I looked in Lunatics Installer v0.43a ...
It looks like APv6 (CAL) calculation was possible on AMD/ATI HD2000 series.
APv7 is no longer possible?

Is there a way to calculate SETI or AP tasks on a (Windows OS): AMD ATI Radeon HD 2300/2400/3200/4200 (RV610) (336MB) ?

Thanks.

BTW, it's not my host.
How the member can detect the correct name of his GPU?
GPU-Z, at the top in the line 'Name'? Or there will be also just written HD 2300/2400/3200/4200?

AFAIK, ATI/AMD HD4*** could run SETIv7 and APv7, right? (from the LIv0.43a ATI page)

OS, Win7 x64, what would be the best driver for the SETI (and AP) project?

BTW, it's a laptop with AMD Athlonâ„¢ II Dual-Core M320 CPU. Not APU.
So the GPU is separately.

Thanks.

From the Lunatics v0.43a release:
"Please note that HD2xxx cards requiring brook (Hybrid) applications are not currently supported by Lunatics for Astropulse v7 - the brook application is supplied for cleaning up any AP v6 tasks that may be in progress."

So only ATI GPUs that support OpenCL. Some low end HD4000 didn't get OpenCL support. I think it was the the HD4650 someone was looking at adding to their old machine recently. Which can support OpenCL, but not all manufactures enabled it in their firmware. My HD4870 didn't have much of a problem with OpenCL

I moved my HD3450's over to collatz & I'm planing to try out Moo! Wrapper on them sometime.

No OpenCL on the RV610-based GPUs - and only 'beta' level OpenCL support was given to R700-series GPUs (most HD 4000 series).

Even if there was a Brook application for AstroPulse v7 the GPU is only used for a tiny fraction of the processing - most of it still runs off the CPU. Also, the RV610 is a very low-power GPU - it seems to have been included on some AMD motherboard chipsets.

I did use the Brook AstroPulse v6 application on my laptop with HD 2600 GPU a long time ago. I don't recall it being noticeably better performing than just running CPU-based AstroPulse on its own.

It was me with HD4650 on old AGP slot...it should work only on SSE2 procesors! ;)

But tell me more about that HD3450 card...'cause I have one in a laptop, that could crunch sthg... ;)

Umm well I have 5 of them crunching at Collatz right now. They are not super fast, but slow & steady.

In Brook build FFA part of processing was done on GPU. To increase throughput it was recommended to run few AP tasks on GPU, maybe even overcomitting CPU part.
But currently, with absence of AP tasks to make Brook AP7 seems little impractical.

Thx, will hook up that laptop on the Collatz when I get home! ;)

I got more infos from the owner.

It's a Compaq Presario CQ61-420US laptop, it have an ATI Radeon HD4200 GPU.

There is an AMD Graphics Driver, Released: Sep 25, 2009, Version 8.635.0.0 Rev. B.
'Updated' Oct 8, 2014. But have still the same version number?

AFAIK, laptop user must use the drivers from the laptop manufacturer, right?
He can't go to the AMD website and download/install a driver from there?
But, nonetheless, the driver will not make that the ATI HD4200 can crunch SETI/AP, right?

Maybe someone can make SETI/AP apps for this 'small' ATI/AMD VGA cards? ;-)

AFAIK, Milkyway were also a solution for 'small' ATI/AMD VGA cards, right?

Thanks.

Not really, they have an CAL app for older GPUs, however that are older high-end GPUs with DP support, in particular HD38X0 series. On a "small" GPU like the HD4200 Milkyway won't run.

OK, have fun:

It crashes on my ATi hosts though so fully UNtested.

I always use NVidia or ATi's drivers and never from the manufacturer. So no, you don't have to use the ones from the manufacturer. However, it isn't going to be the driver that is holding back crunching. It is going to be the features of the chip itself.

AMD's download page for laptop drivers provides a test to see if the laptop configuration is suitable. Some laptops have manufacturer's modifications which need special drivers. IOW, for SOME laptops the manufacturer's drivers are necessary.

I think it was HD 2000 series of mobile GPUs (which that HD 4200 would be part of) that required drivers the laptop manufacturer. Then again, that may have only been for Windows XP - I was forced to use the manufacturer driver for my HD 2600.

It can't hurt to try the standard AMD driver first - if it can't be used, it will tell you to go to the manufacturer's site for drivers.

Thanks to all.
A specially Thanks to Raistmer for the new app. :-)

Win7 x64 AMD GPU Driver

I'll suggest the owner to make 1st the manufacturer test, and 2nd to maybe download and install this driver.
We will see if the file will install the driver or will say something like 'not possible to install the driver'.

Because of the new app ...
Maybe someone already tested this new app?
The owner of the laptop isn't an 'advanced' SETI user (beta test experiences).
I wouldn't like to suggest him an app, and then the laptop will do 'strange' things. ;-)

Thanks.

EDIT: BOINC say 'driver: 1.4.344' installed.
What does this mean, is this the laptop manufacturer driver 'v8.635.0.0 Rev. B'?
Or the owner can see in the first few lines of BOINC Manager tab Messages (Log Window) this driver version (the other name)?

EDIT: BOINC say 'driver: 1.4.344' installed.
What does this mean, is this the laptop manufacturer driver 'v8.635.0.0 Rev. B'?

BOINC 'say' the CAL version

http://www.hal6000.com/seti/boinc_ati_gpu_cheat_sheet_full.htm

CAL 1.4.344 = Catalyst 9.7 = 2D Driver Ver 8.632.0.0000
so v8.635.0.0 should be about the same date 2009.07.xx

Test the new app with this driver before making the user to change drivers
- you know: old GPU 'feels' better with old driver

Prepare for the user benchmark package - ask him to run it and send you the results (the .txt file from ...\APbench\Testdatas\)

Your link for "Win7 x64 AMD GPU Driver" = Catalyst 14.12 will not work.

Last Catalyst for AMD Radeon HD 4000 Series / AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4000 Series seems to be:
Catalyst 13.9 (I don't know if it's good or not)

I recived confirmation that on target hardware (my own ATi cards no longer target ones, driver dropped real CAL support, though GPU detected by app as CAL one still) app works OK and return valid results in benchmark.
So, seems can be used indeed.
