on the Amtrak back from PA, met a reporter. Said she was a Democrat that will vote for Trump. Why? Because nothing has really changed for the common person in 8 years and we just need some sort of change.

I'll agree with that reporter, that the US does need a change, but that I don't see Trump as the answer, he's much too dangerous.

...and don't underestimate the power of that belief. Its what caused the UK to vote for Brexit.

Running into the same responses. From people who have never voted, or never admitted to voting, for a Republican. Including former colleagues in Liberal Academia.

What sort of change for the good is Trump going to bring?

Sorry, but if you think any of them even come close to a socialist besides a small number such as Sanders or Warren, then you wouldn't know a socialist if a socialist jumped up and bit you on the nose. Obama has been a pro-corporatist neo-liberal and the only changes have been (pretty much):

1) More drone strikes.
2) Further reduction of our liberties as begun by Bush era Patriot Act,
3) Social issue: gay marriage. Less discrimination is nice, but by far not the most important issue.
4) Health care. Do noy forget Emergency Medical Treatment & Labor Act (EMTALA), which passed under Reagan. This meant you had to put your taxes to paying for emergency treatment of those who could not afford it. You want to go back to letting your taxes go to that? As I understand it, ACA strongly influenced by an idea of Nixon, the right-wing think tank CATO Institute and Mitt Romney. Did not push for a more leftist approach to health care reform even though Dems had a majority in both the House and Senate.

And in all this time, the biggest issue has veen barely touched. The very source of our livelihoods. Main Street Economy still sucks Wage stagnation and I'm not just talking about minimum wage. Wall Street usually doing fine. They took the biggest risks and got bailed out. Several them made money by betting on us failing. Offer a sub-prime mortgage that the buyer should have known better than to sign up for, but would never have even had the chance if not offered. Speculators betting on mortgage defaults and winning. Bail out (started under Bush and continued under Obama) money going to bonuses for CEOs. And how many went to jail? Maybe one? Bernie Made-off.

If you can't tell me why my points are wrong ...
If you can't tell me wby the points I've raised of a reasonable summary of the Obama era are basically left when I say it is center-right, pro-corporatist, somewhat hawkish neo-liberal ... .

And don't forget, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was Bill Clinton's first act (less discrimination, again, nice), but he was elected on "It's the Economy, Stupid". So was Obama. It hasn't helped. Hillary Clinton would be as bad or worse. But there's NO reason to believe The Donald when he says "I hate tp say it, but I used to be one of The Establishment. but I've switched" and that he's really going to help.
Capitalize on this good fortune, one word can bring you round ... changes.

Well, the bailouts under Drumpf wouldn't go to the car companies and banks, they would go to real estate developers who got hurt by the inflated bubble property values going down.

As to EMTALA and PPACA, you are suggesting that Obama cut spending?! Sounds like the man is a trickle down republican!

What worries me about Drumpf is he is so stupid he well could so upset the military that the USA would have its first coup.

As to those mandated by law subprime loans ... look up the CRA.

It is the economy. The last time we were in full blown expansion the USA had a project that it was working on. RFK put them on that project. Shooting for a science goal that you aren't quite sure you can do is a fantastic motivation.

Another very stupid Democrat being reported by the stupid media:

Jeb Bush's top adviser, Sally Bradshaw, has left the Republican Party to become an independent, and says if the presidential race in Florida is close, she'll vote for Hillary Clinton.

Bradshaw, who's been close to the former Florida governor for decades and was senior adviser to his 2016 campaign, officially switched her registration to unaffiliated. She told CNN's Jamie Gangel in an email interview that the GOP is "at a crossroads and have nominated a total narcissist -- a misogynist -- a bigot."

"This is a time when country has to take priority over political parties. Donald Trump cannot be elected president," Bradshaw said.

Who will stop the stupid Left and their ...ist attacks on Drumpf?
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...

Angry Old White Imbeciles are on the verge of having a final Death Blow Stroke,
thinking that a Female could become POTUS.
The same AOWIs blame their mother's for everything that went wrong in their lives.
Their Mothers smoked, their Mothers didn't satisfy their Fathers,
Daddy had to find solace with Hollywood starlets and take junior along for the ride.

