside... ... We'll wait to see where Redmond's engineers take this. ® The "QR" code is an interesting idea. The completely unguarded possibilities are bound to be exploited by others other than just Redmond... And for something of an unexpected development: The truth comes out: Microsoft needs Linux The rumors are true. Microsoft is bringing Ubuntu to Windows. Sort of... ... "The native availability of a full Ubuntu environment on Windows, without virtualization or emulation, is a milestone that defies convention and a gateway to fascinatingly unfamiliar territory. In our journey to bring free software to the widest possible audience, this is not a moment we could have predicted. Nevertheless we are delighted to stand behind Ubuntu for Windows, committed to addressing the needs of Windows developers exploring Linux in this amazing new way..." ... We've already seen the following happen: Microsoft bringing MsSQL to Linux Wim Coekaerts, the man who turned Oracle into a Linux powerhouse, moving to Microsoft Microsoft embracing Linux on its Azure cloud Microsoft investing in Linux projects And now, Microsoft brings Bash to Windows. The juggernaut has finally realized where the future lies...and it is not in the desktop platform. The future is the cloud, SaaS, and virtualization. The future is big data, and massive databases. The future is Linux and Microsoft knows this... Steady FLOSS patience and continuing excellence... IT is what we make it... And for something of an unexpected development: Yep. Microsoft Insider fast-ring build 14316 introduces an initial beta version of UoW (Ubuntu on Windows). It is still somewhat buggy, and is text only (runs in a command prompt). But it should be much improved by the time it enters general release (currently planned for the Anniversary update this summer), though it is likely going to remain text only. In days of long-ago, I had some experience with UNIX on what (at the time) were known as 'super-minis'. Then, 16 years ago, shortly after making THIS account here and joining KWSN, I decided to give Linux a try. I started with Debian, quickly went from Stable to Unstable (Sid). Loved it. The only reasons since then I have run Windoze was either work (bloody, short-sighted Windoze-only shops), or games (game developers develop for the installed user base (Windoze) -- people would not install Linux since there were not very many big-name, popular games written for it/ported to it, and the developers wouldn't write for it/port to it much since people wouldn't install it -- grrr). Ah, the joys of the 'legal' monopoly enforced through the police power of the Govt... Well, finally, things seem to be turning around for Linux. I wish that M$ would see some light and take Apple's route and implement their GUI/operating environment on top of a *nix userland & OS on top of a real kernel, not the buggy P.O.S. insecure crap that is the Windoze kernel. Or, alternately, let us place a GUI/Operating Environment/userland/OS of our choice on top of the Windoze kernel. Anything *nix is better than anything Windoze. One exception I have with what you posted is the bit about SaaS. I have grave misgivings about Software as a Service. Another quote from the article you linked that I find somewhat appropriate:
Keep preaching the Free and Open-Source Software word, brother! |

Would Linus Torvalds have the guts? or the money? If Linus were in the cloud hosting business then you might have a point. Where's Apple, Amazon, Google, Oracle and the other big cloud businesses? I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ... |

More importantly, are you going to form or join a group to defend your freedoms? Why interesting you asked. I was a plaintiff in a group suing the United States Attorney General, Ashcroft, for first amendment freedoms based on regulations he promulgated. We won several motions and likely would have won the case, but Congress rendered the suit moot by changing the law his regulations were based upon, and the AG changed the regulations. There were a couple more rounds but they finally changed things again so it was no longer unconstitutional. The censor pig Mitch McConnell was watching how we were winning and then blocking those paths. Also I'm likely the only person you will ever come into contact with who has paid an attorney specializing in criminal first amendment cases for services rendered, oh that was on a different matter than the above. Now Martin, have you ever painted a target on yourself? giving your name to the government while you protest and saying come get me? |

... have you ever painted a target on yourself? giving your name to the government while you protest and saying come get me? And that is the danger and stifling oppression of unfettered surveillance and unfettered intrusion/coercion... Note that we are victim to that from the very latest in the trickery of (intrusive) Marketing and business-with-no-morals. In some ways, in more pervasive ways than the often blunt actions of "police states" and dictators... How soon for the next crusade or revolution from the preyed-upon revolting citizens? Here is the latest push from Microsoft: Microsoft's Windows 10 nagware goes FULL SCREEN in final push Meet the new BSoD – the Blue Screen of Despair As the Windows 10 free upgrade period draws to a close, Microsoft is stepping up its operating system's nagware to full-screen takeovers. The Redmond software giant confirmed today it will start showing dark blue screens urging people to install the latest version of Windows. The full-screen ads will pop up... 'UpgradeSubscription.exe' File In Preview Build Hints At Windows 10 Subscriptions ... Here is the latest push from Microsoft: They also appear to be getting a little more active than that, actually starting the upgrade process in some cases.
Well, duh.... That has been their aim from the BEGINNING of the Windows 10 episode (actually, well before it). They have publicly said so. They have already partially done it to Office (office 365 is subscription, though other versions of office are still traditional but who knows how long they will last)... 'doze is next. On the brighter (or darker side, depending on your point of view), Microsoft appears to be embracing Linux with surprising speed. With the 'anniversary' update to Windows 10, (coming at the end of the free upgrade period on Aug. 2nd), they are adding the bash shell to Windows 10 as a feature. If you have been keeping up, they have been adding Linux functionality in other places too, most notably in some of their programming-related products. Visual Studio is/has been getting quite a number of cross-platform options, and Code (the Visual Studio IDE only, no compliers) has a version available for Linux (one for Apple's OSX too). A lot of what Microsoft is doing bears some watching. Are they finally 'being nice'? Or are they (much more likely) getting ready for yet another round of 'embrace and extend' that they are quite (in)famous for down over the years... I don't know for sure... But I do NOT trust them. https://youtu.be/iY57ErBkFFE #Texit Don't blame me, I voted for Johnson(L) in 2016. Truth is dangerous... especially when it challenges those in power. |

I find it very strange that MS are adding yet another shell. In this case Bourne Again Shell. Why? One thing is perhaps that you can use Open Source code to compile natively to Windows. But it's far easier to use cross compilers or virtual machines with whatever OS you want and that already have existed for decades. SETI@Home does it already:) |

Here is an announcement from Microsoft Build you probably didn’t see coming: Microsoft today announced that it is bringing the GNU project’s Bash shell to Windows. Bash (Bourne Again SHell) has long been a standard on OS X and many Linux distribution systems, while the default terminal for developers on Windows is Microsoft’s own PowerShell. https://techcrunch.com/2016/03/30/be-very-afraid-hell-has-frozen-over-bash-is-coming-to-windows-10/ Yep... hell HAS frozen over. I went ahead and upgraded our two Windows computers to 10 a month or so ago, and didn't have any issues at all with the process. I was very pleasantly surprised. As to the nefarious ulterior motives of Microsoft, I don't worry about that aspect of it. My Macintosh computer continues to get updates to it's OS, too, but I don't hear much concern over Apple's way of doing things. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |
