This is quite a follow-on "Ouch!"... Really, is anyone still using the Windows Phone since the demise of Nokia?...

That amazing Microsoft software quality, part 97: Windows Phone update kills Outlook, Calendar

Microsoft has thrown gasoline on its quality-assurance dumpster fire by disabling the Mail and Calendar apps on some...

... "Microsoft issued an automatic app upgrade for the email client on Windows Phone 10 overnight on 7th/8th November," the reader said. "We all woke up yesterday morning to find that email is no longer working...

I dumped my Window$ phone 8 months ago when I couldn't reload some software that had gone bad because the Micro$oft $tore no longer supported Window$ phone$.

This just means more customers for Android.........I'm SO HAPPY with my Galaxy S7........no more B$ from the mind$ in Redding to deal with.........I hope an Android PC OS is in the pipeline, I'll dump Window$ soooooo fast......

IT is what we allow it to be...
IT or I.T.? :p
Yes. :P

Exactly so :-P

To enumerate just three of a multitude of possibilities:

  1. If you're taking a Fatalist view, then IT is whatever 'it' already is: "What is, is." (or in a more down to Earth context: Marketing is your god to victimize you for life);
  2. Accepting Information Technology as it is, then you accept your slavery to all that is (good and bad) in your enslavement to Proprietary lock-in and The Religion of Marketing;
  3. Or, the IT is a something that you can choose to take an interest in to change for your own good (and hopefully for the good of others).

Are you going to explore your power of choice today?

(To misquote some old Marketing-speak ;-) )

IT is also what we make it,

Indeed so...

Microsoft lobs Windows 10, Server October 2018 update at world, minus its file-nuking 'feature', after actually doing some testing

... Are we all in a feverish dream where the latest version, build 1809, is stable and fit for purpose, and Patch Tuesday was totally uneventful?...

... It's almost as if the broken 1809 build never existed. You're expected to forget the past, and start over with the new and improved 1809...

... "We recommend IT administrators begin to validate that apps, devices and infrastructure used by their organization work well with the new release before broadly deploying," the Windows server team noted in the potential understatement of 2018.

And the game of 'whack-an-exploit' continues unresolved:

It's November 2018, and Microsoft's super-secure Edge browser can be pwned eight different ways by a web page

... All are listed as 'critical' risks...

Really! How many 'bug' fixes are needed?! On-going? Forever??

IT is what we make it...

Had to back it out. Major problem with Edge - Unable to create context process (error code: 0x802705b). In other words can't load a page. Tech support had no feed back on it, thought I was an insider. Please be aware that if you have your system set up to NOT install device drivers you will have to install those drivers again, they will not carry over.

Hi Cliff,

Yep, what else is new? Micro$oft has this attitude that they know our computers better than we do. We are just dumb users! Why do you think they circumvent the settings they "give us" to prevent such actions? As buggy as everything that comes out of that place is, I don't trust anything, ESPECIALLY drivers, from Micro$oft.

I have tried other browsers: Edge, IE, Chrome, Safari, Opera, etc. and various Firefox knockoffs. I refuse to use any of them, especially the ones from Micro$oft. I just don't like them and the Firefox knockoffs don't stand up to good ol' Firefox.

I still have about 3 months on my time limit for getting "feature updates" from them. So I won't be seeing 1809 for some time yet.

Some day, some how, someone has GOT to step in and put a stop to Micro$ofts actions.

Have a great day! :)

Only the marketplace can do that. If enough users leave MS products for other alternatives, then MS might notice and change.

Hi Keith,

The problem with that is that the majority of software is written for the Windows OS. Take games for instance. I play World of Warcraft. I have tried a few times to get it to run on Linux with no success at all. And I don't know enough about Linux to be able to try to figure out what goes wrong. Sometimes the error messages are too cryptic, as is the case with Windows too. Plus there's all the Enterprises using Windows and Micro$oft software such as Office. There's no way they'll dump Micro$oft and go with Linux or even Apple, not when they have 100 or even 1K+ workstations.

Bottom line: I don't see a stop to what Micro$oft is doing within my lifetime and I'm only 66 years soon to be 67.

Have a great day! :)

Yes, multi-seat licenses are a roadblock to other OS'. But all it takes is the IT Manager to make the decision for change.

