Here are some excerpts from the breaking story: A Russian billionaire announced Monday he has committed $100 million to a 10-year international effort led by UC Berkeley astronomers to seek messages from advanced civilizations on planets throughout the Milky Way and galaxies far beyond. The project is by far the most ambitious and costly endeavor in what is known as SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. Astronomers around the world have worked part time at finding signs of intelligent life in space for years with only limited funds — except at Berkeley, where the university has created a major SETI project at its Space Science Laboratory atop the campus. The astronomers and engineers there are seeking signals from extraterrestrials, using radio telescopes from Puerto Rico to Hawaii. Nine million amateur enthusiasts worldwide have programmed their computers to scan the radio spectrum for possible signals in a Berkeley-based program called SETI@home. Until now, funding for the SETI efforts — aside from UC Berkeley’s — has been estimated at barely $2.5 million a year, with money dribbling in from small research grants by private foundations. Dan Werthimer, an engineer and astrophysicist who leads the SETI@home project, called Milner’s commitment “a spectacular decision that’s far beyond our wildest dreams.†Full Story Here Looks like Eric is happy! |

I am rather dubious about the nine million users figure. I think registered SETI users are about one million, of which about 7% participate.Where are the others? Tullio |

But with all this publicity, dont you think new users will start flocking in? Hoping to get in on the ground floor? [/quote] Old James |

I know that. But with all this publicity, dont you think new users will start flocking in? Hoping to get in on the ground floor? I have started running SETI@home in 2004 and am still doing it.But 7% is a low figure. May people just register, try it for a while, and then leave, maybe for projects giving them more credits. I am running 6 BOINC projects on my 3 computers, two Linux boxes and one Windows 8.1 PC running CPDN, vLHC@home and ATLAS@home. The latter two use VirtualBox. I am not interested in credits. Tullio |

I agree. Most BOINC message boards are just dull. Tullio |

I know that. But with all this publicity, don't you think new users will start flocking in? Hoping to get in on the ground floor? A, Yes for now. Quite frankly it rivals any of the social networking sites like Twitter or Facebook A. This may be the key to any expanded future. edit: The way we react to each other in the social forms may be key to enticing more public participation. |

I agree. Most BOINC message boards are just dull. They don't have mother hens like we do at Seti! |

Seti@home is searching for something esoteric that may not even exist. Well put. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

JWST is an infrared telescope. The optical telescope at Lick Observatory will be used to scan the sky for possible optical messages, such as laser beams. Tullio |
