I was sadly informed by James Sotherden earlier this week that another of my favorite personalities had passed away about a month ago and I was taken aback, because I was unaware of it.

So, now that I have the time, I wish to post a few bits by Stan that I have enjoyed over the years.
If you have anything to add, please do so.

I have posted this bit more than once for Thanksgiving.
Stan was a man who did his humor before PC became the word of the day.
You could make a joke and not be considered a flaming racist.
Sucks that things have changed and everything one says gets put under a PC microscope.

And the 'Take an Indian to Lunch' bit was just one cut from what I consider my favorite and one of his most creative endeavors.
Stan Freberg Presents the United States of America.

Wonderfully recorded, conceived and written by Stan, and utilizing some of the most wonderful voice actors of the time.
Great parodies on early moments in the history of the United States.
The one-liners and plays on words are still priceless.
"What was that? French horns"
It is just as entertaining and amusing as it was over 50 years ago.

This was released in '61.
I bought a re-released copy on vinyl many years later.

Trust me, a full listen of the USA album is well worth the time.
And I would suggest getting a CD copy of it to really appreciate how well it was recorded.

It is available on Amazon, along with some releases of lot of his other old material.

Mark, Thank you for posting a link to Stan Freberg. I have listend to some old favorites and found many new ones I had not heard before.
And that was just your first link. It will take some time to peruse the others.

Stan was the Man back in the day.

/rant on/ Like Mark said, before the PC "police" severely "cleansed" just about everything on radio & TV there was absolutely nothing wrong with Stan's type of comedy/humor and IMO there still is NOTHING wrong with it when taken in the correct context. /rant off/

You are most welcome.
Stan was a very prolific man, and I have enjoyed his bits for a long time.
And was very opposed to the Vietnam war.............Amen, Stan.
This is very dry humor, but the war was dragging on at that time, and SOMEBODY had to make the point.

What we don't learn, we are doomed to repeat. And it seems we have not.

What it all boiled down to, and Stan knew this, was the VN conflict was by that point, nothing but media coverage of the 'event'.
Body counts, not politics.
The point he was making is that the media had so desensitized us by that point, that another dozen or so of our boys dying each day was seemingly insignificant to some.
Unless it happened to be YOUR son or daughter who's life was surrendered to the cause.

I had no young sons or daughters who's lives were lost in that conflict.

But, I can attest to the fact that I sent out many prayers for those who did.

Some of you vets may think that my sitting it out is a cheap shot.
It was not. The simple fact was, I was not called up. Just fell between the numbers, or I might not be talking to you at this time. I am not sure why or how. I did absolutely nothing to avoid service.
I do not know why I was not called upon.
Was there a special thing about 1/18/1957? My birth date?
Don't know. I really don't.
I was relegated to the masses that would further define the conflict by wishing and praying that it would end.

I had a lot of friends who also did so.
Pete Seeger was one.
I never met him personally, but his words and songs were among my choicest ones.
So, I can truly say, We shall overcome the war machine one day.

I still weep for those fine men and women that surrender their lives to keep this nation strong and safe.
You are the finest this nation has to offer, and I recognize that.

Amen.

Don't know. I really don't.

Last inductions were in 1972, last draft lottery numbers were called for 1973. My lottery number was 19, I would have been called if they had not stopped inductions. One of the reasons I enlisted in July 1973. Was home on leave, enroute to my first submarine, when Saigon fell on 30 April 1975.

Call it luck of the draw or whatever, neither of us were meant to go over there. We serve in other ways.

I still weep for those fine men and women that surrender their lives to keep this nation strong and safe.

And may this Nation always be worthy of their sacrifice.

Now, let's get back to laughing with Stan....

And June Foray is one of the voice actors that Freberg used most.
Interview.

This turns out to be a most delightful bit.
He starts out with June, who is a most wonderful woman.
Some movie bits inbetween, and then he actually interviews Stan himself at length.

And here for your enjoyment, is a most amazing clip.
For two reasons....

First of all, this is Carson in 1955....I barely recognized him.

Second, the bit actor bouncing off of him was indeed, June Foray in real life.

Carson and Foray.

And here is some more history that I never knew about June Foray.

Bits she did on Twilight Zone?
Recent work on Disney?
And an Emmy award.

I truly had no idea that she had gone on for so long.
Wonderful insights.
From 2012.
And I believe she is still with us.

You all know of my love of Mel Blanc...
Chuck Jones is reported to have said, "June Foray is not the female Mel Blanc, Mel Blanc was the male June Foray."

Not sure I agree with that, but it is not far from the truth.
Just take a minute and read her amazing Wiki history.

It seems that at times, I blend all of my past creative loves into myself.
Mel Blanc, Mel Brooks, June Foray, Stan Freberg.

They all come from a time that I should have been in.

If I had been born in, let's say, 1930 or even 1940, I might have been among the creative folks that graced my life instead of being a simple man born in 1957. By then, most of the true talents in Hollywood were well on their way.

I could have been a young man when these things were being created. And probably would have been able to contribute to them.
You all know how 'creative' I can be.

Imagine me as Bugs Bunny. You on Seti have never heard my voice.
I do a pretty good JFK. His moon speech. And a few others.
I do not share them with others much, mostly for myself and the kitties.

I should have been there.

Glad you liked the bits about June.

Now, here is some more Freberg for you. And I believe that's June's voice with Stan on this one too.

It's a 28 minute or so clip of a 1957 radio show. Very nice.
