Windows 10 illegally collects data at install, says Brazil prosecutor
* Federal prosecutors in Brazil claim that the standard installation process for Windows 10 violates local laws by collecting user data without "express consent."
* Brazilian prosecutors are asking Microsoft to end its automatic data collection within 15 days and add new notifications on data collection.

Well when my Win7 licenses run out and I eventually find some video editing apps that will do what I get now then Linux Mint is the way I'll be going.

BTW, I've been building a nice little Linux Mint community (of all ages) around this little country village, here in the highlands down under, starting with old XP/Vista PC's that I've been converting over and after people with Win8 (and later versions) have seen and used these conversions of their friends they also want to join the club (in fact, between them and surveillance cameras installations, I'm being run ragged trying to keep up with my own stuff).

Sorry, but I can't report any Win7 converters as yet and I can't blame them for that (for now).

Cheers.

Wiggo, did you catch the news today that Mint is abandoning Ubuntu and moving to Arch Linux?

No I havn't, but I'm sure that I can tackle that hurdle when it comes (that's if it causes any problems at all). Time will tell. ;-)

Actually, didn't catch that one. Just saw the notice on a news feed. Sorry to have posted. I just had a bad experience with Mint and thought the move might improve things since Arch is well regarded as the "expert" Linux. Now that I followed up the post see the reference to April Fools Day.

I just had 100 GPU tasks (on my Nvidia GTX 1060) fail instantly and found out that my computer was apparently in the middle of installing this update. Might be a coincidence, but pretty odd I've done thousands of work units per week for ages and only had one failed one until this update was installing. Grrrr....

99 MB tasks, 1 AP task -- all I've checked had the same "too many exits" errors.

The update mentioned has yet to be released.
Your system was most likely downloading some other update, and probably included a video driver in that update.

Suspend all processing in the BOINC Manager.
Download the current video driver from NVidia and install it. Once it's installed, re-enable processing in the BOJNC Manager & see if that sorts things out.

Oops - sorry didn't catch that. The update that clobbered everything was "2018-04 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64 based Systems (KB4093105)"

In any case, after the forced reboot of my system the GPU again resumed processing tasks. Before the reboot a check of GPU-Z showed the card was only idling at 139 MHz, whereas it normally is running between 1847-1860 MHz. None of the tasks that have processed since the reboot have errored out, so in any case things seem to be working fine since.

I've been running the most recent video driver for a couple of days, ver: 397.31.

Again, another reason to stop Windows 10 from updating your video drivers with a simple configuration change in the Control Panel. You should only update the video driver with a driver directly downloaded from Nvidia or AMD.

I just got 1803. I said "no" to all Microsoft proposals. BOINC seems OK.

It would appear the correct response when dealing with M$ is "Just Say No"......

I just backed out of the new update (ver. 1803 - build 17134.1). It does not recognize my external USB Blu-Ray drive. Can't use it for anything, movies, music, etc.

Did MS nuke its driver? Might be worth a refresh. Just a thought.

I think it did. Upon the restore back to the previous version, the device was recognized and is working perfectly.

A person at the pub yesterday was quite interested in my old ex-Vista Celeron lappy and was very surprised on how well it performed with Linux Mint when I told them that their Win10 lappy has 6 times the performance than it, so another Win10 to Linux Mint conversion will happen here over the weekend some time.

Cheers.
