Message 1664541 - Posted: 12 Apr 2015, 15:32:53 UTC

I've been watching a lot of TV lately where the story line involved electronic eavesdropping by the NSA. I began to wonder if during such monitoring whether they are required to report an emergency unfolding, such as a serious fall or heart attack, to the proper agency if it is obvious that they are the only ones who can help.

I also wonder if their snooping is as widespread as some TV writers would have us believe.

Since the founding November 4, 1952 the NSA authority are responsible of the US signals intelligence. This includes intercepting / reconnaissance by radio, telephone and internet and thus corresponds to the National Defence Radio Establishment FRA, in Sweden. The NSA also maintains secure (encrypted) communications for senior executives. NSA's existence has long been denied and the US government has only recently admitted that the NSA exist, why the shortening of the many read out as "No Such Agency". The NSA is estimated to have about 30 000 workers but the exact number is classified. The company SAIC is a major subcontractor to the NSA.

Swedish National Defence Radio Establishment (FRA) cooperates with the US NSA and the British GCHQ. The data were presented in a hearing on the wiretapping scandal in a committee of the EU Parliament of journalist Duncan Campbell. Sweden should have given the NSA access to cables under the Baltic Sea, which according to IT expert Fredrik Ljunggren houses very much of Russia's Internet communications.

When doing this surveillance a lot of side information are noted.
This is now very much discussed how to handle it even it's obvious that some crimes are beeing discussed.

It would be helpful to us Janne if you "quoted" what you have read elsewhere, so that we know which are your words and which are down to others. I assume that the last paragraph is yours?

The last paragraph is not mine!

Bob, their job is to collect information for a specific reason. If they hear something that isn't about that reason then they did not hear anything. Just like Secret Service agents who see the President ....

The problem is that the meta-data is captured and stored for later retrieval, with specific keywords that are reviewed immediately. You can then go back and find out about this person's habits using the meta-data to reconstruct their life and pretty much know every detail about them.

The falsity here is that there aren't a bunch of operators "listening" to an event. It never happens in real-time. They have other operations for real-time monitoring. So no one will ever know when an event is happening until long after the event occurred, and if someone even performed a search on such a person to know it occurred.

Most of what you see on TV about the NSA is over-dramatized, shortened to fit within a 48 minutes episode (after removing commercials; longer if it is a multi-part episode), and tweaked to tell a specific story with a resolution at the end. This is far from the reality of how it all works.

Sad too, because TV is how a lot of people get their exposure to, and ideas about technology (and various other things).

Ahem....
Bob is NOT watching too much TV.

Due to some political statements I have made, I am on a watch list.

I have intercepted more than one snooping swipe at me.
And this was very very sophisticated stuff.
Not your average teenage let's get drunk and hack something type of attack.

I cannot prove it, but I believe the NSA has hacked me. And before you write this off to my paranoid tendencies, read the article. Pay attention to it.

I have every plausible reason to believe that somebody in Washington monitors almost every post I make here. Because I am an outspoken hater of Obama.

As long as I don't plan any threat against the president, they also know I am just a nutcase, and don't imply any threat to the state.

I have joked about 'black copters' and certain black sedans parked down the block. Those are real.

What article are you talking about?
NSA dont hack people, they monitors you.
But with so little information at hand your opinion are probably ignored.

LOL..
I assure you, they monitor me..
Just one voice in a million that they do so.

I'd just as soon poke a stick in their eye, and they know it.

Yes it is.

Watch this from 27 minutes in.

It starts out a bit silly, but he does explain quite nicely how they can see almost everything you do.

I wouldn't worry about the NSA, I'd worry about Google.

Thats very true Gary.
Googles has developed very refined tools to search the Internet.
And how are paying this?
Yes Big Companies monitoring customers consuming habits.
Doing that you also get a lot of side information.
NSA are probably using theme as well.

Yes...
I am monitored every minute of every day.
I have pissed off far too many not to be.
This is a fact.
Not a dream or suspicion.
The only thing left for them to do is to address me directly...which to date has not happened. I suspect it may soon...LOL.

Not a laughing matter, really.
I got tags on me longer than your best thoroghbred.
I ignore them most of the time, but when internet browsing becomes laborous, I know why.

If you think this is funny, I assure you it is NOT.

Just because I happen to be about the most outspoken person on the Seti boards does not mean I condone my being snooped at every moment.

Pissed off just does not cover it at times.

Relax Mark.
For some it's not a laughing matter.
Not at all.
A big problem is that people are given so much personal information on the net.
When search engines are given you a report or suggestions and you do cross references you will get a LOT of the persons personal life on display.
I don't Think anybody wants that...

NSA, Google and others works the same.

One thing that disturbed me was the spider web nature of their snooping. For example, they have a warrant to listen in on person A, when that person calls person B and says something potentially incriminating then they add person B to the list. Person C calls person A and mentions that person B told him something about a specific activity so now they are listening to person C's communications and so it grows.

I know they can't listen in on every conversation of every call they monitor so they have key words that set off an alarm and there is a person that immediately starts paying attention to the content.

I can't help but wonder what percentage of citizens in office and/or have positions of influence are being watched or listened to. So far the big black SUV has not driven past my house.

BTW the TV series are "The Good Wife" and of course "24".

You make the mistake in believing that "they" could sift competently through millions of data points.

Since there is no profit motive or performance review "They" could just sit there and collect their salary and comment how each new nut was "on their radar".
