Can you run QuickBooks??? I don't think so...

Yes...to a point.

Actually you can't. None of those versions will "function" today. The IRS has changed the format of the 1099/1096 forms and those versions will not print the correct form. Also you must use 2014 or later to access the payroll module or the credit card module. I also doubt you can export to Excel as some of the tax reports require. I won't even go into "credit reduction states" as those are new tax laws. So while those old versions won't crash, they can't do useful work.

I HATE COMMAND LINE!!!! MAC OS X does NOT require the average user to know ANY command line. EVERYTHING is done via GUI and Double Click! NOT Linux!!!

TL[/quote]

Sad to say, but a new Macbook Pro DOES have some "command lines." Consider the following:

If you go in to the /Applications folder and down to the Utilities folder, open that. There's a program called Terminal. Double click that and you get a window with a command line prompt. It is unix after all.

Type in

uname -a

followed by return. A line should come out. If there is an x86_64 in that line, probably out on the far right hand end, it's a 64 bit processor. If it says i686 it's 32 bit.

Alas, so much for perfection, huh? :(

The double-click install anything from anywhere (for good or for bad) is very much a Microsoft way of things. There are better ways. Why should the rest of the world be forever stifled to forevermore only do things the Microsoft way? Is that not a way of lock-in and stifled choice?...

Linux is thankfully not Microsoft. Just as the Macs and Android are different, so are the various Linux distro. All are as user friendly as far as those users are willing to see and use something new. They are all similar enough that any new ways are easily learnt. Try not to leave yourself trapped in old habits!

Your choice as to which you prefer.

Myself, I very much prefer the cool choice of Linux and the freedoms that I can enjoy with that choice.

(Part of that freedom is enjoying more of my time for myself rather than suffering silly malware!)

Sorry i have to disagree here Martin.
So long its not fully explained somewhere how to get new hardware included in a running system Linux is not ready for everybody.
I like it my self but had some issues to get my new GPU fully working after my other died.
And i call my self a techy guy.
Some may disagree on this.

Message 1772846 - Posted: 20 Mar 2016, 18:11:21 UTC

Reported today in The Verge:

Microsoft has screwed up its Windows Phone upgrades once again. While the software maker promised that all Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices would be upgraded to Windows 10, it's breaking that promise. Microsoft started rolling out Windows 10 Mobile to existing Lumia devices this week, and revealed that handsets like the Lumia 920 and Lumia 1020 will be stuck on Windows Phone 8. Here's the full list of officially supported Lumia devices:
•Lumia 1520
•Lumia 930
•Lumia 830
•Lumia 730
•Lumia 735
•Lumia 640
•Lumia 640XL
•Lumia 635 1GB
•Lumia 636 1GB
•Lumia 638 1GB
•Lumia 540
•Lumia 535
•Lumia 532
•Lumia 435
•Lumia 430

Given the age of some Lumia phones it's not surprising Microsoft isn't supporting them, but it's also ditching the Lumia Icon and Blu's Win JR LTE. Microsoft says the Lumia Icon might still get upgraded, but that there's no second wave of Windows 10 Mobile upgrades for other devices. That means Blu's Win JR LTE is definitely off the list. You might not have heard of the Win JR LTE, but it's a handset that Microsoft has been promoting as a compatible Windows 10 device. Microsoft silently updated its Store page to remove a reference to "upgradeable to Windows 10 when available" for the Win JR LTE this week, and it has angered owners who purchased the phone and were promised the software upgrade.

Windows Phone fans aren't necessarily angry at the lack of upgrade for their chosen devices, it's more the broken promises. Windows Phone 7 handsets were never upgraded to Windows Phone 8, and Microsoft set the expectation this time that history wouldn't repeat itself. Another broken promise is bad news for a mobile operating system that is practically dead, and once again Microsoft has angered its small but loyal base of Windows Phone users.

MAC also uses Double Click to install ALL apps and programs; so, NOT just a Microsoft thing. Without Double Click to install one is TRAPPED into having to learn 30 Command Lines to install MOST anything in Linux! (As per my experiences with Slackware, Ubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 14.04.) I SHOULDN'T have to know 30 Command Lines to do anything! As a User, (NOT Power User, NOT Tech Head), ALL I should have to do is Double Click to install... That is my choice; so, I'll stick with MAC and Win. (The way Win is going, it'll be just MAC at some point, soon.)

