Agreed. There is no reason to go shooting up a peaceful place of worship.

For those that might be interested here's the history of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, also known as Mother Emanuel, the oldest African-American church in the south. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emanuel_African_Methodist_Episcopal_Church

http://www.nytimes.com/live/updates-on-charleston-church-shooting/gunman-was-quoted-as-saying-i-have-to-do-it/
Sylvia Johnson, one of the Rev. Clementa Pinckney’s cousins, said in an interview with NBC that she had spoken with one of the survivors of the shooting, who gave her this account.

The gunman arrived at the church and asked for the pastor, taking a seat next to him for the study meeting. At the end, the survivor told Ms. Johnson, they suddenly heard loud noises. The gunman had opened fire, and reloaded five times.

“Her son was trying to talk him out of doing the act of killing people,” Ms. Johnson said.

According to Ms. Johnson, the survivor said the gunman replied.

“He just said: ‘I have to do it. You rape our women and you are taking over our country. And you have to go.’ “

The same evil of ISIL, the devil incarnate.

US Flag Code

(m) The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. On Memorial Day the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff. By order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, as a mark of respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half-staff according to Presidential instructions or orders, or in accordance with recognized customs or practices not inconsistent with law. In the event of the death of a present or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, the Governor of that State, territory, or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half-staff. The flag shall be flown at half-staff thirty days from the death of the President or a former President; ten days from the day of death of the Vice President, the Chief Justice or a retired Chief Justice of the United States, or the Speaker of the House of Representatives; from the day of death until interment of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a Secretary of an executive or military department, a former Vice President, or the Governor of a State, territory, or possession; and on the day of death and the following day for a Member of Congress. As used in this subsection -

(1) the term 'half-staff' means the position of the flag when it is one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff;
(2) the term 'executive or military department' means any agency listed under sections 101 and 102 of title 5; and
(3) the term 'Member of Congress' means a Senator, a Representative, a Delegate, or the Resident Commissioner from Puerto Rico.

Technically a state governor has no authority to order the US flag to half staff but they do.......

The use of the US flag as a symbol of grief (or respect) for virtually any "local" crime has reduced the meaning of having the flag flown at half staff.

The Confederate Flag should not be lowered - its not a national - state flag or any type of "official government" flag - its role is merely historical now......

Now we hear over here that Dylann Roof was given the .45 caliber handgun by his father as a 21st present and neither parent checked his facebook page.

What utter stupidity. :-O

The above quote from the U.S. Flag Code that you presented proves that this statement is false.

The use of the US flag as a symbol of grief (or respect) for virtually any "local" crime has reduced the meaning of having the flag flown at half staff.

If you called what happened a "local" crime incident, then you definitely, absolutely have your priorities wrong. This was a case of domestic terrorism plan and simple, just as was in all of the cases of mass murder over the last several years. I won't even mention the fact that a state senator, who just happened to be the senior pastor of Mother Emanuel, was one of the victims in this heinous "local" crime. So Governor Hailey was fully authorized in ordering the flags at half staff.

The Confederate Flag should not be lowered - its not a national - state flag or any type of "official government" flag - its role is merely historical now......

The South Carolina Infantry Battle Flag of the Confederate States of America [the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia (General Robert E. Lee's Army)] has flown on the State House dome since 1962, and has been protected by state law since then. It has been lowered on other occasions, usually at times that promote the confederacy. The flag has more protection than the state flag. Any person who has attempted to raise the issue of removing that flag, while campaigning to run for any office in that state has lost. Every attempt to have the flag removed via laws has been rigorously shot down by the state legislator, with the last such attempt being last year.

Charleston,

The most gentile and racially harmonious city that I know of. Such beautiful and accomplished people have been taken from the community and from the Nation as well. We will be at a loss for it.

Joe Riley, my classmate in both high school and at the Citadel there in Charleston has done such wonders for the city in his 40 years as mayor. He has embraced the black community and has made Charleston proud of them and their accomplishments.

I see Joe on the news now--looking somber, older and fatigued. In his next few months he will heal the city as we all wish him and Charleston peace and harmony in the days ahead.

Apparently you have never noticed the difference between Rupert Murdoch's Opinion, and when the talking head is reading copy from the AP. The AP copy is fair and balanced, mostly, the rest of the time the talking head spews hate propaganda, because it sells advertising. Of course you could try Fact Based, In Depth News

OBW, there is no Peoples Republic of California. There is the Peoples Republic of Santa Monica, and the Peoples Republic of San Francisco and Oakland, but you will find the rest of the state rather solid conservative. Farmers tend to be conservative.

Ob: It now appears as if the perp, who confessed, wanted to start a race war. Last time I heard that it was from Charles Manson's mouth. So now we know just how sick twisted and vile this [redacted] thing is. I'm sure in the coming weeks we will find out how he spent his time on the net visiting hate sites like stormfront and watching hate TV.

I know liberal sounds so similar to libertarian when you pronounce the syllables, but at least *try* to not label so quickly. May I help you extract your foot from your mouth?

Dylann Roof's bond was set at $1 million for the weapons charge, though he wasn't allowed bond on the other charges. Still waiting to see if federal domestic terrorism charges will be brought against him. Unfortunately, I don't see that likely unless they can tie others to him and his actions. I say federal because S.C. is a state the does not have hate crime laws. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/06/19/dylann-roof-family_n_7623252.html

Having grown up not too very far from Charleston I would agree that
modern day Charleston is a pretty special place. Some of the friendliest
people you will ever meet - even if they have never seen you before.

Haven't been there in a while but I'm looking forward to another visit.
Savannah and Charleston are my 2 favorite cities anywhere.........

Charleston will handle this with calm dignity and do the right thing.

The black guy who got shot by the police officer was in N Charleston and
they handled that very well.....so it can be done and Charleston will lead
by example.

Having seen "some" of my posting probably gives you no clue where I am coming from. When we can be moderated here, and when others will put words and beliefs in your mouth and mind on a frequent basis ... .

But, tell you what, you've made up your mind.
So, rather than politely offer, I metaphorically YANK your foot out of your mouth.
