It's not in my profile, but I work in Cable TV. My techs get a lot of practice on Windows and Mac's installing modems and nic cards. I would like for them to pick-up some Linux experiance before we are overrun by it. What is generally the most in-use Linux platform out there. Are there any other general practices or even specific things you would expect a technician to know about Linux. Please take into consideration that I am sending you a technician with generally 1 to 2 years experiance. I know... I wouldn't let someone that inexperianced touch my computer either.. buttttt. I was hoping I can count on my fellow seti crunchers for some advice on this platform. Padawan_Jeff-The Jedi Alliance |

Linux distrobutions are getting more user friendly every day. Fedora Core 3, Redhat 9 and Mandrake 10 are common distros. They will automatically install most ethernet cards. This link has some good info on setting up the cable modem. http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Cable-Modem/ |

Also, if you have a community college or equivalent check what they have available. Our school here has some very good Linux/Unix administration & configuration courses. Could even get the company to assist if not pay for it. |