OH, and getting my GTX-750 TI SC working with Clover Boot Loader and Manager took a GUI approach in Clover Configurator. One switch ticked, (nvda_drv=1), after having installed the Alternate NVIDIA Drivers, and I was booting flawlessly into OS X El Capitan on my PC! LOOOOOVVVE Hackintosh! Makes MAC OS available to ANY Intel PC owner! :-)

LOOOOVE MAC OS X!!! Will be saving my coins for StarCraft II for MAC. (Can't run that in Linux - NATIVELY!!!)

Greetings Time,

I'm no Linux Guru or anything, but from my experience with it, it does not take "30 command line commands" to install anything. Not that I have seen. You go to the repository find what you want to install click it and click install. 30 years ago Linux may have need 30 commands on the command line to install something, but not today. And I highly doubt that back 30 years ago it would have taken 30.

Just my opinion... :)

Linux used to be quite a pain < 10 years ago. To install something you might have to go through several rounds of updating libs just to get an installer to run. Then find out you needed to update another 10 to get the application working.

Where as with MAC or Windows you would normally have a prompt "You need to have X installed. Do you want to install it now?".

However Linux has gotten a lot better about that kind of issue. With required packages getting pulled down from the internet automagically in modern mainstream distros.

Question on GWX Control Panel...

Of the 2 versions available, I did not install the "install" version, but chose the .exe one. Was I wrong?

If I wanted to try the "install" one, could I just download it and do so, or must I uninstall the .exe one first? How do I do that?

I had a frightening 1/2 hour yesterday and think it may have to do with GWX .exe. I can't be sure but GWX is the only thing I've installed on my Win 7 64 bit in months. I had done a "pin to start menu" on it and saw the "10" show up there. Days after either my Malwarebytes or McAfee antivirus did a reboot as one found something bad. The "10" vanished from the start menu. I tried to view a video and was told that "flash" wasn't working. I rebooted to try to fix it and, for the first time since I bought this OS, my reboot only went 1/2 way and would not complete. I tried everything, nothing worked. I cudn't do a restart to get to 'Task Manager.' I was forced to unplug my PC. When I again applied power the same thing happened, a "1/2 way" boot. I sat, with tears in my eyes, for several minutes and UN-plugged power again. On THIS boot, all went fine. I looked at the GWX Control Panel in the Start Menu, right-clicked it, and saw it was still set to "pin to start menu" BUT the "10" icon was NOT visible in my start menu. I clicked to "un-pin from start menu" as I worried something was fishy with GWX. I then selected "pin to taskbar" and saw the "10" icon show up there. I'm worried GWX was at the root of the problem re-booting after my anti-virus found something? I may be WAY "off-base?" How to know?

If I wanted to remove my version of GWX how would I do so? I don't want to as I don't want M$ to stuff Win 10 down my throat. I'm very worried. Sorry, but what happened was scary.

Thank you!

Here we go again.......booted up the daily driver just now, and received a notice that 'Windows Firewall has blocked access to some features of Boinc' very interesting since I use Norton and have the Window# Firewall turned off(at least it says it's turned off). I pressed the allow access and the notice went away...??????????????

Trouble with GWX Control Panel Part 2

Part 1 -See Message 1773464 - Posted: 23 Mar 2016, 14:10:44 UTC

===========================

GWX Control Panel, IMHO, almost destroyed my Win 7 Pro 64 bit PC. In "Part 1" of this catharsis, for lack of a better, but seldom used word, I detailed problems that I thought, but was not sure, about the possibility that GWX had almost wrecked my PC. Here, I explain the NEXT set of problems, and I'm now 99% sure GWX IS a problem. Maybe it's fine on a 32-bit Win 7 PC, or on any 8 and 8.1 PC, but NOT on MY PC. I would like to know WHAT OS, or platform, the developer of GWX used? I have to think it's not a Win 7 Pro 64 bit one.

As detailed in Part 1, my PC failed to re-boot properly after one of my anti-virus problems, (McAfee or MalwareBytes), cleared a piece of malware, or watever, during the night, and did an automatic re-boot. My PC runs 24/7 to better help SETI. What I had to do to "fix" the problem was described. One result was that I clicked 'Start," right-clicked GWX Control Panel, and UN-PINNED GWX from the Start Menu on my lower right. I thought this would stop it from re-starting on boot? Then, so I could easily see its settings. I pinned it to the Taskbar on the lower left.

Yesterday morning, I sleepily, with coffee cup in hand, turned on my monitor. All was fine after the earlier "boot problem." I proceeded to do my work.

