[Windows 10] Delivery Optimization also sends updates and apps from your PC to other PCs on your local network or PCs on the Internet.

Delivery Optimization is turned on by default in Windows 10.

Very cheeky and very nasty. That is a form of file/sharing torrent.

Some internet service providers will blacklist you and cut you off from the internet for that.

Worse still... That is the sort of thing that the RIAA, MPIAA and Hollywood have sued people for...

Incredible.

IT is what you allow it to be...

Is there anything good about Windows 10, though? Just anything?

Yes, that it gets a lot of people thinking, how bad the privacy issue has become and maybe, do something about it.

If you work for the alphabet agencies you have to be loving Win 10. It will no doubt be a better success than FaceBook;

I do feel that the newer operating systems have better built-in support for newer technologies like USB 3.0

The newer operating systems also seem to boot faster from SSD than the older operating systems do

DX12 looks promising if your a gamer and have compatible hardware
Alleged speed improvements over Win 7 (I went from Win 8 where the speed increase isn't as noticeable)
Common codebase between all MS products should lead to better\faster bug fixes and a more consistent user experience
Once you get passed the crap start menu the Universal Apps are getting better - just need to improve the quantity in the store
Edge is a pretty decent browser and will improve once they open it up to add-ons

Downsides (apart from what has already been mentioned)
Placeholders gone in Onedrive is a PITA
Still not a consistent design approach throughout the menus
Should still be in Beta and not in general release as certain area's, although they work, feel rushed
And not releasing details of whats in the updates is just a stupid idea

http://money.cnn.com/2015/08/17/technology/windows-10-privacy/index.html

Haven't read the whole thing yet but, it has me hooked. I have disabled a lot of Win 10s "sharing features", I feel there are a lot more to be dealt with.

I'm not a paranoid person. I do however see MS answering a lot of questions in the near future. Especially the idea that people can download updates AND apps through your PC. I'm not sure of the whole story but, I am learning very quickly.

A warning: I found by trial and error that Remote Desktop Protocol does not work in the Home Edition of Windows 10, the one which was given me as a free update of Windows 8.1, where it worked. This forbids me the VM consoles where I was seeing the CERN jobs (not to be confused with BOINC tasks, which run OK) on projects like vLHC@home, ATLAS@home, CMS-dev. I can see the consoles in the CERN Summer Challenge, which uses a browser window to show the running jobs. You need to have the Windows 10 pro edition to use RDP.

Still another Windows 10 cumulative update, the third from July 29. I asked to get a notification before the update is installed, only the first was installed automatically, powering off all projects. Now I suspend all running projects before accepting the installation of the update, which is only downloaded automaticall (but not on a metered connection). If you declare your connection as metered you won't get the update. I am doing this as a curiosity, since I am a SuSE Linux user, waiting for a new release.
As a result of this last update, the clock of my A10-6700 AMD CPU has risen from 3.70 GHz to 3.96 GHz, topping at 4 GHz.Why?

Tullio, I had the same problem.

Make sure you use Remote Desktop from a LOCAL ACCOUNT on the machine NOT your Microsoft account. You can turn your Microsoft account into a local machine account in USER ACCOUNTS : Make changes to your account in PC Settings.

Make it a local account on the machine and RD should work again - at least it did for me.

I just picked up 2 Win 7 64 Pro off Amazon Prime, as an insurance policy. I am intending to retro grade my 2 daily drivers back from 8.1.

Raistmer - I'm not asking anyone else to like what Microsoft has implemented, and there are parts I don't like and think should be changed - what part of that are people not getting or are you just reading the parts of my posts you want to?

Whether the EULA is acceptable or not until it gets changed, either by Microsoft, law or everyone just walking away from Microsoft, that's what we're stuck with like it or not

We are not stuck with M$ all we have to do is switch to linux and your problems are over
The more ppl switch to linux the more popular it will become and suddenly game companies and app companies will make software for it

Plus on the upside if something is fishy or the devs don't like the eula they voice it very quickly tear the softwarew apart and expose

The whole linux thing is not any harder then when you learned how to use dos and windows
I came down with a bad case of i don't give a crap

I agree, but I have the advantage of some Unix knowledge where the average Joe doesn't. My drawback is finding productivity programs. Does Open Office work in Linux?

I think I'll install a Linux OS version on an old HP XW6200 I have and play with it. What flavor do you suggest?

If you want a SETI friendly version you might stick with Ubuntu or their Windows looking release;
Linux x64 - Tested on the current Ubuntu distribution; may work on others...
Both versions come with a version of Open Office installed although I've never used it.
Just remember for a long time now BOINC doesn't look in the correct location for the OpenCL library if you install the proprietary driver. You have to Manually link to the libopencl.so if you install the drivers from the vendors.

as a matter of fact ubuntu/linux mint has openoffice/libreoffice preinstalled

with most linux systems you really do not need any unix knowledge you can do most within the gui

Yep, that's the most important disadvantage of Home edition. AFAIK before they disabled only income connection via RDP (that is, server part) in Home editions. Leaving this edition even w/o client part is quite stupid. RDP often needed to connect from home to work PC. So now "Home" edition should reside not in home (where now Pro required) but... in children's sandbox maybe?.... Hacks will follow ;)

VNC teamviewer Ultra-vnc etc will do the job just fine
Also Aeroadmin is pretty cool if you looking for a free solution that looks like teamviewer

Provided you could install anything you want on your work PC... But if one could replace OS itself no sense to speak about particular OS dis/advantages ;)
