Despite the claim that the resource overhead in 10 is less than in 7, I am very leery about switching over and taking the chance of screwing up a computer that is running very well on 7. And I very much doubt that I would see any improvement with a new OS. I totally agree Mark. Sadly it will get harder for some new hardware to get win 7 installed. With each crime and every kindness we birth our future. |

I totally agree Mark. Also agree, Mark. I run 7, 8.1 and 10 on various platforms(10 on a Surface Tablet), I find all three to be basically the same when configured for my use(same bells and whistles just different control locations and interfaces), but 10 is particularly hard to use. I don't know if that's just endemic to all OSs on Tablets or just me. I just prefer 7, it's like that old pair of jeans that always just 'feel good and comfortable'. Greetings, The question you have to ask yourself is: "What happens when January 2020 comes around and I won't get any more security updates for my Windows 7." Upgrade to Windows 8 (not sure when it's end of life is scheduled for)? I see 2 choices: 1) Upgrade to Windows 10 and be assured of receiving security updates for the foreseeable and unforeseeable future 2) Hope beyond hope that Linux catches up and can run what we want to run that ONLY runs on Windows or that the manufacturers of what only runs on Windows will see the light and port their stuff to Linux Later this month I will be ordering the last 2 pieces I need for my Z370 build, RAM and an M.2 NVMe drive. I already have Windows 10 v1709 burned to a bootable flash drive. I won't be going through the headache of trying to get Win 7 to run reliably on a i7 8700 for less than 2 years. As much as I like Win 7, I am going to byte the bullet and put it out to pasture ( that is not a typo ;) ). And, for those that think I am a fanboy ( or fanboi ) of Micro$oft, believe me, I am not. I do not like their practices. Until Micro$oft goes back to thinking of the customer first and money second, I will not be a fan of them. The biggest mistake was for Bill Gates to leave Micro$oft, in my opinion. FFT Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Did I mention that I am getting an ever more serious disdain for M$ seemingly every week? Avoid Windows 10 crapware: How to get rid of Candy Crush and all the rest And according to MS's #1 uber cheerleader at zdnet.com, Mr. Bott, even following his own suggestions, he admits that it doesn't really solve the crapware problem, it best case just substitutes another, potentially more 'useful' set of crapware instead. And admits that this is the situation for pretty much for any business that isn't large enough to have an IT dept staffed with people who will be creating their own versions of it to roll out, with only what _they_ want their users to be exposed to, and what they want to expose to M$ as well. Funny how that isn't allowed for us mere mortals, huh? Wonder if these have anything to do with it? Crapware: Why manufacturers install it, what you can do about it, and why it's not going to go away Running Windows 10? Here's how Microsoft plans to milk more profits out of its cash cow And and of course, what they've become infamous for: Windows 10 telemetry secrets: Where, when, and why Microsoft collects your data And yeah, we'll see if this actually does any good: Windows 10: Microsoft rolls out new privacy tools for telemetry data I'm not holding my breath. And a weird thing about all of these articles, it appears that they all have 0 comments, which I have to believe means that they've disabled comments for all them. Pretty interesting choice, because I'd be willing to guess that there are more than a few people who have opinions on all of them. |

... he admits that it doesn't really solve the crapware problem, it best case just substitutes another, potentially more 'useful' set of crapware instead. Hi Al, I watched a YouTube video about removing most, if not all, of the Micro$oft crapware in Windows 10. I remember that Candy Crush was one of them, but don't remember the rest. I also don't remember the YouTuber mentioning anything about replacements. If memory serves, I believe he mentions something about a utility that will take care of that for you so you don't have to waste your time with the actual crapware removal. I'll see if I can find the video and link it here. The YouTuber worked for Micro$oft for 15 years and was "fired" just prior to the "free" release of Windows 10 in 2016. Have a great day, Al. :) Siran Crapware removal video #1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgKJMsJ-6XU Unwanted apps uninstall video #2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnAzCnbDNr8 I found that there are many more videos about crapware removal on YouTube. Hope this helps. :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. I am still getting updates on 1709. My Einstein@home GPU tasks rum smoothly on my GTX 1050 Ti board with nVidia driver, while Seti@home GPU tasks cause a frequent reboot of the PC while completing perfectly with no error. I am not a Windows fan, I have two Linux boxen running other BOINC projects, but Windows 10 seems OK to me. Tullio |

I have a win 10 pro (i5-4590, 8GB, GTX 640), BOINC runs fine w/o issues. But I don't run other programs on that computer, it is dedicated to SETI. |

