If Gary Johnson carries one state then he qualifies as a candidate to be chosen from IF the election goes to the House of representatives. Johnson is a former republican and is more popular with many house republicans than Donald Trump. I'm not saying that he would win but under those circumstances it is possible.

Might even be a bit likely as he knows how to politic in the halls of that building. Also both parties could agree to disagree and use him as a total block on the other party. 4 years of nothing at all happening.

Bingo... as long as Johnson can win enough states to put him in the top 3 in the electoral college... likely just 1 State... It IS a possibility (but still kinda remote) for the reason you mentioned.
