In 1975, the Community College I was attending had A computer. I can't tell you what it was. But, there was an entire department built around it.

In 1980, I had the pleasure of working with a DEC VAX 11/750, at another school. It had its own climate controlled room and was connected to a couple dozen monochrome terminals for students to use. (can you say Adventure/Colossal Cave?)

At the same time, I was playing around with a TI-58C programmable calculator ... my first personal computer, so to speak.

I played Adventure in 1981 on an Onyx computer running UNIX Version 7 on 512 kB RAM, 20 MB disk and 10 MB tape used to backup daily. Disks were 5 1/4 inches and very fragile. They were called Winchester, for some reason.

"Winchester" nickname originally was an analogy with 30-30 Winchester rifle...after I.B.M made his 3340 har drive with 30 MB platters.
