It is lovely to see her back, and I know how much she genuinely missed being on line with her posts at Seti and other places. Hopefully when she's caught up with all the news, like the recent mod rotation etc, she'll be tapping away for dear life :-)

Not bad looking from the front, either....

@Donald - I meant of course your play on words to my post :-)

Yes, I saw the smiley, and tried to respond in kind. Guess I've still got some learning to do.....

@ Lynn - I try to live up to the second part of my sig. Sometimes gets me in trouble though!

Ah, but that's what makes it so much fun (8{)

"William Knight began transporting goods for the local community back in 1865, using a horse and cart. With family members soon entering the business, more work could be taken on and a strong and reliable reputation soon developed. In 1918 the company began to use motorised vehicles and ‘A’ licenses were granted for three trucks on inauguration of the Road Traffic Act in 1933. The company, which became Knights of Old Limited in 1957, was making steady progress, mainly in the agricultural industry until the decision was made to focus on general haulage in 1968. This resulted in the need for a change of location and the company moved to Cherry Hill in the village of Old, Northamptonshire. The new site enabled the company to expand by introducing warehouse facilities."

*loud and reverberating SNORT* :)))))))) good one :) Heh heh heh heh - of course, you've made me COMPLETELY forget what I came in here to say now...

*sweep thread with eyes* whilst I try to remember *long suffering sigh* I will say instead that I had hoped (by now) that I would have been waxing so lyrically on the boards about being back that you'd all be feeling like...

...her :)

Annie's back!!! I can't say all's right with the world, but one little piece of it is.

As usual it was really lovely to meet her again and many hugs were exchanged on all your behalf's.

Chris, Chris, Chris... Besides the glaringly inappropriate apostrophe, I'm wondering if that should be behalves.

Many people suffer that as they enter the portals of the cafe. It must be something to do with the space-time distortion convulsions around the doorways. Or at least that's my excuse.

And here I thought that little tingle was the blower/vacuum system that keeps the bugs out and cleans the dust and mud off your boots....

Barman, may I have a pint of red ale and a plate of sausage rolls, please? Thanks much.

Mr S, I take issue with you young man :-))

David, David, David, I will grudgingly accept that the apostrophe was a mistake, but you are also wrong on the Grammar.

More correctly it should have been "upon the behalf of all of you".

Ye gods what is the world coming to when we have Americans (of all people) picking Englishmen up upon English language grammar, when they can't even spell it correctly! Next time I meet Annie our drinks are going on your tab :-))

As it is spoke

*I* did not write it the wrong way in the first place.

I also did not say definitely that it should be behalves. I merely wondered if it should be. In point of fact, I checked with two different online dictionaries and neither of them offered a plural at all.

Not content to leave it at that, though, I have just checked with oed.com, which I trust you will accept as authoritative. If you click the "show more" link at the end of the etymology paragraph, it states "...had even a plural behalfes, behalfs in 16–17th cent." (It adds that the final -e of the Middle English was the dative ending.)

I would point out that there is a subtle difference in meanings between the way you originally wrote it and the version you offered in correction of yourself. If you pluralize the word, it refers to each of us as individuals, whereas the other way around it refers to all of us as a group.

My conclusion is that, if we can pluralize it at all in this day and age, the correct way to do is as you did it... minus the apostrophe.

...<time passes>...

Having just written all the above, I finally checked the link you posted. It agrees with you that you were incorrect in the first place.

I have a bone to pick with it, however. It says that "in behalf" is still commonly used in the US. While I must admit that they have observed more examples than I, I most definitely say that I have never heard it that way. I am only familiar with "on behalf." (Or maybe I have just heard it so seldom that I have always dismissed it as incorrect. I'll have to think about that.)

The bottom line is, you proved yourself to be wrong. I was only wrong for thinking that you were mostly right.

Donald - I can think of a very equitable manner to resolve that question - they share the next round. each of them pays half the tab.

Drinks are on Chris & David
