Well that was less than stella!!

Having already installed the 353.30 drivers from the nvidia web site, all was fine

Foolishly I then checked for updates and Windows decided to install the 353.62 drivers, not really sure what happened but I just got a black screen, luckily Team Viewer worked fine and I was able to reboot, remove all traces of all Nvidia drivers, then run the update blocker from MS and reinstall the Nvidia drivers.

So there is still a problem, however the update blocker seems to be a way round. I suspect because of this we will eventually see a way to block specific updates rather than an "add on".

Otherwise I am quite impressed, it seems to have lots more settings and tweaks, however I don't really use that machine much and I currently cant sit near it.

Hopefully my laptop will get the update soon as that is the one I really want to test it on.

Well until I can get the new replacement PC up and running and the energy to do so, I'll stay with Win7 Pro x64, since I can't run any video driver newer than 266.58 whql, the motherboard just won't deliver the required power to the video card and cpu adequately enough. And the Corsair 850w psu I have, has the power to do so, the motherboard just sucks.

I just downloaded and burned the .iso for my Win 10 Pro. Now I have an installation disk, should things go horribly wrong when I choose to do the free upgrade in December. :-)

You may need to be more descriptive of the problem. Others have said they installed Windows 10 and SETI picked up right where it left off, which suggests that your problem may be unique to your machine.

So, tell us about the symptoms, provide details from the logs, and then we can provide suggestions on how you can fix.

(Since this is a Windows 10 - Yea or Nay? thread, you may want to start a new one for Windows 10 SETI problems.)

So, did you try simply changing the Device Installation Settings that I referenced in my earlier post this morning?

Well it was a bit late by then as they are installation settings, as far as I can see they stop Windows trying to install a generic driver on a new equipment installation, like the first time you power up after installing something new, nothing to do with updates.

Could be wrong, but that is how I read it.

Interesting, I took it as just the opposite, both from the other web site comments that led me to those examples, and from the "Never install driver software from Windows Update" option. In any event, since I'm planning to use my xw9400 as a Win 10 guinea pig, perhaps I'll find out how it really works in a day or so.

I am thinking about installing it on my Flaky drive, just to see what it does.

I downloaded it with the tool this morning to a flash drive.

What would be really awesome customer service, is if it detected your flaky drive and displayed a please wait message, while they emergency helicoptered a replacement SSD with a hooters meal bonus. Customer service few!

Has a solid feel to me, despite obvious incomplete bits. Using OS X at the moment, and I;d have to say I prefer win10, then Winx64, then OS X then win7 (OS X only a fraction higher, because shiny,,, Linux is there by default)

Yes I agree. I gave up waiting for "my turn" and downloaded the Content Creation Tool, does seem to take a bit longer but I now have Win 10 on my laptop and I really like the cleaner look and feel to it.

I was surprised that there were no problems with my aging ATI 3670, but it seem to cope fine.

Also seem to be a lot more "tweaks and settings" to play with.

Currently my main machine is at 55% however I know I will have problems as it has dual screens and one is on the HDMI, so I will be interested to see what happens.

So would I advise people to change, depends, I will be advising my 60+ students with Win 7 to stick with 7 as it does make changes to the familiar layout. Also my most prolific student loves to make DVD's of his family, and has just got used to Windows DVD maker which of course was removed in Win 8.

If they have win 8 then yes I would say upgrade as it has the best bits of Win 7 and 8.1 and if they are used to 8 it wont be a big jump.

As for everyone out there, if you are happy with Win 7 then stay with it, after all you have a year to make up your mind.

While the site was down this morning, I forced the upgrade using the online tool from M$S and found a few interesting things.

If you have a home page other than M$S, edge will not go to that page. I had to include the home page button from the settings.

Win 10 will not run Java plug-ins, they have been blocked by M$S.

Cannot use what used to be the Windows Update, it has been de-activated by the OS and I haven’t figured how to get to it yet. We should have access to it if using pro or ultimate.

Even though I’m the admin and supposed to have admin right, I had to give all users full authority to replace the file in beta.zip to the SIV folder.

If you use Adobe flash, you can’t update from the Adobe site, Win 10 will state that it is included and it will update as necessary.

Initial start of some programs will take a couple of minutes to load, I don’t know if the system is scanning them or not.

Make sure that any programs (i.e. BOINC) that you want to auto start when OZS starts up are set in msconfig prior to upgrade. I made the mistake of blanking the BOINC boxes and I see no way to turn them back on. I may have to reinstall BOINC.

Msconfig will take you to the task manager. At this time I see no way to manually set programs to auto start from there.

Most setting stay the same, but had to manually set the power settings.

I don’t use Windows Firewall, and I keep getting these annoying notifications telling me to turn it on.

Can’t uninstall One Drive, but I was able to it off so that it wouldn’t start at startup.

Cannot uninstall One Note, don’t use.

Upgraded my daily driver last night (from 7 Pro), let it activate, then formatted and did a clean install. It went right out and activated. No issues at all. Seems to be very snappy, with lots of options for tweaking. I don't like that you have to opt-out of all the synching/sharing/automatic stuff, but it takes only seconds to do so. So far, so good. :-)

I think it's safe to say that I shall stick with 7 on my daily driver until it is impossible to do so.
And XP still powers my other 8 crunch only rigs.

As far as I know, this is regulated through the registry, not through Msconfig/startup.

Before trying anything else, open BOINC Manager, and then depending on BOINC version:
7.4 and before, Tools->Options
7.6 and later, Options->Other options...

Now uncheck "Run Manager at login?" and OK if checked and then do that again to check this option.
Or just check "Run Manager at login?" if unchecked, then OK.

This will start BOINC at Windows login.
