Is Trump a Republican, or is he just using the GOP as a badge? He's tried for the same job as an Independent and a Democrat in the past.

If Trump's politics could be labeled, he would be a Trumpist.

He has only run for President of the United States of America once before, in 2000 as a member of the Reform Party. He pulled out of that race after winning 2 primaries due to an intense personal dislike of some of his fellow Reform Party members. His current run for President as a Republican (2016 election cycle) is only his 2nd attempt.

Trump floats from one political party to another somewhat frequently. He is, in my opinion, almost certainly just using the Republican party as a path to getting on the November 2016 General election ballot, or as you put it, a badge.

His party affiliations are as follows:

19??-1987: Democrat.
1987-1999: Republican.
1999-2001: Reform Party.
2001-2009: Democrat.
2009-2011: Republican.
2011-2012: Independent.
