Just burned ISO of Ubuntu 14.04.3 and I'm gonna set up a dual OS boot on the old workstation along side the Win 7 I have running there.

Gotta be tomorrow, beddy bye now.

I know tons of people that would totally ditch Windows entirely if all of the games from the past... 15 years would work in Linux. But... there's a market-share monopoly on everything only working with DirectX.. and .NET, which makes basically every game that is worth playing Windows-only.

Occasionally, there are some that use OpenGL instead, and actually a lot of indie games work on Windows, Linux, and OSX because of the choice to go with OpenGL (likely because they didn't have the budget for the licensing to use DirectX).

I was really looking forward to AMD's Mantle engine....and then MS saw how good Mantle was and said "let's make an identical copy of it, but call it DX12 instead!" *throws arms up* Well.. there goes that glimmer of hope that Mantle-supported games would start being quite popular (and be cross-platform compatible).

I seriously would have ditched Windows a decade ago if it weren't for the completely cornered/captive market of DirectX. Yes, there is always WinE (Windows Emulator), but it only works so much, and because it has to emulate an environment, there's a lot of overhead and it is very glitchy and selective/moody about what will and won't work.

That's how M$ put most of us on their needle. Windows not OS only to be replaced. It's ecosystem. And actually it embraces not only software like games. There is hardware that will work nowhere but Windows...

I only have a local account. But which version of Windows 10 do you have? I have the Home. Others with Pro can use RDP.

The whole linux thing is not any harder then when you learned how to use dos and windows

I agree, but I have the advantage of some Unix knowledge where the average Joe doesn't. My drawback is finding productivity programs. Does Open Office work in Linux?

I think I'll install a Linux OS version on an old HP XW6200 I have and play with it. What flavor do you suggest?

In the early 90s I had to make a decision at work on which nix flavor to use for a DNS server followed by a web server etc. After much research it came down to Free BSD and Slackware for stability and security. I finally opted for Slackware because Linux seemed to have a bigger community to lean on. After 20+ years I do not regret that decision so my recommendation would be Slackware. YMMV.

Thanks Bernie. I just Downloaded it. I will make sure to move it to my Flash Drive for safe keeping.

I'm still planning to upgrade my family's systems in December to Win 10. Three of the systems will be Win 10 Home, my system will be Win 10 Pro.

Wine is the app that makes it possible
I even play Elite dangerous in it

some games just need a lil bit of reading and googeling

i don't play much games

i understand the security benefits of using a command line for almost everything, but for me that gets a bit old after a while

Yep, I'm not a fan of the cmdline either. My favorite cmdline was GKSU nautilus, until I decided to use the Berkeley version of BOINC in my Home folder. Now I don't need to track down BOINC files or worry about permissions. I just open the BOINC folder and work as though it were Windows, except My BOINC data folder isn't in a Hidden folder. The only down side is you have to launch boincmgr manually, but, I do that on All my machines anyway. I don't care to have BOINC launch at startup and I only have a few machines anyway.

It works nicely and I've never had a problem with it. You just need to know what ldd and the Synaptic Package Manager is for...

Dependencies can be installed from synaptic or whatever package manager you prefer no need for a shell

I just picked up 2 Win 7 64 Pro off Amazon Prime, as an insurance policy. I am intending to retro grade my 2 daily drivers back from 8.1.

H.P. is still offering Win 7 Pro 64 bit with nvidea graphics in the $550 to #650 range with bells/whistles added.

I don't know what you installed, but, if you would have installed it from the Ubuntu Software Center then Yes it could have been that simple.

BTW, VLC is in the Software Center and it installs with One Click of the mouse.

I'm not sure if I would want my computer to have any bells or whistles.
Despite Windows 7 being "end of life" many computer manufactures are still offering it.

Might be useful, as then you'll get an audible warning that Windows is going to install mandatory updates. :)
