Message 1798805 - Posted: 26 Jun 2016, 11:05:26 UTC - in response to Message 1798702.

The New York Times editorial a few days ago:

What is known, what the debate over the [Brexit] referendum has demonstrated with great clarity, is that there is in Britain a populist strain of the sort that has brought nationalist governments to Hungary and Poland, helped right-wing parties make strong showings in France and some other European countries — and, in America, done much to promote the cause of Donald Trump. In the United States and Britain, a relatively normal electoral process became seized with populist nationalism and increasingly immune to normal political discourse.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/20/opinion/nationalism-and-the-brexit-vote.html

My take? The NY Times believes The People are inferior to The Ruling Class, and should not be trusted with making decisions.

How deranged, demeaning and evil that belief is.

The Ruling Class, which The New York Times is just a mouthpiece. Is yelling, screaming and stomping their feet. In fear that their Control may be slipping away.

Hopefully, their fears will be realized.

Quite, couldn't put it better, your "take" on the NYT is "deranged, demeaning and evil".
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...

And we're back at square one :)

Betreger, no disrespect, you're shooting yourself in the foot with this argument.

First though let's take it from Kong's POV (and mine). Cowboys, real cowboys (and other herders), their families, and communities... exist all over the Western world (even Iceland!). And they are all tough SOBs because that's exactly what they have to be. If you and I or anyone else were transplanted into that way of life, no matter what your score on a hypothetic pacifism-scale, the first thing we'd get is a shotgun AND the will to use it. Otherwise you wake up without a herd. It's the same all over the world. And for some reason "intellectual" city-folk who've no idea how to even sow & grow a tomato plant (or worse, know when tomatoes are actually in season) love to talk down to these people. Also the same the world over. However, nowhere in the Western world do these people constitute a majority. Not by a long shot.

Another point here is - irrespective of IQ - the real idiot in this scenario is always the city-boy. Complete lack of disrespect for a whole culture of people and a lot of ignorance as to the logistics involved to get that medium-rare porterhouse on their dinner plate.

But that's not why you are shooting yourself in the foot.

From your point of view cowboys exist in urban areas too. Alright, we're in umbrella-term territory - no problem - I get it. Again the biggest idiots are "the smartest guys in the room". Cowboy royalty lives on Wall Street.

King of the Cowboys 2008?
Hank Paulson.
Bear Stearns? "Yeah, OK."
Lehman Brothers? "I feel like saying no today"

He coulda just said yes and saved half of Europe, the UK from a BREXIT and the US from stressing over TRUMP. Oooops.

Smart people are a very special and, at times, highly dangerous type of idiot.

---

And on a side note:

All you guys going, "OMG, OMG!! Brits vote Brexit! It must have been the idiots! The xenophobes!"
I call double-standard.
Everyone and their dog knows Canada and Australia are awesome countries.
Hopefully they'll have a very stern & enlightening word with some of you about the virtues of level-headed border-control.

Careful there Alex. I brought up logistics many times & got lambasted for being an anarchistic truck driver.

All this free trade, does any of that trade get where it's meant to by the swish of Harry Potter's magic wand?

What makes me laugh atm is Trump & Clinton, over 300,000,000 in the States & that's the best that America can come up with?

You missed the words "level" and "headed".
And for some weird reason pretended you didn't understand my whole point was:

- This year we need doctors but not engineers.
or
- This year we won't be accepting many applications but NEXT year could be an entirely different story.

BTW (and just a heads-up for now):
That AB/youngster post of yours? You came out of that one looking a bit elitist...

I know (and I tried to make it clear in my post that I understood where you're coming from).

And the one point I was trying to make in my reply was: once you broaden the term and take it to the city... it has to include "smart people" too. You can't pick & choose :)
(Quick example: ask anyone outside the States if Dubya qualifies as "a cowboy")

The other point (Hank Paulson) was an example of a highly intelligent cowboy screwing up the world.

One could argue that this very thread is likely a result of Hank's cowboy (arbitrary) decision making :)

Links 1, 2 & 3 have been a problem well before boat arrivals, but the current Liberal/National party government and it's former government under Howard turned a blind eye to this because they support businesses making money from such actions so they take no action to correct this problem.

The fact is that illegals arriving by plane have always greatly out numbered boat arrivals.

Link 4 has been going on for a couple of years down there now by these 2 small groups of people.

Thankfully, as a result those who attend these so called demonstrations, people who wish to cover their faces will now face much harsher penalties (and about time too as only criminals need to do that).

Link 5 again sits squarely with our current government that turned these short term immigration detention centres into long term concentration camps.

Hopefully we'll have a change of government next week that will do something about about 1, 2, 3 & 5.

Those involved with 4 should just be locked up for the criminals that they are.

But still, we're doing much better than yous in the U.S. or Europe.

Cheers.

Don't blame me, I voted for Johnson(L) in 2016.

Truth is dangerous... especially when it challenges those in power.

3 more days Wiggo and the nightmare will be over .

Lets hope the Yanks have seen the light over Brexit and what may happen if Trump wins .

And then there is the one thing none of you have mentioned about Hillary and that is the female voters .

I understand Trump has peed a lot of them off and they do count for 50% of the vote so I wouldn't count Hillary out of the race yet in fact I reckon she has a very good chance of winning if only because of the female voters

Also you have to take into consideration, since ~1980 more women than men have voted in US elections. Why women are far more likely to vote than men
Maybe that’s a little harsh. But the truth is that women vote in higher numbers than men do. We have in every presidential election since 1980, and the gap has widened over time. In 2012, the difference in turnout was nearly 4 percentage points (63.7 percent of ladies voted vs. 59.8 percent of gents). The disparity was more than twice as large if you look just at those who have never been married. Girls, it seems, really do run this world.

The only reason I may vote for Trump is Hillary. I still think she and Donald conspired this who campaign up to guarantee her a victory. I also think they should either formally charge either or both of them before the conventions or drop the investigations.

Like the surprise in Breixt that the young dislike racism and everything that was trotted out by the leave?