For all the Angry Old White Men there is a "Pot of Gold" at the end of the Rainbow. It's called DEATH, and it makes all happy, and you less cranky. A Win Win for all.

I'll do today's poll results, with comparison to last week.

General Election: Trump vs. Clinton
Tuesday August 2 Monday, July 25
Economist/YouGov Clinton 41, Trump 36 Clinton +5	Clinton 40, Trump 38 Clinton +2
NBC News/SM Clinton 50, Trump 42 Clinton +8	Clinton 46, Trump 45 Clinton +1

HuffPost, poll of polls shows Clinton with lead of nearly 6%, double what it was on the 22 July.

edit] On 538 the odds of winning, a few days ago on 30 July showed Trump just ahead, today it shows Clinton 66%, Trump 34%

Perhaps the Time of Day people are polled makes a difference.

Some polls spend the $$$$ to call cell phones, some don't. To include cell phones a human has to dial the number! Those polls that don't include cells will contact more old people who will vote for ...

Hmmn, Khan, read a well written letter that makes one think...

"Dear Mr. Khan,
I want to preface this letter by stating that I respect your son’s sacrifice for this great nation. By all accounts, he is a true hero that sacrificed himself in service to our country. For that I am thankful.

As a veteran, I watched your comments at the Democratic National Convention with a mixture of sadness, and anger. The United States has a military comprised of volunteers. Every single member has made the conscious choice to join the military and serve. There is not a single service member who has been forced into service. It is important for all service members (and apparently, their families) to understand that service to this great nation does not imbue one with special privileges or rights. I found your comments troubling when you said: “Have you ever been to Arlington cemetery? Go look at the graves of brave patriots who died defending the United States of America. You will see all faiths, genders and ethnicities. You have sacrificed nothing and no one.”

Does it matter whether Mr. Trump has sacrificed “…nothing and no one?”…has Ms. Clinton “..sacrificed” for this nation? How about Mr. Obama? Your comment stating that Mr. Trump “…has sacrifice no one” is alarming. Are you intimating that YOU sacrificed? Sir, your son willingly sacrificed himself. As a father I cannot imagine the pain you must feel but his sacrifice is his own. He was not forced to serve.

I am troubled that you would allow a party that has little more than contempt for the US Service Member to parade you into the DNC to denounce Donald Trump. Did you watch when protesters at the DNC booed and heckled Medal of Honor recipient Capt. Florent Groberg? Did you notice your party interrupting the moment of silence for slain police officers? Your own hypocrisy in not denouncing these acts and instead using the DNC as a platform to make a political point is disgraceful. The simple fact is that whether one served or sacrificed does not give greater power to their statements. One vote is as valuable as another. That sir is why our Country is great. Your condemnation of one person for a statement while standing idly as your party disparages veterans and police officers is the height of hypocrisy.

To conflate the need to prevent potential terrorists from entering our country with the belief that ‘all Muslims’ should be banned is simply wrong and disingenuous. As a reminder, Mr Trump said: ” “Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in Jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life,” The irony of your son’s own death at the hands of these very people in Iraq should not be ignored. I have little doubt that your son would have recognized the need to protect our country from these very people. In fact, he held is own troops back so that he could check on a suspicious car. Your son understood sacrifice and how to protect “his people”…’his soldiers’….’his fellow Americans’…

As you continue to make the media circuit and bask in the glow of affection cast upon you by a party that has little regard for your son’s own sacrifice, and veterans in general, I would ask you to consider your comments and your position more closely.
Respectfully,
Chris Mark

"December 7th, 2015, -- Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on."

(source emphasis added)

Drumpf may have shifted his position a little since then, though whether he'd allow Muslims from France or Germany, into the US, as, in his words, they've been "totally compromised" by terrorism, is anybody's guess. He has indicated the vast Muslim population of Scotland would not be barred. If anybody is being disingenuous about Drumpf's ban on Muslims entering the US it's the author of the piece you quoted, not Khan.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...
