Message 1726334 - Posted: 16 Sep 2015, 23:48:17 UTC - in response to Message 1726307.

I have an old HP XW8200 workstation that I'm going to install Ubuntu on and I'll put Gnucash on that to play with.

Another question, anyone have any experience with video capture and playback in Ubuntu. I currently use a Hauppage card as a DVR for recording, Does Ubuntu support that card?

I would suggest staying with kernel 3.13.x, you will have a better choice of GPU drivers to chose from. You might try the drivers in System Settings/Software & Updates/Additional Drivers first. You might be satisfied with those and not need to install a Driver from nVidia. Whatever you do, stay away from AMD driver 15.7, it has been nothing but trouble on my machines. Also, Ubuntu 14.04.x has a Bug with Dual GPU cards, so, if you use Multiple cards you may have to apply the 'Fix' mentioned here, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-drivers-common/+bug/1310489

Image 14.04.1 will install Kernel 3.13.x, Image 14.04.2 will install Kernel 3.16.x;
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/14.04.1/
Look in the Software Center after installing, I think there is a Video capture App there.
Have Fun.

Far easiest is to use the distro software centre to install/update your graphics drivers. Often, the graphics install is actually a careful interface to the manufacturer install, with whatever tweaks needed already done for you.

But hey! This is Linux... So... If you want you also have the choice to go and do a manual install to make your own tweaks... :-)

For your Hauppauge card (which one?), try these links as a first look:

And there's various other examples.

Good luck and have fun!

Linux virus infections are theoretically possible.

Dang, it sounds as though the only reason you need an AV in Linux is to protect some Windows PC.
I suppose if you swap data with a Windows PC you might need an AV in Ubuntu...or not.

Back in ~91, the first internet transmirred ''viruses' we had detected at school, ' I was examining core dumps to analyse ( Wide format tractor feed paper running down a uni hallway, highlighter in hand) to see what was happening. These were more correctly Worms. I recall the traditional stealth/polymorphic vuses transmitted via disk and newsgroups were mostly Dos based et the time, but those were a different thing, though there were Amiga ones circulating too of course.

For the worms, they were mostly applicable to nix based infrastructure (most of the routing etc was done by sparc stations etc), and propagated via exploits in protocols/ports, and sloppy admin practices.

AFAIK, similar weaknesses still exist in infrastructure and admin practices, as do worms and the manual exploits they use to propagate. Intrusion detection systems and security practices bolt a lot of that down, but AFAIK the mechanisms just changed/moved into infrastructure hardware, and aren't called worms anynore, but NSA backdoors :)

I have been using Linux since 1996 and never had an AV. Earlier I had been using UNIX systems in my professional life. I am connected to Internet since 1991 on the GARR Italian scientific network. I have used Gopher command line server and client before Netscape and Mozilla existed. Now I am using also Windows 10. I found Windows 8, then 8.1, on a HP minitower I bought last year. I am using it mostly as a Virtual Box platform for CERN projects. My mail is on a SuSE Linux host. When the next SuSE release occurs, I shall install it as a Virtual Machine on the Windows host, which has plenty of RAM (20 GB) and disk (2 TB).

Yes, a very long time ago there was something called the 'Autostart Worm' infecting CDs. I was subscribed to a particular Mac Mag that shipped CDs with the Mag. Somehow the 'Worm' made it onto one of their CDs. Fortunately it was discovered and reported before my CD arrived. When the CD arrived I checked it and found it did indeed contain the 'Worm'. That was probably the closest I've come to having My Mac infected...that I know about.

In other news I've managed to log back into my damaged Test Ubuntu 15.04 SSD. This is a New problem with AMD driver 15.7, well, New to Me anyway;

Low, the patches are already included wily.

So, you have to wait for Ubuntu 15.10 for the fix????

Stay away from AMD Catalyst 15.7. I was locked out of Logging In until I removed the AMD card and installed a nVidia card. Then my Password worked...too weird.

Hmmmm, after further reading,
Don't forget that the fix here does nothing for people that installed FGLRX directly from the AMD website...

"brokenness" depends on the video card...

So, it's just Ubuntu 15.04 and AMD drivers? Stay away from Both????

Off-topic, but in response to TBar.

Yes, I ran into that one as well. That's why I've stayed with kernel 3.19.0-25 for now. I didn't need to pull out any cards though - just go to recovery mode and revert the kernel then reinstall fglrx.

Still a pain, though.

OK, but if you're angry with Win 10, like a number of people in this thread, try the latest version of Ubuntu, and hit this Bug, you might decide to stick with Win 10. So, best to tell people to Avoid Ubuntu 15.04 with AMD drivers. If you are new, you end up with a totally Borked system and can't even log in to make it to the Bug page to discover the 'Fix'.
Not Good.

Some things are mentioned in the above link I've not seen in all the Win 10 posts so far. It may be helpful to some and is why I'm posting it?

Thanks for this and previous your posts, they are informative ones indeed.

Well, maybe classic virus not so possible in Linux, but trojan horses are quite possible. We even had such on our Web server PC. With decent capabilities of hiding and re-install that resemble Windows-based viruses. Though finally it was eradicated manually some googling on the way was required... Was it some security mis-configuration or other reason - unknown, but the fact was. It blocked WEB server from correct operation and, maybe, acted like bot-net.

It seems this issue gets world-wide attention now.
We got new law recently (it recently started to act AFAIK) regarding private data storage outside of country. Such data should now be kept on servers on country's territory. Though as could be concluded from comments regarding this law it's mostly about investments into national data centers (that is, about money), such territorial placement will ease FEDs access to such data too.

Thanks so much for this, I found one that I had missed on the previous list and one that had reinstalled itself(3075249). Very irritating and time consuming! Damn M$ to the lowest hell possible.

[edit] and after restart, 3077715 and 3080149 were on the list of updates waiting for download(after being hidden twice previously. They (M$) are devious little jerks!

The sooner the EU pins M$ to the wall and removes billions from their bank the better.

On a PC which has automatic updates turned OFF I started to receive the downgrade to Widows 10. This is nothing short of a criminal action on behalf of a gang of crooks.

I am now having to go through the pain of removing the ILLEGAL JUNK that has been deposited on that PC.

An invoice for my wasted time, at 10k gbp per hour or part there-of (into second hour...), is being sent to M$ HQ in Seattle. I doubt that they will pay it, but the more folks that do this the better - they may get the message that they are upsetting a large number of users and roll back on their ILLEGAL activities.

I don't think that MS will get the message until a large enough group of lawyers launches a class action lawsuit over this and hundreds of thousands start to sign onto it as plaintiffs............

I have used Spybot S&D for many years with good results. I just installed this program from them(It's called Cut The Line), I'll see how well it blocks this virus. It indicated that everything was now blocked after I pushed the immunize button.

Interestingly the 'Get Window$ 10' update appeared again on one machine that I had removed Window$~BS from. Switching to Ubuntu is becoming more and more of a priority for me.
