Study says:

Flu-associated pneumonia tied to skipped flu vaccine

The flu vaccine may help prevent flu-related pneumonia, a study suggests.

When researchers looked at patients with pneumonia, those whose pneumonia was related to the flu were more likely to have skipped the flu vaccine, compared to patients with pneumonia from other causes.

Pneumonia can be a serious and common complication of catching the flu, the authors write.

World Marks First Week of No New Ebola Cases

Last week marked the first week of no new Ebola cases worldwide since the outbreak began in March 2014, the World Health Organization announced on Wednesday.

While the news is encouraging, there are still hundreds of contacts who are undergoing followup check-ins to make sure they stay healthy and the agency says the risk of transmission remains high.

Ebola countries record first week with no new cases

The three West African countries at the heart of the Ebola epidemic recorded their first week with no new cases since the outbreak began in March 2014.

The outbreak has so far killed more than 11,000 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

New cases have fallen sharply in 2015, but the WHO has warned that the disease could break out again.

J&J starts vaccine trial in Sierra Leone, even as Ebola fades

Johnson & Johnson has begun a clinical trial of a two-shot Ebola vaccine in Sierra Leone, underlining its determination to push ahead with development, even as the epidemic fades out in West Africa.

The new study will investigate the experimental product's safety and its ability to provoke an immune response to the disease, which the World Health Organization says has killed more than 11,000 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Measles can be a lesser-known risk for travelers

(Reuters Health) - Measles is still a risk for travelers, regardless of destination, and vaccination remains the best way to prevent it, according to travel health experts.

Data from 57 travel and tropical medicine clinics on six continents shows that between 2000 and 2014, there were 94 reported measles cases in these clinics, with two-thirds occurring after 2010. Measles affected tourists, business travelers, and people visiting friends or family.

Nurse with Ebola visited school day before being readmitted to hospital

A nurse currently in a “serious condition” with a late complication of the Ebola infection visited a school the day before she was readmitted to hospital.

Pauline Cafferkey was flown from Glasgow to an isolation unit at the Royal Free hospital in Hampstead, north-west London, in a military aircraft in the early hours of Friday morning, after being admitted to a Scottish hospital on Tuesday.

The London hospital said she is in a serious condition in the special unit where she was first treated last December.

Fifteen quarantied people released in Nigeria, after Ebola rumors

The blood samples were collected before his death, and taken to Irrua Specialist Hospital in Edo State to conduct the necessary tests.

The hospital’s administration had provisionally closed the Accident and Emergency Ward and decontaminated the unit after the death of a 21-year-old male student of the University, supposedly affected with Ebola.

Family of Ebola nurse Pauline Cafferkey says she was 'let down'

The family of nurse Pauline Cafferkey says doctors "missed a big opportunity" to spot she had fallen ill again.

Ms Cafferkey is in an isolation unit in London after tests indicated the Ebola virus is still present in her body.

The health board confirmed she was sent home by an out-of-hours doctor in Glasgow earlier this week.

Ebola beds prevented 40,000 deaths

The global response to the Ebola crisis in Sierra Leone helped avert 40,000 deaths but if aid had been offered sooner, thousands more lives there might have been saved, say researchers.

Britain's donations of more than £100m in the summer of 2014 helped to set up nearly 3,000 hospital beds.

This vital provision, researchers estimate, prevented 56,000 Ebola cases.

Lynn, I have yet to thank you for taking the trouble to keep us up to date on developments. I am in the process of applying to Projects Abroad with whom, as soon as family circumstances allow, I will be continuing my medical studies (as a preparatory step to joining MSF). It will be some months yet, but reading your thread keeps me focused on my goal. Thank you :-)
We have nothing to fear but fear itself. Apart from pain. And maybe humiliation. And obviously death. And failure. But apart from fear, pain and humiliation, failure and the unknown and death - we have nothing to fear. Who’s with me?
