Thanks for the reply, Bill. I was reading up on it a bit as one of my developer friends was talking about it regarding Ryzen support.

No more updates if you build a Win 7 or 8.1 System?

Sounds like a win/win to me................. " : >

What I haven't been able to find though, is if that will affect WSUS, or only if you go directly through MS's servers. I'm thinking it won't affect WSUS.

Microsoft Technet shows in a long long long long long long list what Windows 10 all collects on the basic level...

The Basic level gathers a limited set of information that is critical for understanding the device and its configuration including: basic device information, quality-related information, app compatibility, and Windows Store. When the level is set to Basic, it also includes the Security level information.
I doubt you would want to know what they gather then on the Full Diagnostics level, but you can check into the highlights of that over here. .

I got a Windows 10 update at 11 CEST in the middle of forbidden period (8-17) without any warning. It was not the Creators Update.

Updates will happen at any time, it's the recycle that throws everyone off and could cause problems, so as long as it does not recycle during the active period you should be okay. I got mine @ approx. 11:00 yesterday morning with a notice that it had updated, but needed to recycle to take effect. Since I was doing nothing at the moment I went ahead and did the update, forcing the recycle and the machine did updates for build 1607. Rechecked for further updates and recycled again. Since I knew that the Creators Update (15063.138) could come down the pike later then sooner, I went ahead and forced its update, took about 45 minutes total with a couple of smaller updates after it.

BTW, the active period for update recycling has been extended to 18 hours, so I now have mine set 06:00 -> 24:00.

That change will be welcomed. 12 hours is too limited.

I have been updated on the 7th to Version 1703 and build 16170.1000. I believe that that might be closer to the Creator's Update.

Yesterday I bit the bullet and clean installed Windows 10 on the ailing Lenovo G50-30 that was laying forlorn next to the TV for slightly over a year. It's always on the loader, we hardly ever use it, because of all the Lenovo crud on it and the fact that Windows 10 had made it slower than a snail swimming in cold molasses.

So I put Windows 10 Home x64 on a USB stick, started the laptop with the stick in it up, and started the install. First I threw the 8 (!!) partitions away that Lenovo apparently finds necessary to put on the drive. It's only a 500GB drive, so having 8 (!!) partitions on it doesn't make it very useful. Of course that means the original Windows 8 .1 repair partition is gone now as well, but I don't care. An hour later, the installation was done, all 12.6GB of Windows 10 was installed and running.

First I installed Bitdefender AVP 2017, then went and deleted a lot of the extras from the start menu. I like having Minecraft on it though, although I can't for the life of me let it install the full version, only the 90 minute test version. Maybe I have to play the 90 minutes first. We'll see. Also strange you can't log in with your Mojang account, but now need to enter with the Microsoft account. Oh well.

So then I went to the Lenovo site to look around where/what... and found that this laptop wasn't even certified to run the Anniversary Edition, let alone this Creators Update. It's just not in the list, I shouldn't have done it... well, I didn't do it the first time, at that time it appeared overnight, so don't blame me. But if you do have Lenovo G50-30 lying around as a book-stand, do know you can install Win10 CU clean on it and that it'll work, and pretty fast as well. I'll go use it as a test bed for BOINC now. :)

Microsoft is testing a Green Screen of Death for Windows 10, with even less information about the problem, just that they are collecting information and that you can reboot.

Gotta wonder what information is being collected, how and where that's sent to and for how long it's being kept there. Does that include personal information as who was on the computer, what site(s) were they on, screenshots of the site(s), login information, etc. etc.?

And the other question is when a malware developer will use the new screen to make it their own restart message so the nasty (ransom-)malware can do their job?

The Green screen has all the information as the Blue screen. It's simply a color change on Insider Preview builds, so that when testers post the screens online, MS can recognize them as coming from a preview (and not a release) build.

Creator's Edition of W10 Warning
I just wanted to remind you that MS installs their bare NVidia drivers...........You must download and install NVidia drivers from their site to continue to crunch on your NVidia card(s).
This is because it acts as a new install which means my bank will no longer recognize the computer, nor does my server. I had to reconfigure the server to recognize the HDs and will expect a call from my bank when I first access my account there.

Saw that also, early. Late.y, not so much. The drivers M$ is loading now seem to be OK. Issue before was the lack of OpenCL support.
Having said that, never a bad idea to get the drivers direct, but just keep in mind that the moment NV sends a new driver to M$, you'll get whether you want it or not. If you fall back, you'll get it again. and again ... and again ... YMMV

I just installed the Creator Edition and the OpenCL support was not there on two computers that were not running the Insiders version.

I think what you were seeing (assuming you were running the Insider version) was that the last updates were just updates and not what essentially is a clean install. I did not have to update the drivers in any of the recent updates to the Insider versions that I am running - and they still are running insider versions with a higher build number than the Creator Edition.

I had denied device installation prior to the update and when I did the CU update the setting stayed in place. Checking the programs & features and the BOINC event log showed no change in the GPU driver version, but I did re-install the driver just to be on the safe side.

Exactly why I won't accept any more monthly roll ups from M$.

Creators Edition (once the bugs are sorted) will allow you to stop such updates for all versions other than the Basic/Home version without the need for registry hacks or using the Group Policy Editor.
