What sort of GPU will you be using with the riser? Some cards will not work with certain risers, other will. So knowing what the GPU cards is first helps I wasn't aware of that. I am planning to get a couple of R9 290/X. I found 3M 8KC3-0726-0500 cables but they are extremely pricey compared to what Amazon has. |

i have two of those 3m risers but i'm not using them now. at some point i will swap the maximus vi extreme with the z97 classified and go back to running three of the 290x the 3m riser isn't very flexible; trying to figure where to put one or two video cards that were dangling in free space was annoying. i can't remember if it worked all of the time, sometimes it would show two cards, other times it would show four cards. so i don't know if that's a pci-e 2.0/3.0 thing. if you were only going to get a couple of 290x, shouldn't you be able to mount them on a motherboard without needing any risers? |

You should probably be looking at a full size PCI-e riser with a solid state capacitor on it like this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-24cm-PCI-E-Express-PCIe-x16-Extender-Cable-Riser-Card-Power-Solid-Capacity-/111360891122 But there is no guarantee that it will work. I tried using one with a GTX 780 and wouldn't work. Don't know why. Lower end cards worked no problem. I won't go with any PCIe 1x riser with high end cards, Hope it helps Zalster Edit.. Thanks for the info. I was worried that these flimsy looking ones might cause trouble with the mobo/GPU. I won't go with any PCIe 1x riser with high end cards I have read on many sites that 1x, 4x or 8x work as good as 16x slots when it comes to computing, so I am a bit confused here. |

For low end cards, 1x, 4x or 8x might be ok I've used a 1x before with a gtx 750, but when I tried with higher end card it wouldn't work. I tired a 16x as well with high end card, but it too wouldn't work as well. Don't know if it has something to do with requirements of the higher end cards. You might get a different result. I ended up opting for a new MoBo |

For low end cards, 1x, 4x or 8x might be ok I just went for the higher end boards, I've got 4 so far, 3 have cases, the 4th doesn't yet, but it will, an X9 for 4 and 5, 1 each of course. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

For low end cards, 1x, 4x or 8x might be ok Again, thanks for the tips. Only my main rig is in a case, the rest are all open bare bone system, subjected to direct flow from the AC outlet. Helps keep them cool in this desert environment. |

For low end cards, 1x, 4x or 8x might be ok I've got a cat, who likes to chew on plastic, so a case is mandatory.. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

Hi all, I've done some searching but everything I've found is several years out-of-date, I was looking for motherboard recommendations that can support at least 6 GPUs. I've found many that have 6 or 7 PCI slots, but all I've seen only appear to support 4 GPUs. Any advice appreciated, thanks. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/07/31/supermicro_2028gr_trt_server_review/ |

These days the main problem is that most new video cards take up 2 slots each at minimum, I've seen cards that take up 1 slot each, but they aren't higher than a GTX970, the PNY GTX970(see pic below) could have the bracket changed out for one that takes up only 1 slot if the card was water cooled or the bracket could be modified if there is no suitable bracket at a place like Performance PCs, maybe, since half the bracket is for air to pass thru and nothing else. SLI motherboards have been providing widely spaced x16 pcie slots for a LONG TIME now. Fitting three cards is not hard, just spend the money on mobo that is DESIGNED to take video cards. |
