Message 1720629 - Posted: 31 Aug 2015, 18:00:50 UTC

Once on December 31 I drove from Rapallo to Mestre on the highways with a broken water pump. I noticed that the tempeture in the motor of my Lancia Beta was rising, but it was a very cold day. When I stopped to pay the ticket at Mestre, near Venice, the radiator blew up and I had to call the rescue truck. The car was brought to a mechanic and the water pump was replaced, at a price double its value. It was already dark and I drove from Mestre to Trieste, where my parents were waiting for me, at top speed. Fortunately the double overhead camshaft engine of the Beta had not suffered.

Whenever I've bought a second-hand car, the first thing I do is to drain radiator completely, remove hoses & replace with brand new ones. Flush radiator, then refill with water & anti-freeze.

In many ways I am grateful that at the moment, all I have to worry about when driving myself around is getting a puncture in my shoe... *pause to reflect* ... which last time did involve attaching a plank of wood to it... and then rapidly attaching both, very securely, to my foot, and getting stabbed by a nurse intent on making sure my jaw could drop open while I sleep, whether it wanted to or not... edit: come to think of it, it was quite a palaver... :/

Sorry to hear about your recent car trouble, Chris :( and your less recent trouble too, tullio :(

oh...and did we say we like humans too? Well we do :)

I did tell you about my adventure in the first few days of January, 2014, right? When I got stuck in a snow drift for several hours. Nothing actually broke, but I was somewhat afraid the township road grader was going to fall over on my car while trying to plow it out.

Wow good news!! The car has been retrieved, it will be repaired and ready by Friday night. All it needed was a new radiator. Including tow charge (8 miles) parts, labour, antifreeze, VAT, testing, it all came to £200. We are picking it up Saturday.

It means 300 miles in one day, but not worth getting B&B overnight. One will drive up, one will drive back. Could have been a lot worse.

It's life :-)

Glad to hear Chris, that you found an honest, fair and reputable mechanic, they are sometimes few and far between especially if you're from out of town and not expected to be a repeat customer.

I use an annual AAA membership as insurance should I encounter a road breakdown. I've used it once when stranded by a worn out battery. It includes 50 mile towing.

I thought that was the beer, but I won't argue over a minor detail like a slice of bacon or a glass of ale
