Last night I watched this video showing the Google logo evolving over the years. In it there's a section about what you can do with "Ok Google".

Did you know you can talk to your phone to tell it to send a text to person X your contact list and tell what's in the text? Did you know you can write emails like that? Did you know you can set an alarm easily that way? Turn off your WIFI, search on the internet, search on your phone, use any app on your phone just by saying its name.

I'm shocked. Have had this smart phone for almost 2 years and didn't know it was that smart. With a sexy voice as well.

While in the video it works quite well in foreign languages, I found it's quite easily confused in Dutch. So am using mostly English for it. Addicting. Yes, really. :)

I do believe you found the correct link to follow. On that page it states that if the original disk does not contain any service packs, they need to be uninstalled first for the repair install to work. I have looked on the package, the jewel case and the disk and found no indication that it contains SP1.

The instructions I was following the other day made no mention of service packs on the page or at least I never read it and I had read pretty much the whole page where it applied to my situation. I had read all the warnings, options, whatever and saw no mention.

Tomorrow, when I have more time, I will attempt the repair install again, after I uninstall SP1. Thanks again! :)

For me the novelty wore off after a day or two on my phone. Now I have shut that stuff off to save battery power given that it is actually faster for me to do all of the functions without speaking & having to try 5-10 times to correct what it thinks I said.

I really admire your patients. After so, so ,so much fiddling with it, if you EVER get it to work somewhat, you will end up with a totally unstable system.

In New Hampshire, there is a hands free law, which means you can't use a cell phone while driving. I have mine mounted on the dash, so my wife can get it if it rings. I also have it set to answer me even if it is locked. There are occasions where my wife and I are discussing something, and a question comes up. While I am driving, with both hands on the wheel, I ask Google, and get an answer my wife can read while I drive. This has proven to work awesomely. I never have to lift a finger, and the phone does what I want. I often use the set alarm feature when I am cooking dinner. I just tell the phone to go off at a specific duration or exact time. What a handy device!

Edit: Depending on the question I ask it, it sometimes just speaks the answer, and my wife doesn't even have to read it.

I absolutely love Cortana on my new Windows Phone! I use her all the time to do much of what you said, and I'm constantly looking for more ways to use the application.

Oh, and check out the two Easter Eggs by asking Cortana, "Where is Master Chief?" and "Where can I bury a dead body?"

I imagine if there were anything to worry about with the Big Brother concerns, the second question would have already triggered DHS or the like.

I took a look at my TV server last night, and found 5 of the 14 bad ones had managed to sneak themselves on that system. Uninstalled those, then tried a power down. After an hour of the system telling me it was "..preparing Windows, do not shut down..", I went to bed.

When I passed an hour later to the toilet, it was still chugging away, and listening to it I heard the HDD do a little rattle every now and then (thank the deities for HDDs that make noise). Going back to bed I didn't immediately fall asleep and after 15 minutes I noticed that the amount of light in the living room had returned to a much darker shade: it had finally powered down. (This system has 4 big blue LED lights on the front of the case.)

Tonight powering it up again, it took a further 15 minutes to get rid of remnants, but that's hopefully it.

Checking both on that system and on my normal driver, doing a check for Windows updates, it doesn't add any of the just uninstalled 'updates' as 'new' or 'missing' ones. So I can't even hide them. Will keep an eye on that.

I have to agree. I just had to disable the Diagnostic Tracking Service for the 2nd time(keeps turning itself back on?). And our old friends KB3068708 and 3075249 just appeared on my optional update list after being hidden twice previously.

Oh, I don't think it shall be too long and there will be some enterprising souls that will try to write security restoring utilities for 10.
Of course, once Skynet discovers them, they will send out another KB virus to disable them.

I experienced something interesting, I have an Acer Aspire Laptop that came with Window$ 8 installed new. I decided to try Ubuntu from a DVD and there is no way the system will boot. It refuses to recognize any OS other than Window$ 8 even when in BIOS. And I surmise the SSD C: boots too quickly to see the DVD.

This. My friend that I have mentioned a few times throughout this thread has to go into the UEFI menu for his 8.1 laptop and set the boot mode to 'legacy' in order to boot from optical/USB.

HaHa! I see Micro$ofts attempt at making every PC run 'ONLY WINBLOWS' is still in the UEFI. lol I fear that one day, they may just succeed. Good thing I build my own PCs, but if I do decide to scrub Winblows and go with Linux, I will have to check my UEFI first... ;)

P.S. @ BilBg: The repair install did not go through. I was able to get past the first error 'Your current Winblows is a newer version...', but I ran into another stating that 'Winblows 7 Professional cannot be upgraded to Winblows 7 Professional'. I tried 3 different ways to do it per that page you linked to. Nothing, nata, zilch... So, I'm left with only 2 options: Do a clean install of Win7 Pro 64bit or scrub Winblows completely and go with Linux. I have reinstalled SP1 to fix a few things that were broken with out it. I have not tried to install the 100+ updates that Micro$oft says I need. I'm in contemplative mode right now. Thanks dude for the website you linked to. :)

Over the years I've had little luck with doing repair "installations" of various versions of Windows. These days I just head straight for the re-installation, sometimes it they ask for the key, sometimes they don't, but they always save an imense amount of swet and agro. Also, and I've not worked out the logic here, I've had to re-register and sometimes not.
The other option of going for a version of Linux is certainly getting to be more attractive when I read the issues folks are having with the migration to Windoze 10.

Most Linux distros don`t work smooth with newest hardware.
