Researchers develop test to detect virtually any virus

A new test that can detect virtually any virus that could infect any human or animal has been developed at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Diagnosing an illness can be expensive and time-consuming, as many tests are often required.

There is more problem in the world!
Hans Rosling talked last night on why UNHCR must get more money now to help Syrian refugees:

Guinea reports 4 Ebola cases; WHO details response reforms

Ebola cases in West Africa's outbreak region stayed in the single digits last week, with four cases reported, all from a known transmission chain in Guinea, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in its weekly update today.

In related developments, the WHO released a road map detailing its emergency response reforms that have taken shape in the epidemic's wake, and the US government announced more funding support for a rapid test for the disease.

Now’s the time to get your flu shot

Now’s the time to get your annual flu shot.

It takes about two weeks to develop an immune response after you get the vaccine, said Dr. George Morris, medical director for CentraCare Clinic.

“It’s best to get it before the season starts,” he said, which is usually in October. The flu season picks up in November and December and peaks in January and February.

I wonder how long it will be before the locals in west africa start eating bats again. One of their favorite delicacies.

Not only in West Africa.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megabat

Fruit bats are considered a delicacy by South Pacific Islanders, as well as in Micronesia. Consumption has been suggested as a cause of Lytico-Bodig disease on the Micronesian island of Guam, through bioaccumulation of a plant toxin to which the bats are immune.

Three species of bats tested positive for Ebola, but had no symptoms of the virus.[14] This indicates the bats may be acting as a reservoir for the virus.

Hmm. My GF had a near experience with a megabat in Sri Lanka when lying in bed...
And Guam as well! Almost US territory...

Ebola in the news..

Asian Ebola virus active in almost all states, says NIV study

Known as ‘the Asian Ebola virus’, the CCHF or the Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever virus, is now believed to be prevalent across the country. A study by the National Institute of Virology (NIV) here has determined 17 outbreaks so far, affecting 50 people, most of whom succumbed to the virus.

The CCHF has a fatality rate of up to 80 per cent. First detected in January 2011 in Ahmedabad, the virus that spreads from animals to humans is now active across almost all states, with Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan and Gujarat reporting cases, a sero-survey shows.

WHO Committee Says Ebola Remains a Public Health Emergency of International Concern

The seventh meeting of the Emergency Committee convened by the World Health Organization (WHO)'s director-general, Margaret Chan, MD, under the International Health Regulations (IHR) (2005) regarding the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa took place Oct. 1, 2015. As in previous meetings, the Committee’s role was to advise the WHO director-general as to whether the event continues to constitute a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) and, if so,whether the current temporary recommendations should be extended or revised, and whether new temporary recommendations should be issued.

Presentations were made by representatives of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone on the current epidemiological situation in those countries, response operations and exit screening.

Ebola Outbreak Remains Global Threat

The Ebola virus disease outbreak in West Africa remains a global threat despite a largely improved epidemiological situation in affected countries, the World Health Organization said Monday.

ENEVA (Sputnik) — According to a WHO statement, the conclusion has been made by the 7th meeting of Emergency Committee convened by the WHO Director-General regarding the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa.

Doctors anticipate nasty flu season

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — It's officially flu season.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu activity is currently low across the United States, but outbreaks can begin in October. The virus can hit kids particularly hard: More than 20,000 children are hospitalized each year because of complications from the flu. Last season, more than 140 deaths among children were attributed to influenza.

The disease is usually transmitted to humans by bites of Hyalomma ticks, which are found on cattle, buffalo, goat and sheep. Humans can also acquire the virus through exposure to CCHF-infected blood and tissues or to body secretions of an affected animal, during slaughtering or allied procedures or at a hospital.

We have a lot of ticks here.
You can get brain disease from them.
Hopefully not Ebola.

Ebola nurse Nina Pham’s lawsuit against Texas Health Resources will continue

A lawsuit filed by Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas nurse Nina Pham after she contracted Ebola last year will continue in a Dallas County civil court. Pham is suing the hospital’s parent company, Texas Health Resources, saying that it did not adequately train and protect its nurses from the disease.

I hope she wins the lawsuit.

Baby, maternal deaths soar in Sierra Leone on Ebola fear

Dakar - Maternal and newborn deaths in Sierra Leone have soared since the Ebola outbreak in West Africa as fear of being infected and mistrust of health workers deter pregnant women from giving birth in health facilities, researchers said on Tuesday.
