Message 1704378 - Posted: 23 Jul 2015, 21:06:35 UTC

Since when did BOINC stop showing the application name that's starting a task?
E.g. 23/07/2015 22:55:04 | SETI@home | [cpu_sched] Restarting task 20fe12ab.26162.14791.438086664206.12.122_2 using setiathome_v7 version 703 (opencl_ati5_cat132) in slot 0

Why doesn't it show the actual application used (MB7_win_x86_SSE2_OpenCL_ATi_HD5_r2929.exe in this case), has it ever done that (I cannot remember), and if it has done it in the past, anyone know when it changed and why? Has this something to do with the 'User friendly names'?

Well my trusty old modified 6.10.58 doesn't even display the plan class there:

Apollo

4048 SETI@home 24/07/2015 6:44:50 AM Starting task 28my15ab.10264.23789.438086664205.12.137_1 using setiathome_v7 version 700

not that the name of the exe I manually put in there matters to me personally, but could be a useful feature request.

It's a bit easier if it showed somewhere in BOINC Manager, than that I have to go look in the programdata\BOINC\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu\ directory between a lot of stuff I haven't deleted in almost ever.

It doesn't even say it in the properties of the running task.
Maybe because of the anon platform? Anyone around with stock application that can check what it says for them?

Edit: if it is user-friendly app names, it's been here since 5.8.2, yikes!

True that, I do switch applications pretty much like changing my socks.

Anon platform here too, but I expect it's more or less identical.

Will have a look at the code a bit later to confirm if it uses the friendly name there at all.

[Edit:] no sign of the user friendly name, in app_start.cpp ACTIVE_TASK::resume_or_start(), AFAICT, but would have to thoroughly check which codebase I'm looking at (as I have a few)

I've asked David (also through alpha email list) if we can have the true application name in the properties of the running task.

I don't mind nosing in directories, but can understand that not everyone dares doing that. And especially on a day such as today, with new Lunatics applications, it's a good idea to see somewhere in BOINC which application it was using already. To then decide if you want to update.

In the mean time, anyone with the stock applications running on a post-5.8.2 BOINC, let us hear from you. :)

My T7400 still runs stock, but the only time it's been operational lately was during the truncated Stderr testing. Here's some event log samples from my archives:

BOINC client version 7.2.42 for windows_x86_64
14-Oct-2014 08:06:50 [SETI@home] Starting task 19mr14aa.26912.5384.438086664200.12.19_1

BOINC client version 7.6.2 for windows_x86_64
11-Jul-2015 20:18:09 [SETI@home] Starting task 31ja15aa.1364.13319.438086664201.12.97_1

BOINC client version 7.6.6 for windows_x86_64
14-Jul-2015 20:06:05 [SETI@home] Starting task 02jn15ag.19205.7189.438086664199.12.19_0

No changes over that span that I can see.

EDIT: Found an earlier one, too.

BOINC client version 7.2.33 for windows_x86_64
24-Feb-2014 18:51:24 [SETI@home] Starting task 25no13aa.13535.171373.438086664199.12.8_1 using setiathome_v7 version 700 (cuda42) in slot 12

...which also demonstrates why I stopped updating my other hosts after 7.2.33. No need for <cpu_sched> to add another line to the log just to get the slot numbers.

Ha thanks. I suppose that clears that up. :)

Also, the thing that Richard wrote on the alpha email list. Hope he doesn't mind me cutting & pasting.
Our Honoured Lord Richard Haselgrove XVII wrote:
I think this one is another of the long-standing ambiguities in BOINC terminology.

For BOINC, the 'Application' is the general classification of the work being undertaken: Taking http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/apps.php as an example:

SETI has precisely two BOINC applications - SETI@Home v7, and AstroPulse v7.

But it has something like 59 executable binaries (across all platforms). Some computer users would call these 'Applications', too.

There are occasions when it can be useful to know exactly which executable binary has been chosen to process a task for a particular BOINC application.

David added it to the source code for: Manager: show executable filename in task properties.

Thanks for the support Richard and Jacob.
