but when you consider their adult christen parents might visit the site as well,

You mean to protect adult christen parents?

Will someone please define the term "christen" parents?

I'm pretty sure "christen" is a misspelling of Christian.

As for defining "Christian parents," I think if you asked
a dozen different people, you'd get a dozen different definitions.

One was convicted of child abuse, that one was from Utah.

Ok, I made a bo bo and the word is christian. I am dealing with a birth defect that is considered by some to be immoral. There are cases of children being punished so we need to make the website as clean as possible not so much for the parents but for the welfare of the children. If we get the parents there, we don't want the reading a foul post and deciding they were right after all. As for a script to correct the language, there already exist something like that in the software. The site is run on a much more current version of the same software running on this web site. The problem is the dirty word filter isn't smart enough to eliminate all the creative ways dirty language can be used such as f_o_u_l w_o_r_d. Other problems is personal attacks and some special issue to prevent self harm. It takes a crew of moderators to read through the posts and there are still people who aren't moderators who hit the report to moderator button that appears on each post.

Sounds like you are doing a tough job for a good cause. I also know how hard it is to shift mental gears like that. You get no grief from me, Dena.

I especially like the cat's expression. It says either "Yes, I really am an airline captain" or "You have three seconds to get this crap off of me before I shred your face. Two, one..."

LANGUAGE, LANGUAGE, where is that moderator log???

Because we have children as young as 13 years of age on the site, the language must be squeaky clean

If the word you're worried about is the one between this and off, all I can tell you is that I work in a high school and not only can students say that word to teachers, the teachers can also say it to the students.

The web site just came off the white list and we have no desire for it to return to it. The site needs to be truly child safe so I feel like the language police. I am aware that children know most of that language already but when you consider their adult christen parents might visit the site as well, we need to keep it as clean as possible. It's just better not to let it get dirty in the first place because digging out old threads and cleaning them up is a real task. In some cases it might just be better to delete the thread.

Are we Setizens supposed to adapt to christian "moral"?
No way!!!!!

The "movement" Moral Majority from the 80's comes to mind:(

I think most of us are already aware of what is acceptable/not acceptable around here. What I find unacceptable is a third party telling me that when posting I should take their personal beliefs and easily offended sensabilities into account.

A big massive "bollocks to that" from me.

What happened was someone only quoted half of Dena's post, she replied, so it then seemed as though she was talking about SETI@Home

She was not.

Ops, wrong web site. As you may have guested, I was drafted last Sunday after 3 1/2 months on the other web site and 1,500 post. The truth is they have been interested in me as a moderator for about two months and I turned them down twice. It turned out they needed 4 moderators and the United States was where they were hurting the most.

Because we have children as young as 13 years of age on the site, the language must be squeaky clean, subject matter has different rules and pictures are carefully monitored. Today I worked through two violations documenting everything. Being a moderator is a real pain but somebody needs to do it. We have about 6 ranks of moderators and I am second from the top in rank,

I was looking over past reports and some days they write up as many as 10 people a day. With an active membership of 750 a month and registered users around 20,000 it can be a very busy site.

The most amazing thing is the entire web site is run on less than $40,000 a year but there is a small group of people doing all the grunt work in their spare time.

As for the number of people we help, I don't know but at any given time we have 75-90 users logged in and about 5 times that many reviewing the contents of the web site but unwilling to become a registered users. Every so often one of the guest users will become a registered user and tell us how much the information helped them. We must be doing something right.

Nope, I've got jan on ignore and with his constant replying to everything everyone posts I haven't a clue who is saying what. Annoying to say the least.

Yes, but she responded to my fairly mild word as though she were a mod here. This site is not the one where she is a mod. If she doesn't like the language here, she should red-X it and let the actual mods deal with it.

Speaking of raccoons,

I will be getting a raccoon trap from Animal Control tomorrow in
order to trap and relocate (one of) my nighttime intruder(s). For
the past few nights I've been getting no sleep thanks to one smart
and persistent little fella who comes into my bedroom looking for
cat food, once all available food is gone from the dining room and
kitchen.

(Some time back I quit leaving cat food out in the dining room
over night, hoping the raccoons would go away. Instead, I put two
large bowls of cat food in my bedroom so the cats could have
something to eat.)

This guy will come into my bedroom anywhere from midnight to seven
o'clock in the morning looking for food. My dog - Buddy the chihuahua -
will hear him crunching on the cat food and start barking, which wakes
me up, of course. The raccoon will run away, but he'll come back in
about 15 or 20 minutes to try again. This goes on until I, finally,
get out of bed and put some food outside. Once I've done that I don't
hear from him again that night.***

I love the little guy, but I need to get on a normal* sleep schedule.
At this point I'm up all night and sleeping all day. I'm also trying
to feed my cats a better quality of food, which is more expensive than
the cheap crap, and I don't want to "feed the raccoons" the more
expensive cat food. I wouldn't mind if I had money to burn, but I don't.
(Come on Publisher's Clearing House!!!)

So I'll probably trap the poor little guy tomorrow night by leaving the
baited** trap just inside my bedroom. It'll break my heart, but it's
him or me!

I'll take pictures.

--

*I realize that normal is different for everyone. Personally,
I just want to sleep and night and be active during the day.

**I'll use lemon creme cookies because the cats don't like those, but
the raccoons do.

***It occurred to me, after rereading this post, that this raccoon
has me very well trained. :-/