I see World of Warcraft as one of the compatible, pre-approved games in the Proton Steam library. In case you hadn't heard yet, Proton is a custom Wine installation with sole purpose to play Windows games as well as native Windows.
[Edit] See I was wrong. The Reddit post was incorrect. This is the current list of compatible games.

A cumulative upgrade failed to install on my new HP PC, which is running Windows 1803, while my older PC was running 1809. Boinc runs on both.

God, will it never end? (No, is my guess) An email from ZDnet popped into my inbox a couple minutes ago, Windows 10 1809's new rollout: Mapped drives broken, AMD issues, Trend Micro clash and am just sitting here shaking my head at the lunacy of it all. I've been using Windows for Decades, and learned and followed the every other release method pretty routinely. 98-XP-7-?

Watching this pretty much from the sidelines as I only have one computer (at my office, which rarely gets used currently) running W10, I just sit here thinking about how 2020 is barreling down the tracks towards 7's 'extinction'. Yeah, I know I can, like I did with XP, run it after all support for it ends, but there will come a time when, like with XP, it just won't be tenable or practical to continue running it. And looking at just how badly MS has been and continues to bungle 10's support, plus how it operates (having to learn a new way to do the same things I've done with my computers for years, for no good reason other than just because), as well as it's Skynet tendencies, well, I guess the future looks rather bleak.

I have tried Linux, and might just be forced to have to go in that direction if it will work with the applications I use, though I know not all of them have direct replacements. Maybe, in the year plus that we have between now and 7's final death throes, MS will get their poop in a group so to speak, and learn some hard lessons from the multiple fiascos they've inflicted upon themselves. Not very likely, but still hoping. Otherwise I guess it'll have to just be me coming to terms with, and accepting of, getting assimilated by the Borg at that point. Resistance and futility, and all that stuff... :-/

Hi Al,

Looks like I may just have to increase the time deferment for getting the "feature update" from Micro$oft.

I did a quick scan read of the article, and it doesn't look like Micro$oft will delay the rollout this time. So, once again, the brainless ( the ones only interested in the bottom line ) at Micro$oft will NOT respect their customer base. It figures. :\

Have a great day Al! :)

I did the install again today and spent about 2 hrs. with M$S, some guy calling himself Nikko, attempting to find the root cause of why Edge couldn't load any page. He even installed some software from tweeking.com to supposedly fix the system files, which didn't work. After several attempts, adjustments, recycles, I guess the tech support rep gave up because after the last recycle he didn't reconnect with me, so I backed out again and deferred any further updates.

Who would believe it?!...

If at first or second you don't succeed [try it on again...], you may be Microsoft: Hold off installing re-released Windows Oct Update

Six weeks after first release of build 1809, and Redmond still can't get it right...

... Buried among the release notes for the re-released build is this little advisory, in which it admits: ...

... We can imagine that being a little annoying for people working in work environments...

... Microsoft says it'll sort out the issues "in the 2019 timeframe." That stunning Redmond Q&A at work again, we guess...

... All in all, try it out before you deploy it on [any] system you rely on.

Well, well, well... Fancy that?!...

Has Windows finally fallen into the mire of unmaintainability? (Too many side-effects and too much conflicting shoddiness such that fixing one part then breaks many other parts?)

Memo to Microsoft: Windows 10 is broken, and the fixes can't wait

Windows isn't working – and Microsoft urgently needs to change how it develops the platform, and jettison three filthy practices it has acquired in recent years...

Hi Martin,

Dang, Fall is almost over. 1809 - 190x Winter Edition? lol ;)

Perhaps they should scrap 1809 and concentrate on the fixes for the 1903 Spring Edition. lol ;)

Have a great day! :)

Hi Keith,

And to think, as I was re-building this PC, I decided to go with Window$ 10 instead of sticking with Win 7. :(

I really thought that Windows 10 was much better. It takes care of temp files and such by itself. I've seen where Win 7 drives were maxed out because of temp files building up and users not deleting them. Oh well... ;)

It seems like Micro$oft is scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to software engineers and the like. I always knew that Micro$oft was more interested in how much money they can extort from Window$ users, rather than putting out a "quality product". ;)

Tag line changed...

Have a great day! :)
