So yesterday I had to rebuild Pluto as I managed to break something (un BOINC-related). I thought the backend would either - as in the past when I've had to do this - pick up that it was the same machine or allow me to merge the two instances of the host.

Not today.

What I'm being told is:

Processing pluto.local
Can't merge host 7423311 into 7587350 - they're incompatible

Incompatible? They're literally the same computer with the same version of the OS...

The LAN IP address may have changed due to DHCP but that's about it.

Thoughts?

Are you sure you're picking the right machines (you gots so many to choose from! :-)? Neither accounts were created yesterday: 7587350 is dated 29 May 2015, 7423311 stems from 2 Nov 2014. AFAICT none of your machines were inaugurated yesterday, so it must have already picked up an earlier incarnation (like my SNAFU with rm -rf * the other day).

Actually this one was created yesterday

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=7616907

However as it is the only one in the list with 2 Geforce 8800GT's it look like it may have assumed the old identity.

I'm not at a computer at the moment but I'm pretty sure they are the machine(s) I'm on about. More investigation, then, when I get home.

The one with the 2 x 8800 is a proper new machine I set up. An older MacPro with an nVidia GT 120 and an 8800 GT (BOINC always reports the newest card as being all cards, it seems)

OK, so colour me confused.

All I did was format the hard disk and re-install the OS and BOINC (I should have kept the BOINC folders with the work in progress but I rushed. They'll get put back into the pot eventually when they time out).

Here are the 2 Plutos:

They're showing as the same

Here's 7423311, the 'original', from when I first set the computer to crunching in November 2014:

Here's 7587350, created not on the 29th May but yesterday (11th July '15), honestly! Unless there's something else going on.

The "something else going on" which may be relevant is that I did notice a while back (possibly even the 29th May, I have no way of knowing for sure) that 3 of my hosts (Venus, Mars and indeed, Pluto) got confused and created a split personality (second host entry of the same name) when I switched them to temporarily use their Wi-Fi interface rather than the Ethernet interface for a short while, as I needed to run them away from switch access. This was easily resolved by merging the hosts by name, which at the time, worked.

Anyway, being the same host it'd be convenient to have the 2 versions combined. But if it's not, it's hardly the end of the world, it's just confusing as to how it happened and I like solving problems if I can.

Can you merge hosts when both have active Tasks, or must you wait until one has no Tasks on it? ISTR that that was a problem for some folks trying to merge hosts after a glitch like this.......

You have to wait until a host has no tasks in its task list anymore before you can delete it. Merging has no such restrictions.