An hour later I got on note on-screen saying there was an up-date for MalwareBytes and asking if I wanted to install it? I clicked "Yes" and waited. The install went fine. Then a message said: "To complete the install your PC must be rebooted. Would you like to do that now?" I clicked "Yes."

Then the bottom fell out of my world!

The re-boot stopped half-way, as it had the day before! I had no net connection and 1/2 my start-up programs failed to load. If I clicked on my e-mail client, Mozilla TB, it would not open, neither would my Firefox browser. :( My PC was TOAST.

I tried a normal re-boot, and got a screen full of stuff about "boot normally," or "boot in safe mode," etc. I clicked "boot normally." After several minutes I was back to where I was before, a 1/2-way boot. No good. The next time, on re-boot, I chose "boot in safe mode with net connection," or some such, I got a big white screen describing a myriad of possible problems. What to do? Crying was an option, and maybe a good one? One of the arcane, but unexplained, "DOS command-like cures" offered had to do with restoring my PC to an earlier point in time. Yay! Maybe I could bypass the problem, which I thought was GWX related this WAY?

I clicked THAT button. I was told I could go back a week in time. No good, as I had installed GWX on 3-13, many days earlier. I clicked "more options" and "restore to 3-12" popped up. Yay! I clicked it. I saw a "Restoring" screen, then a "Welcome" screen, then the screen went totally BLACK, with an ominous larger than normal cusor jiggling in the middle! OMG, now what? I waited, and waited, minutes passed as the "black screen from hell" glared back at me. :( Then, as if the M$ programmer, who had coded it, decided he had tortured me enough, relented, and I saw my good desktop in living color! All looked GREAT. But, what is THAT? The GWX icon I had unpinned from the Start Menu had reappeared! Why? I had un-pinned it. OMG, the arcane beast is back! What to do? I went to Search / Control Panel / Uninstall Programs, but GWX was NOT listed. :( Oh, wait, I had used the .exe version of GWX and not the "install" one. I then did s search for GWX but could not find it in either download folder, one being x86. Hmmmm. In the Start I saw its icon with other programs; I right-clicked and did a delete. I then realized my "system restore" to an earlier date had, it seemed, deleted GWX from my downloads but left its icon in Start. I deleted the GWX icons in the Start area and the taskbar.

Finally, with baited breath, and holding a hankie, prepared to cry, I did a re-boot. Guess what? The re-boot WORKED and all looked fine. :) Oh happy day, the bad monster is away! GWX is gone! My M$ up-dates are set to "download but let me choose" and that's it. I'll pray to the goddess to keep me safe from M$, the Redmond, WA PC wreckers. :)

I cannot SAY, with 100% certainty, that GWX caused my problems, but the chain of events strongly suggest it. If you have a PC exactly like mine, a Win 7 Pro, 64 bit, circa mid 2015 version of code, from HP, be CAREFUL.

What OTHER reasonable explanation is there for what I experienced with GWX? Maybe the .exe version is the culprit? Perhaps if I used the "install" version none of this would have happened? Thoughts anyone? How many of you used the .exe version as I did? I'm dismayed at not being able to protect myself from Win 10 by using GWX, but, in my experience, using it's like "throwing the baby out with the bath water." :(

GWX control panel is just fine on Win 7 64 bit, as on all flavors of Win, that could be raped to Win 10, except 10 itself! ;)

All you've had on your PC was some form of malware/virus or the like, maybe even a "bad" update from hell ahem - M$. This was "seemingly" removed by a system restore. It was just a coincidence and absolutely not related to GWX control panel. Pinning a program to something does never start it. Only if you yourself click on a pinned program, it will start. If you put a link to a program in the "autostart" folder, then - and only then - it will be started at user logon.

If you enable monitor mode inside GWX control panel, it will start itself on system restart, but this option has to be set by yourself and no one else.
Aloha, Uli

Greetings Linda,

I have Win7 Pro 64bit. I downloaded the .exe version of GWX Control Panel. I installed it using that file. I have a GWX icon on my desktop and M$ Control Panel lists GWX Control Panel in Uninstall a program. GWX runs at startup and I have an icon on my icon tray.

I have never and will never use McAfee. Recently I read something about it and it was recommended that it not be used. I cannot remember where I read it or why the recommendation, just that I did read about it. It was when I was trying to figure out a BSoD (Blue Screen of Death) problem I have been having (not related to GWX Control Panel).

