I started doing BOINC a couple of years ago.
I didn't do any config files, just clicking the Tools - Computing preferences
Something came up and I was permitted to improve my graphics card FROM a GT 630
to a GT 740. For some reason it doesn't look like my daily credits has changed much atall from the time I was using the GT630.
Am I missing some 'learning' here??
Should I have expected to see an uptick in the daily credits with the new card??

basic PC info,
decent everyday PC,
amd FX4300
8 giggles ram,
the GT740 is a 2 giggle ram card
I don't seem to have the .xml files mentioned in some of the message threads I have read so far.

My error???

Not really familiar with the gt 740.

I think someone said it's a rebranded 630 but with more cuda and overclocked some.

So if that's true, then probably not going to see a while lot of improvement over the 630 while only using standard applications.

Most of the gains in GPU come with running more than 1 work unit per card and tweaking the mbcua.cfg file and/if we get APs the command code there.

First step would be see if you can run 2 work unit's per card. That is going to require you making a app_config.xml

I'm going to link you to another thread where they discuss making one and into which folder to place it to try and get more work out of your GPU. Even though it's about the gtx 650, you can still use the same steps to create that file.

Doubtful: http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GT-740-vs-GeForce-GT-630.

I wonder if it has to do with it switching between getting CUDA32 work and CUDA42 work. The latter is processed much faster, so he is probably better off with adding the Lunatics applications by hand and set it to use CUDA42 only.

Probably due to getting "wrong" types of work - after changing GPU the server quite often sends out a series of WU for each CUDA type.

(and whoever said the '730 is a re-badged '630 got it wrong, they are different beasts)

Tanks all, so far, I have captured these replies, plus my query,
I have downloaded from the Lunatics sources

ap7_win_x64_sse3_cpu_r2692_vc10_pgoed
and
AP7_win_x86_SSE2_OpenCL_NV_r2721

AND visited the

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=77398

and hoovered that information.

What learning I did before getting the newer video card all suggested that it wasn't a rebranded lesser model card this time.

Whereas the GT630 was rebranded from the 400 series of cards.
(a dirty marketing stradigy)

I will have time to study all the txt files next week.
Hopefully yee Ol brain can abbysorb the information and I will attempt to follow the directions to see if this PC can work a bit better, I did expect it to after the minor upgrade.

I did see in the 'tasks' list for the pieces I am to process and the GPU tasks were all (cuda42) at this time. Can't recall yesterdays or any recent previous work.
Ok, it turns out up until yesterday the 29th, there was a mix of cuda32 and cuda42 work being processed. Not sure the effects of that on the performance.

If you want to go 'optimized' get:
Lunatics Installer v0.43a (which have all the apps inside, creates app_info.xml)
http://lunatics.kwsn.info/index.php?module=Downloads;catd=9

Read the thread linked at 'Message 1596404'
https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=71867&postid=1596404#1596404

After you become familiar how 'things' work - you may then get some newer apps and 'install' them manually by editing app_info.xml
