Hi. I have sterted getting tasks with estimated computation time of 8000+ hours with deadlines of only a few days away. As I don't have quantum computing here it's just not going to happen! Have aborted a couple - was that the wrong thing to do? Is this a general issue or some quirk of my setup? Will provide details when next one turns up if needed. Thanks. |

If you just started SETI the estimates are completely wrong. they will get to more realistic values as you complete some task. And no don't abort them, them will go through in time. |

Did you disable GPU processing in the middle of processing the tasks? |

Patrick Beautement it would help if you unhide your computers so we can look at the system you have and the units you are talking about . No personal information is shown so you don't have to worry about us knowing any thing other than what type of computer you have what version of windows and Bionic you are running and allowing us to look at the units that you have done . |

IMHO hiding computers isn't really needed. Personally I like seeing who has what computer and how much they are crunching with it. There is no personal information in it so all your doing is showing the CPU, GPU, Boinc Version and Operating system. Then it will show your RAC and how many total points the computer has earned and the last time it reported. Always interesting to see the vastly different ways computers are setup. I am using a computer I built for my first time and have owned them for over 40 years. Wasn't a computer back in 1975 called ... a calculator? LOL |

Thanks for that. Yes, GPU was disabled on advice from another thread (as I was getiiing 10s of 'computation error' messages every day), then re-enabled when I updated to BOINC 7.4.42. So that must have confused something. But I had to abort the units as they were hogging all the processing and were never going to finish this side of the 24 Apr deadline (at their current rate, it would've been 3 years before they finished). Will unhide as suggest. Hopefully, all has settled down again. |

Updating the BOINC version -shouldn't- have any effect on the Windows c0000005 errors you were getting. Your CPU tasks are all validating, but no GPU tasks have been completed since you re-enabled it. Time will tell... |

Patrick I'm only guessing as you have not unhid your machines but I'm think because your Rac is only 1,263 that you only have a core 2 or it's not that fast maybe 1,7gig If your going to do Ap's then remember to leave 1 core free for the GPU . So if it's only a core 2 with 2 cores then doing AP's will hog all the processing power . 1 core for the GPU which only leaves 1 core for everything else , and no room left to do anything else if your using both cores . MB's are not such a hog so you can use all the cores without it hanging much. If you only have a IGPU without a stand alone GPU like Nvida or ATI then your still not going to have enough power to do Ap's the IGPU is not as fast as a stand alone GPU To do Ap's without the machine Hanging or taking days to do a AP unit then you realy need a Quad core or 15 and above with a stand alone GPU and this will allow you to do 1 unit on the GPU and 2 units on the CPU with 1 core free to do other things , you can use the last core but it may slow things down a bit . or you can do 2 units on the GPU and 1 unit on the CPU with 1 core free anything less then you may have trouble with units taking to long and I would only do MB's if you don't have at least 4 cores AKA: Quad chip or I5, I7 , xenon , Phenom , FX chips and the GPU at least a 220gtx |

Hi Patrick There are so many amazing people on this forum it just is almost unbelievable. Not only that but these people love to help those who ask for it. The nub is if you don't let them get any info it makes it hard for them know what is needed. Some of issues that have been resolved and I think Holy Cow I wish I could find a way to hire all these guys and form an IT company and then probably go broke. Other than that if you want to make use of the knowledge base here just supply the needed info and BAM it is like rubbing the magic lantern. BTW I really need six numbers plus a power ball number. I can supply a link to last 600 sets that were generated if that helps. Really guys this should be simple for a collection of dudes as good as this group. Cactus sorry no matter how smart you are i'm afraid i't's always going to be pot luck with power ball mate, 1 in 40,000,000 chances. I don't know of any system that will help you win . Plenty of scammers out there that will ask for big buck's for a system but all you will do is waste your cash . |

Wasn't a computer back in 1975 called ... a calculator? LOL Not necessarily. This is what I was using back in 1975. |

It was 30 years not 40 years of computer experience, a typo on my part. My first computer was a Commodore 64 somewhere near 1985 and then I bought a 286 then 386 and haven't stopped spending in tech since then. It was kinda funny when Intel had to name the processors rather then use numbers because numbers could not be copyrighted but names could and other companies were tagging the Intel number on the chips they released. I think they went from numbers to Pentium if i am not mistaken. I still think lottery numbers could be predicted if given enough information. Exact mass of ball, exact location, exact force applied on balls when machine was turned on. I don't expect this information to become available though so the comment was meant as more of a joke than anything else. I still think the knowledge base here is amazing and look forward to reading this forum every day. Thanks guys for all the help you supply to us when we need it. Patrick I'm only guessing as you have not unhid your machines but I'm think because your Rac is only 1,263 that you only have a core 2 or it's not that fast maybe 1,7gig Actually, it's this: CPU type GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4130 CPU @ 3.40GHz [Family 6 Model 60 Stepping 3] Number of processors 4 Coprocessors INTEL Intel(R) HD Graphics 4400 (1297MB) OpenCL: 1.2 Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Professional x64 Edition, Service Pack 1, (06.01.7601.00) BOINC version 7.4.42 Not sure what's going on with his machine. GPU is apparently still disabled, as only CPU tasks are completing; GPU are all timing out. |

In 1975, the Community College I was attending had A computer. I can't tell you what it was. But, there was an entire department built around it. In 1980, I had the pleasure of working with a DEC VAX 11/750, at another school. It had its own climate controlled room and was connected to a couple dozen monochrome terminals for students to use. (can you say Adventure/Colossal Cave?) At the same time, I was playing around with a TI-58C programmable calculator ... my first personal computer, so to speak. |

Werecow I assume you have IGPU's on the Xenon as your stats don't show that you have a GPU . I would say that is the problem you don't have a stand alone GPU on your system and it just can't handle seti . Have you updated the drivers for the IGPU ? I would also upgrade to win 7 Xp and Vista are getting a bit old now and so is 2003 server r3 . If you need help in upgrading to a higher Op then pm me and I can help you there without saying to much more wink wink say no more |