I believe the first thing you should do is check Windows Control Panel to see if GWX can be uninstalled there. If not, I haven't a clue where to go next. But, if you can, try uninstalling GWX and reinstalling to see if it gets fixed, that is if that is the problem. As I said I'm running the same OS and am having no problems with it. Others here may know more about it. I believe GWX is very beneficial to those of us not wanting Window$ 10.

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

Our least favorite update is back once again for the 11th time.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/microsoft-updates-infamous-get-windows-10-patch-kb3035583-502117.shtml

And I also had the windows 10 install folder downloaded to my machine without my permission.

It was just a coincidence and absolutely not related to GWX control panel. Pinning a program to something does never start it.

I concur 100%, GWX has worked flawlessly on both of my rigs(Win 8.1)from early January. Another possibility is that Linda's machine had a corrupted file issue(which can be caused by numerous things some say including cosmic rays!). I have had similar issues in the past on Win7 systems, and once had to do a destructive restore to correct the issue.

I would suggest shutting down each night and a full 'cold boot' each morning. This allows the O$ to (in most cases) discard and replace, or at least warn the operator of a problem. The other advantage of daily boot up is you stand a lot better chance of not losing unsaved work if there is a problem.

Unpinning an app does not disengage the program, it only removes the icon from the desktop or task bar. The reason the icon re-appeared was that was the condition of the display on the date Linda chose for the restore rollback.

Occam's razor........if the app worked for many days without a problem then it probably didn't suddenly cause havoc. There most assuredly is another problem that caused the crash.

As I've posted before, I run 3 anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-conscription programs to prevent such occurrences, Norton, Malwarebytes, and Winpatrol concurrently(under the premise that very little will get by all monitors). I also periodically run Spybot Search and Destroy scans to make sure nothing got through(this program should only be run by a knowledgeable user as it can damage your registry if you remove something vital in error).

Hi Linda,

You have had all sorts of problems.
I would STRONGLY recommend to run SFC /scannow on an admin command prompt.

This will test the integrity of your OS.

If you do not do that, all your messing about, trying to fix new issues are likely to cause even more problems.

It is up to you.

Thank you, and ALL the kind gentlemen before you for help!

I did the SFC /scannow as you suggested and am pasting the final result below. The scan DID find some problems but I'm clueless as to what they are? All my stuff seems to be working OK. I opened the "CBS" file referred to in the scan output but it looks like a dictionary written in chinese! Why can't they just say 'this is good' and 'this is bad?' Why does the output data HAVE to be written in gobble-de-gook like some of the old DOS cmnds? :) I have the CBS file but see no way to 'attach' it here.

It was just a coincidence and absolutely not related to GWX control panel. Pinning a program to something does never start it.

I did not KNOW that. I thought anything on the right-side, in the Start Menu, was something that started on a boot.

I have been careful to wear a motorcycle helemt covered in tin foil to protect me from cosmic rays! I'm glad GWX has been problem-free on Win 8.1. Perhaps THAT is the OS the GWX programmer used? :)

I would suggest shutting down each night and a full 'cold boot' each morning. This allows the O$ to (in most cases) discard and replace, or at least warn the operator of a problem. The other advantage of daily boot up is you stand a lot better chance of not losing unsaved work if there is a problem.

I would lose SETI time doing that. As a compromise, maybe I'll re-boot weekly instead of letting my PC run 24/7 month after month? :)

Hmmmm. My rollback date was 3/12. I didn't install GWX till 3/13? So, is that still possible?

Ahhhhhhhhhhh, not quite correct. Yesterday was the first day my PC was automatically re-booted during the night by either MalwareBytes or McAfee. This was because one of them found something naughty. My problems with GWX only occurred after a re-boot. Either one by me or my anti-virus. However, I don't dismiss the possibility of another problem, just the timing.

As I've posted before, I run 3 anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-conscription programs to prevent such occurrences, Norton, Malwarebytes, and Winpatrol concurrently(under the premise that very little will get by all monitors).

I do the SAME as you. But, years back, I dumped Norton because, when I used it, it ran about 13 different files concurrently. I just wanted an anti-virus program, not it, and all its relatives. :) Malware Bytes is SUPER! I use McAfee as it is "quiet." It just runs and does its thing, and never clutters my screen daily as did Avast. They used to send out "emergency updates" weekly. One of their competitors imitated them once with a phony "emergency update." I fell for it as it looked so authentic. THAT phony update DESTROYED 2 of my Win xP computers. :)

Thank you for your kind help and thoughtful suggestions!
