Class actions take too long to organise. The EU court can act much quicker as it is a legal entity set up to act against large organisations. They look at both legal situation, and then act. Penalties can be in excess of 100% of a company's turnover, plus compensation for the victims of the cime (which in this case that would be Joe & Jane User).
Think of it, M$ fined >100% of one year's turnover (not profit, actual turnover - can't produce the figure for the year in question then the court looks back at the books and estimates what the turnover would be...). Plus compensation at >100% of the list price of the product PER USER. Even M$ would feel that...

If there is a gun it will fire. If data collected they can and ultimately will be stolen....

Hi Folks,
For any who may be interested:-)

Win10 network driver is crud.. At least on an AMD machine with a realtek network chip. Win10 works the network at about 86% full rate.

So anyone with an AMD rig and realtek network chip needs to install their[realtek] win10 driver to get full use of the chip.

Cant say what other network devices on other platforms may require..

Regards,
Cliff,

I don't think that MS will get the message until a large enough group of lawyers launches a class action lawsuit over this and hundreds of thousands start to sign onto it as plaintiffs............

You would have to include Apple and Google also, as they have been collecting information for years. Microsoft had to start using Big Data just to stay relevant. Of course we can uninstall updates, and do other things to protect our privacy now, but 5, 10, or 20 years from now, I doubt it. Microsoft, and other companies can just wait us out, and utilize the data they are getting from others.

I started carrying a smart phone, knowing full well what data was collected. On the other hand, the service that I receive is extraordinary. I figure I can either buck the data collection, or enjoy the capabilities the emerging world offers. Data can be stolen from anywhere, whether it be banks, insurance companies, governments, store chains, or personal computers. I have protected myself as much as practical against identity theft, ransomware, or data breaches, which seems like a good insurance policy in a hostile world. I am trying to adjust to a future where I will have no choice as to what data is collected.

The future is a bit scary, and I don't know where it will end up. I do see the trend of increasing data collection with, or without my consent, and am doing my best to prepare for it. Will it be enough? Only time will tell.

I just noticed something. I have been playing around with Windows 10, with most of the intrusive stuff turned off. I don't know if this has been mentioned in this thread, but here it is anyway. I previously had Windows 7 Ultimate, which led me to believe I would receive Windows 10 Professional. What I actually got is not the professional version, which explains why I haven't seen the extra control I was looking for based on this thread. I will be building a new computer next year, so I will be doing a clean install with a newly purchased copy of Win 10 Pro anyway. I just don't have the time to constantly uninstall/block updates that increase telemetry or data collection. I didn't realize I had the home edition until I looked on the computer stats page, and saw that others had the pro version, and I had the non-pro version. Rats.

I saw this this morning and thought those of you that are having problems with Malware10 might be interested. http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/anti-beacon-for-windows-10-download.html It also works on Win 7 & 8.1. I'm thinking about downloading it and see what comes up on my Win 7.
I have installed and run the Spybot Antibeacon program(Cut The Line), with the following results. This is on 3 Win 8.1 machines.

25 telemetry hosts blocked

Telemetry Group Policy Blocked
Registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection\AllowTelemetry

Consumer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) Group Policy Blocked
Registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\CEIPEnable

Consumer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP)Scheduled Tasks Blocked
Task: Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser
Task: Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\ProgramDataUpdater
Task: Microsoft\Windows\Autochk\Proxy
Task: Microsoft\Windows\DiskDiagnostic\Microsoft-Windows-DiskDiagnosticDataCollector
Task: Microsoft\Windows\Customer Experience Improvement Program\Consolidator

So far no problems.

I started carrying a smart phone, knowing full well what data was collected.

I still wonder about this though. I have got an Android 4.2.1 smart phone, only allow it to make contact through WIFI. After I factory reset the phone last month, I've installed a Data Usage Monitor app. This shows me that last month I used 2.88GB down and only 90.8KB up. For this month I am at 3.19GB down and only 66KB up.

I'd think those low up values are only internet control bytes, not personal data being sluiced away.

On my Windows 10 PC I see lots of data going up to CERN programs such as vLHC@home, Atlas@home and, especially, CMS-dev which is a Beta project.

Making good on my promise of priority, 1st login and use of Firefox through Ubuntu, so far the hardest part was burning the ISO file correctly.

Yeah, I'm still tuning that of course. We had a computing meeting today which was a bit more positive than earlier in the year. Things are probably going to change in the submission method, but I don't think the volunteers will see a difference -- I'm hoping it will make my part easier, though. I'm also starting to get some reaction to my plea for consistent jobs with minimal data return, just don't expect it Real Soon Now. I'm trying to retrieve recent data so that I can compare it with normal GRID jobs and report at a meeting at CERN next month. With a bit of luck I can get a publicly-available report out of it, which should please the volunteers.
(I realise this is more directed at CMS@Home, just reacting to tullio's comment.)
(As a consequence of my broadband woes, I can't run CatH at home myself -- not enough capacity. :-( )

Now, I am a bit more confused. I got home from work, and went to the Control Panel, and verified that I have Win 10 Pro. I don't know why it says different on the Seti pages.

Awh crap, I read my app wrong. But good as well, because it's of course slightly impossible to have only got 91KB upload on 2.88GB download. But no, here I read everything wrong, as the upload for this was 241.2MB, the download was 2.45GB.

This month, the numbers are 3.36GB down and 452.7MB up.

Streaming video does eat up quite a bit of bandwidth. Sending large attachments on email also sucks up quite a bit of data.

The creepy one's usage was BOINC, which I do not use on my phone, but it managed to use 4.5MB all by itself. No projects attached but using bandwidth anyway. Uninstalled. :)

I have a 20 Mbit/s ADSL, working at 15 Mbit/s. So I can run all CERN projects, plus SETI@home, plus Einstein@home, plus CPDN. All this on 2 Linux boxes and a Windows 10 PC.

Since all of the CRAP with Win10 NSA edition I am running a triple boot system 1 drive for win7 pro(my daily driver updates off) 1 drive with ubuntu 14.04 and 1 drive with mint 17.2 rafaela cinnamon desktop. I am liking both but am leaning toward mint the only problem right now is when working with either one it cuts into my crunching time since I do not want to switch over completely just yet I would like to take some time to LEARN before that but I do see one or the other being my OS of the future. I am working with the 64 bit version of both and it is making me think real hard about upgrading my 7 to 64 bit(currently 32 bit hardware not up to it at the time but is now)

*1 driving ubuntu myself on a Win 8 laptop that I wiped. So far so good, going to try running some Win programs using wine. I see a steep learning curve for a while in my financial software, gnucash could be good when I learn it.