Last night before I went to bed, I saw three updates waiting in Windows Update for Win7. The Malicious Software check that I hide by default, the monthly rollup and KB2952664. This afternoon only KB2952664 was still there, the rollup has been silently removed. KB2952664 isn't coming onto this system due to: "This update performs diagnostics on the Windows systems that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program." Since I don't participate in that program, it's not coming on. So, no updates this month? :) |

Siran, thanks for the links, as now that I have been assimilated by the W10 Borg, I guess I will have to care about what M$ does to it. I had planned to live foot loose and fancy free for at least a couple more years, but whaddaya gonna do? This will help me cut it back to a more manageable level I guess, though I, like many many others, would really just prefer to completely remove it, or better yet, avoid putting it on in the first place, but you have to go with what it possible I suppose. Thanks again. |

Linux adepts, read it and weep: Microsoft built its own custom Linux kernel for its new IoT service Introducing Microsoft Azure Sphere: Secure and power the intelligent edge But as said, it's for IoT devices (for now). So not coming to your Surface Pro any time soon. |

I'm still monitoring updates for 7 that arrive in WSUS. I'm a bit peeved that MS said that the monthly rollups would not apply to WSUS--WSUS would still get the individual updates that were contained within. That lasted for the whole first month of starting to do the rollups. The following month, only rollups show up. And then MS changed the way their website shows info about the KB numbers, so it's really difficult to find out what each one actually does. So I've erred on the side of caution and I just don't approve the rollups for distribution. And yeah, I keep seeing 2952664 show up all the time. That was one of the first ones to avoid as it was the first building-block to enabling 7 to be upgraded to 10. I like not having datamining and telemetry, thank you very much. Greetings Cosmic, And yeah, I keep seeing 2952664 show up all the time. That was one of the first ones to avoid as it was the first building-block to enabling 7 to be upgraded to 10. I like not having datamining and telemetry, thank you very much. Well I'll be damned! I got that "update" installed on the 11th this month. WHY?!? Is this another plot by Micro$oft to get Windows 10 on PCs not yet running it? I'll be re-building this PC with new 8th gen tech sometime next week and granted, I will be installing Windows 10. But yet another nefarious plot to get Windows 10 on PCs? The basic reason I will be installing Windows 10 is because it is a headache to get Win 7 installed on a Coffee Lake based PC, not to mention that Win 7 just was not built for the current generation silicone. And, not to mention that Win 7 support will die out in January 2020. And, Win 7 hasn't a clue what an M.2 NVMe drive is. I'm not sure about regular SSDs and whether Win 7 knows of them or not. Damn Micro$oft and their damned arrogance! >_< Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Greetings Cosmic, A regular SSD is just a hard drive to Windows 7, they read them just fine. |

I'm not sure about regular SSDs and whether Win 7 knows of them or not. SSDs existed before Win7. No problems with my system with some (now) old Vertex2 SSDs when it had Win7 on it. Personally I don't have any issues with WIn10. It's more responsive & stable than Win7 was (and it is an upgrade over an existing Win7 installation). I run Win10Pro so i'm able to disable the automatic update of video drivers & the like. And I just set the privacy settings to ones that i'm happy with. Anyone who has an account with Facebook (or similar) is giving away far more information than M$ gets with their most aggressive telemetry settings. I don't have a smart phone because I don't like the way that you have no privacy at all when you use them (Android & Apple are no different). With Win10 I can reduce the amount of data M$ get, without the need of 3rd party tools. Grant Darwin NT |

The problem with 7 and SSDs are the NVMe ones. 7 does not have the capability by default/natively to use those. I've read there is a later update (some KB number in the 290xxxx range) that gives 7 the ability to do NVMe drives, but even then, it's not guaranteed. I've done a lot of research on NVMe + 7 and it seems that Samsung is the only M.2 SSD that will work with 7 period. Samsung has NVMe drivers for 7, none of the other brands do. It is possible the generic MS one from that KB number may work, but they sure aren't making it easy to stick with 7. And I'm waiting for guinea pigs to confirm if the 2700X + Gigabyte x470 board will in fact work with 7. Gigabyte has drivers for 7 (and they are the only mfr with a x470 board that has 7 drivers), but they say that only 1000-series works. But I'm pretty sure that's only for the APUs. I found this unofficial answer earlier today regarding 2000-series CPU + x470 + win7, and it *should* work....but again, I'm waiting for guinea pigs with money they're willing to spend to try it and find out if it really does work. I'd really like to stay on 7... but MS+mfrs sure aren't making it easy. Linux laptop: record uptime: 1511d 20h 19m (ended due to the power brick giving-up) |

Running Spybot Antibeacon seems to have prevented those verbotten updates on my Win8.1 systems. I need to check the Win7 builds I did for friends to see if they are protected as well. "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |
